StanSP Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 For football fans that already go to see Leyton Orient, but not as Orient fans, they'll get attracted to see West Ham at this brand new stadium, taking fans away from Orient. If you take fans away, the money they're willing to spend (albeit cheaper at Orient) won't go to Orient but instead to West Ham. I'm not sure how much of an immediate effect it will have on Orient, but they'll start to feel the effects of lower gate receipts because so many fans have gone to see West Ham. Especially younger fans. If you have a little kid who lives locally, they'll want to see the bigger team in the bigger stadium (usually, not saying this is set in stone) - they're not going to want to go to the traditional Brisbane Road; they'll want to be in the modern and relatively glamorous Olympic Stadium. Basically, West Ham will effectively pinch some fans from Orient.
Raj Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 what would the Olympic stadium hold?...40-50k? If they gave it to Leyton O,how many would turn up? 6-7K Whats the fcuking point? If Hammers get it,they'll turn into another atmosphereless ground just like the rest. seems like whoever gets the fcuker is going to be crying afew years down the road. the whole thing seems ill conceived and devour of much thought. Surely they should have known what to do with the thing after the Olympics when they started building the damn thing? perhaps The New Wembley could have been the New Olympic Stadium...If you catch my drift. Alot of wasted $$$$$$$$$$

James. Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 Basically, West Ham will effectively pinch some fans from Orient. If Orient fans were going to get attracted by bigger clubs they already would have fvcked off to Spurs, Arsenal and West Ham. I don't see the Olympic Stadium as making any difference when they already have big clubs in their vicinity. Contrary to the London football map thing on here awhile ago there aren't dedicated zones for supporters and having West Ham play at the Olympic Stadium doesn't change the fact you've got 3 big clubs playing on their doorstep already.
Corky Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 I can see why West Ham, the club, want to move there- not too far away, stadium pretty much in place and the potential of getting an extra 20k in for some games. But will the traditional Hammers fans, who grew up at Upton Park, want to move?

Ford Super Sunday Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 I think a wiley businessman like Barry H£arn would be kicking up a bit more of a stink if he was really THAT concerned about losing all his fans to West Ham. I've not heard him weep about it, so maybe it's only that big a deal to people who WANT to make a big deal about it
Houdini Logic Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 Why the fuck would this kill Leyton Orient? And why the fuck would they want it themselves? West Ham will still draw their support from the same area, it's just a marginal shift slightly across East London. It's not like they're even moving to the West end or even moving out of London, is it? Ridiculous over reaction. The only people losing out here, really, are the West Ham fans. Completely agree - If Villa moved to Fosse Park it hardly means that we're all going to ditch Leicester and go watch them Don't know why it needs to go to any Football club to be honest
Edmund Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 SAD DAY FOR FOOTBALL. R.I.P LEYTON ORIENT!!!!!!!!!!
BoneDog Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 It is sad for football, well football fans at least, because we are going to lose Upton Park and their club will be moving to another new crappy ground with no soul. That new ground will probably have as much atmosphere as the Puff The Magic Dragon pantomime I took my cousin to in December in the 125 capacity village hall. Can't wait.
