Guest ttfn Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Watching the Millwall game last week it did occur to me that as soon as Yakubu played a game without scoring he'd get a load of stick. He barely broke in to a sprint in that game, but was lauded, rightly, for his strength and cool finishing. In games that we're on the attack he'll be an invaluable asset. Otherwise, not so much.
Finnegan Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 I'm amazed at anyone who was expecting anything else. He is infamously lazy.
Fox92 Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Weale 9 - Kept us in the game with a string of fantastic saves. Naughton 7 Bamba 8 - Won everything in the air and looked assured at times on the ball itself. Very good performance. Mee 8 - A big improvement after last week. For his height, he is very good in the air, thus Won most headers. Also, put in some great tackles. Van Aanholt 7 Abe 6 Wellens 7 King 6 - Apart from the goal, he did nothing else really - again. Vassell 6 Yakubu 4 - Lazy. Didn't chase any balls at all. Didn't look up for it. Dyer 5
Ric Flair Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Yakubu and Andy King will win us points with their goals, let the other lot keep the opposition at bay. I have no qualms about a player who scores goals regularly and provides assists but perhaps offers little else, there are plenty of other players who can do the dirty work.
Bryn Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 In a game last night, where we're pinned down, I'd be mighty surprised if the Yak hadn't been explicitly told to hover up front and do little else. You need an out, a focal point, and he got the assist. Look at the amount of time Rooney spends trying to win the ball in ridiculous positions, and then being found not leading the line where you need him.
marbelladave Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Decided to drive last night, bad decision, didn't get in till well after 3.00 and went straight to bed, reminds we of why I rarely venture that far north without staying over... Sat in the family stand which was generally pretty quiet, decent views though. Weale 9. The kind of form that we saw consistently from him in the first part of last season. Shot stopping was good, even from distance, and he was much more dominant in his area than usual. Communication and co-operation with his center backs seemed better than we have seen in some time. Extra point for two very decent saves from distance. Naughton 7. Competent all round performance without ever being at his best going forward. Not much else to say really as a lot of the action was on the other flank. Bamba 8. Massive game, still looks likely to cock up at any moment but doesn't, powerful and decisive in the air, effective on the floor and confident coming forward with the ball at his feet. Very few opportunities at the other end, just the 2 corners I think. Mee 8. Showed great character to really step up after a poor debut. One or two tense moments but otherwise a powerful and commanding performance, particularly effective covering his fullback on his left foot, big advantage over the right footed Hobbs. van Aanholt 6. Somewhat shaky debut but improved as the game went on, his pace covered for positional errors on a couple of occasions, tough match to start, hopefully he will improve given more games. Abe 5. Probably his porest game in recent times, bullied in the tackle, harrassed in possesion his game pretty much fell apart. Gave the ball away way too often, didn't get forward in support, could have been subbed much earlier. Wellens 5. Little sign of his usual beligerence, didn't really compete defensively and managed very little going forward, the sort of performance we saw earlier in the season that had some of us really questioning his ability. King 6. Superb, cool finish for his goal, otherwise a quiet first half, his game is not that suited to the kind of physical battle that was needed last night. After the break he played deeper and contributed much more usefully in our box in a defensive capacity. Vassell 5. Back on the right he ended up playing largely as a defensive midfielder, a role that really does not suit him. No decent ball for him to work with going foward, a fairly anonymous performance overall. Yakubu 4. Asked to play the lone striker without much support, looked immobile and somewhat lazy, nothing like the player we see when we are more dominant. Can't help thinking Vassell would have chased and harried much more effectively and given us more of an outlet. Dyer 5. Driven deep into areas in which he is simply not effective, few real forays forward and never the best defensively, he had the kind of game that was totally forgetable. Subs. Gallagher 7. Came on to do a largely defensive role and was pretty good at it, much improved on his early season form, he was far more effective than Dyer although he was called on to do little going forward. Oakley 7. Replaced Abe to some effect, played the holding role with reasonable assurance but never looked remotely like changing the game until a fine goal line clearance saved the points. Waghorn 7. Only on for a short time, he did enough to suggest he should have replaced Yakubu much, much earlier.
FosseFox Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Having gone to the game last night, I'd rate as follows: Weale - 8.5 - Made some top quality saves and distribution was generally good. However, could have come for a few balls which ended up getting headed into danger areas. A minor criticism on an otherwise good night. Van Aanholt - 5 - Gave the ball away a couple of times when trying to trick his way out of danger. Can see him developing into a good player, similar style to Naughton. Mee - 8 - Quality performance. He won a superb amount of headers and reads the game very well. Bamba - 7 - Headed well, but can look like a bit of a ticking time bomb on the ball. I appreciate he's a cult hero, but I can see why Hibs fans thought he was a bit risky. Also made a couple of errors, including completely screwing up a clearance under no pressure which Sheff Utd nearly scored from. All in all, a very good athlete with a good future at the club. Naughton - 6 - A constant attacking threat and was OK at the back. King - 6 - Brilliant finish, but a quiet night by his standards. Wellens - 8 - very good, best outfield player alongside Mee. A constant pain in the arse to Sheff Utd. Blades fans hated him as he broke up the play and got right up their noses. Every team needs a Wellens. Abe - 5 - Composed on the ball, but other than a few good passes nothing special. Dyer - 5 - A few good runs but all too often came to nothing. If only he could shoot. Yakubu - 5 - Isolated, but looked after the ball well on occasions. You can tell other teams are fearful of him. Vassell - 6 - Similar to Yakubu in that he looks a great player in the Championship. Found space well and constantly beat defenders in the air to win the ball. Gallagher - 6 - Better than Dyer but didn't really do much. Oakley - 6.5 - Tracked back well on occasions to break up play. Waggy - Not long enough to make any impression.
brockmyster Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Weale 9 Naughton 7 Mee 8 Bamba 8 Van aanholt 6 Wellens 6 Abe 6 King 7 Dyer 8 Yakubu 6 Vassell 5 Waghorn 6 Oakley 7 Gallagher 6

Think it was pretty justified to try and get someone on to put a foot on the ball. I do think he needs replacing but he did alright last night and those who don't rate him will never be happy.

Haydos Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Hes not a bad sub but not good enough to start. I agree, and he rarely has done since Sven took over. SO what's your point?
