Unit Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Shame, quality bloke and fair play for leaving, Charlton really is his club. If anything I'm suprised he didn't go there earlier, they've become a mediocre league one team from a mediocre premier league team in a matter of seasons, scary really! Just wondering if this means we'll end up with Tord Gripp now?

Babylon Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Nice bloke, counts for nothing in management though as you aren't there to be the players friend like he is here. Hope he does well, his celebrations in his one game in charge will live long in the memory.

Bugg Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Just seen it confirmed on the SSN breaking news banner.
Onions Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Leicester City first-team coach, Chris Powell, has today been named as the new manager of Charlton Athletic, on a three-and-a-half year deal. Leicester City manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson, said: "We are disappointed to lose Chris, but we respect his decision and his desire to become the manager of the club he has such a strong association with. "Charlton have gained a great man. Chris is a first-class person and coach. I am certain that he will go on to be a successful manager. He leaves Leicester City with the best wishes of everyone at the club and the legacy of his great work here will continue beyond his departure." The former England international and Addicks legend joined the Foxes as a player in 2008 and a year later he became a player/coach as the club returned to the Championship. The former left-back finished his exemplary football career at the end of the 2009-2010 season and was a popular figure during his two years of playing at the Walkers Stadium. That popularity followed Powell throughout his playing career, but the Valley and Charlton Athletic has always been regarded as his home. Leicester City Chief Executive, Lee Hoos, said: "There is no secret of Chris' aim to become a manager and whilst we are all disappointed to see him leave, everyone at this club will wish him all the best for his new challenge. "Chris has the respect of everyone he comes in to contact with, whether they are fellow staff, players or supporters. That quality will be invaluable for his management career." During Powell's playing career, he made 270 appearances for Charlton Athletic, across three spells at the club. He also played for Crystal Palace, Aldershot, Southend United, Derby County, West Ham United and Watford, before finishing up at the Walkers Stadium. In his two years at the Walkers Stadium, Powell reached the landmark of 750 appearances in his senior football career, before taking up a coaching role. He was also called upon to take over the reins as joint caretaker manager, alongside Mike Stowell, after Paulo Sousa left the club, with the duo overseeing a 3-1 victory over S****horpe United. Powell's appointment at the Valley succeeds Phil Parkinson's time at Charlton, after he departed the npower League One club earlier this month.
lee(lcfc) Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 sad to see him leave but he moving on to greater things and hope he does well
lcfcsam Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Bit gutted about this really. Will do well down there I'm sure.
I am Rod Hull Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Cant blame him tbh.. His old club. Good luck to him, and im sure we`ll all be looking out for Chaltons results.
Onions Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 New Charlton Athletic manager, Chris Powell, spoke of a 'special relationship' with Leicester City and the supporters, as he put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal at the Valley. The Addicks legend became a popular figure at the Walkers Stadium during his time as a player and coach, with the Foxes faithful sure to be sad to say goodbye to the genial first-team coach. Powell, speaking exclusively to LCFC.COM, said: "Wherever I have been in football, I have always tried to create a rapport with the supporters. I wear my heart on my sleeve and hopefully the fans can identify with that. "I bought in to the ethos of Leicester City and the supporters took to that. I will definitely miss the Leicester fans and the special relationship we had, but I am proud to have worn the blue shirt, and to have served the club during my spell at the Walkers Stadium." Despite the disappointment over Powell's departure, the former England international left-back sees bright times ahead for his former club. "I served the club as a player and then as a coach and have worked with Nigel Pearson, Paulo Sousa and Sven-Goran Eriksson. There is no doubt that there are exciting days ahead for the club, with the support of the new owners who have shown great faith and investment towards their goals and objectives. "Leicester City is now a vibrant club and whilst I am excited about my new opportunity, I am also sad to leave City, as I have made some great friends." The opportunity to move in to management was something that Powell found impossible to turn down, especially given that Charlton is one of his former clubs. "The last day or two has been a whirlwind for me. I went for an interview yesterday (Thursday), having spoken to Sven about it beforehand. The club allowed me to speak with Charlton and said that I was more than welcome to stay, but they understood that this was something I had to do. For a man of Sven's calibre to appreciate my situation spoke volumes about him. "I know that I am ready for my first step in to management and I am absolutely delighted to be joining Charlton. There has been speculation about my future for a while, yet I have been happy at Leicester City, so I stayed. But the lure of managing one of my old clubs, Charlton, which is pretty much my 'spiritual home', was too great for me to turn down."
Mack Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 I hope I'm wrong but he seems just too nice to be a successful manager. Hope I'm wrong but I suspect he will be coaching somewhere again soon.
Ozwin Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 Will always get a good reception from everyone here, good luck to him, I have no doubt he'll be a success.
Guest Bilo Posted 14 January 2011 Posted 14 January 2011 My only misgiving is that he's actually too nice a bloke for management. I really, really hope I'm wrong because I'd love the bloke to be a success, one of the last true gents left in the game. Mourinho, Ferguson and Wenger for example are all the kind of blokes you'd probably wish to avoid in a pub. There again, Sven is the example of a nice guy doing well in management if that's the route Powell is going to take. Let's hope Chrissy P can emulate him; he's learned under two good managers, one young and one old head so he's well-prepared. Best of luck Chris, we're going to miss you.
