hackneyfox Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 Seems to be good with the players but Oakley is also involved in that role. Defensively we have been very poor this season, who do you blame for that? That isn't me being anti Powell I'm just asking and wondering what this big Powell love in is based on?
James. Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 I think the love in is based on a little more than his skills as a defensive coach. And that's not to say he's a bad coach anyway, particularly given we enjoyed one of our best defensive records and most successful recent periods with him (and Pearson) at the club. Anyway whenever I've seen Powell in interviews he's always come across as an absolute gentleman, a man with a passion for the game and a genuine, honest bloke. I loved his fist punching at the end of games, watching him having a laugh with the players during warm-up - the guy clearly had the respect of both players and fans for the way he conducted himself and the success we've had at the club while he was there. Nothing wrong with a love-in as far as I can see. I'd be very sad to see him go.
Corky Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 I like Powell because he comes across as a great bloke, a true professional and someone who seems to appreciate what football has given him. Our defensive record has been poor this year but as James says Powell was part of an excellent defensive set-up for the previous two years.

StanSP Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 Sven is speaking about the Powell situation on RL at 5:30 I think... If you're responded to Stringer's tweet, then you're jumping the gun a little. He said Berner news at 5.30pm on RL. Sven will know more 'later' on Powell to #cafc. There's nothing mentioned that any news re: Powell will be on RL.
hackneyfox Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 James I think he's a great ambassador for the game, very articulate and did great worked for the PFA. Obviously full of passion, just not too sure about his coaching abilities as so many goals have been given away from poor defending this season. I realise that most goals probably come from mistakes but the howlers this year seem worse than ever before.

Yes, missed the all important full stop Wonder if we can read anything in to the lack of positive comment by Stringer... he normally adds something like "I think he'll stay" or "things look positive"

I don't know if Charlton have made any official comment so it's still speculation. Hopefully Sven can persuade Chris to stay for the time being.

Obviously full of passion, just not too sure about his coaching abilities as so many goals have been given away from poor defending this season. I realise that most goals probably come from mistakes but the howlers this year seem worse than ever before. What about the previous 2 seasons? It seems more logical to me to blame our poor defence on the awfully disruptive start to the season we've had in terms of new managers and new squad members. A good defence, probably above any other position, benefits from stability and leadership, thus building confidence. The environment on and off the pitch hasn't helped this. I'm not saying Powell is the best defensive coach in the world but I'm struggling to see he is to blame for defensive errors this season. Back to my original point, the love for Powell goes beyond this, and in any case looking at our defensive record while he has been at the club I don't think it's fair to base an opinion on just this season.
hackneyfox Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 You can really only count last season as the season before was a stroll in the park. Last season I thought we looked suspect at times, right back was a constant problem especially as Morrison didn't like playing there, and I never rated Hobbs and Morrison as a pairing. A lot of the strength in the defence may well have been down to having Pearson as manager, he certainly had more idea of what to do with a defence than he did with a midifeld or attack.

Hard to say exactly who had what impact. In answer to your original point though people don't just like Powell for his contribution to our defence. For arguments sake let's assume you're right and Powell is a hindrance defensively - for every goal that we have conceded I would argue he has offset that with his contribution to team morale and confidence. The bloke is an infectious character, passionate footballer and a proper professional - these attributes alone can help a side. Anyway whereabouts in Hackney are you?

lcfc_jme Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 I'll probably die a little inside and have a bit of a cry if Chrissy P leaves. Though I'll certainly wish him all the best, even with a nothing club like Charlton. He's an actual hero, deserves to do well. Edit: Before I get pulled up for dismissing Charlton as a nothing club, frankly I don't care and won't be responding to it. They're worse than us for rimming families.

Equally who knows what his defensive coaching skills are and the impact he had? We make assumptions based on the evidence we see/read/hear. That's what I did when I mentioned morale. Fox1651 Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 Bad news if its true. Chris Powell is fantastic as a coach at Leicester City, dont want to see him go

I lived in Besford House on Pritchard's Road, used to love The Dove until it got right up it's own arse. I cycle through the market every morning. boy has it changed with all the yummy mums sitting having coffee. More like Stoke Newington nowadays

We live about 200 metres away from each other. I love the area even with its pretentious side. Parks nearby, decent restaurants, good market on the Saturday. Great part of London in the summer. Not sure what The Dove was like before but I really like the place.
hackneyfox Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 I lived in the area about 10 years ago, probably about a mile and half nowadays. Meeting up with 7 or 8 other leicester fans to watch the game next tuesday in a pub on Great Cavendish Street run by a Leicester fan. If you fancy it send me a mail, we're all old buggers off Bentleys though.

Will bear that pub in mind though, nice to know Leicester has a stronghold in London.

This time I've made the decision to drive to Manchester (giving James a lift in fact) for my second game of the season. I'm an idiot
sdb Posted 13 January 2011 Posted 13 January 2011 Odds have lengthened (is the the right term?) according to a CAFC board, and shortened with Gary Johnson. Fingers crossed, although CP is still big favorite with the bookies. Either would be a great appointment imo.
