l444ry Posted 14 February 2011 Author Posted 14 February 2011 I was just going to say ive no idea what big society means, and im still none the wiser. To paraphrase a former Prime Minister, there is no such thing as The Big Society. I think what he really meant was High Society!! Or perhaps due to the cuts he's downgraded it to the Medium Society......
Guest BlueBrett Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Big Society may be a bit of an airy fairy way to describe what he aspires to but it really isn't a complicated concept. Anybody who doesn't understand should really just try listening to one of the thousand explanations Cameron has offered (and no I don't mean he has explained it a thousand different ways I mean on a thousand different occasions). Failing that I think a re-assessment of their own intelligence is the only thing for it. Say what you like about it but the 'Big Society' certainly kicks the shit out of the 'Third Way'.
sdb Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 If he's had to explain it a thousand times it can't be that clear. The guy's an idiot, and more worryingly, he's not as incompetent as some of his fellow MP's. Yes that's you Gove and Osbourne.
acooling08 Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 So what does a youtube vid of mashed speeches prove? Better than the fat bastard who was previously prime minister. At least Cameron's face doesn't look like he's been having a permanent stroke.

Zingari Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 I'm more than happy to volunteer for the Big Society just as long as anything I volunteer for has expenses paid at the rate of £150 per hour whether I attend or not. the initials should give everyone a clue Big Society = BS = Bull Shit
acooling08 Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Seriously though at least he has good intentions unlike the previous government.

FoxyPV Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 The 'Big Society' is one where the state rolls back it's involvement in all sorts of non essential things like health, education etc to allow people to accept more personal responsibility and better themselves. OR in reality putting more pressure on charities (at a time when demand is increasing but donations are falling) and family members to carry out essential services for those in need - services that the state should provide. Althoug if you have the money then all the services that the state used to provide are all privatised so you can pay someone to carry them out for you - if you don't have money....well you can always rely on your neighbours to help you out. The 'Big Society' is a big scam.

Webbo Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 For what it's worth I think this "big society" stuff is a load of bollox too. All Govts now seem like they have to have a theme, whether its a citizens charter, the third way, the new deal. It's all about PR and marketing.

The 'Big Society' is a big scam. Or put another way, because it's a very simple concept really-: In the past the Government and Local Authorities have provided us with a wide range of public services. These services were paid by the imposition of Income Tax and Council Tax. Under the "Big Society", public authorities will no longer provide these services. Instead they will be provided by volunteers, free of charge, out of the goodness of their hearts. The public will continue to pay the same tax as before. That's it......

I think the thing that pisses people off so much about this particular load of bollox is that not even Tory activists could define it during the run up to the election.

ozleicester Posted 15 February 2011 Posted 15 February 2011 As a recent arrival here and only knowing the country in its "time of austerity" it seems clear that these leaders have no idea how to manage the problems. 1) The big society is, simply a reduction of services supplied by governments and the responsibility is placed on volunteers. 2) They are too scared to implement tax increases especially at the top end, seriously if you are earning millions per year then you can pay millions in tax. 3) If you cut 30% in spending.. that means there is at least 30% less in the economy, effectively you will need less people to grow/design, manufacture, transport, sell, assemble, collect payment..etc etc. Sadly the big society (to me) represents the moment we have crested the Pinnacle of evolution, people will remeber before that before 2010, governments (eg the people) provided, toilets, care for the weak, libraries, health assistance, arts, sporting grounds...etc etc.. we should all pay more tax = more money in the community = more jobs = more money ......etc etc etc.

'big society' is a big con, it basically tells people 'go to work, pay tax, get nothing for your tax, and then go and do the things that your tax should pay for!!.' How long before we are having to police our own streets and rush round to a house fire with a bucket or knock on next door and ask if they can run you to the hospital cos there are no almbulances???? my spelling etc. is awful...sorry

Oh for the love of god. If you really believe this crap about the bankers caused it all then you are probably beyond all hope. More tax is not the answer to anything.

The structural deficit is why we are having to make sizeable cuts to spending. You could argue that we could have gone on living on credit had there not been a global financial meltdown caused by a whole range of factors, but that still ignores the fact that Labour spent Trillions more than they had for a decade, and didn't really do much with it.
hairy Posted 15 February 2011 Posted 15 February 2011 The bankers did not cause the structural deficit. But they certainly added to it. How much did we spend on bailing them out? The structural deficit is why we are having to make sizeable cuts to spending. Added to that our country's reliance on banking and service industry as a main economic force coupled with the huge decline of UK manufacturing Labour spent Trillions more than they had for a decade, and didn't really do much with it. But I had a library, my children had a bus to school, the less able had carers et etc etc. Now I pay more tax and have less services.
