Finnegan Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Sorry if there's already a thread / poll, I didn't see one. Simple enough question. What are you voting?
BoneDog Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 A whaty-whatun? I don't know what AV or first past the post means! Edit : Just had a quick check on it and I think AV sounds more fair but am gonna read a bit more about it. Can't believe I hadn't heard about this, I knew there was a vote coming up but I just thought it was a local election.
Finnegan Posted 7 April 2011 Author Posted 7 April 2011 A whaty-whatun? I don't know what AV or first past the post means! The electoral commission is here to patronize you help. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPFIpeiq5Uc&feature=related
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 What happens if you disagree with the system that is being used for the vote on how we should vote? I always remember my history teacher saying that Hitler came to power because of Propotional Representation and that if Germany had the same system we had he wouldn't have been elected.
BoneDog Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 I'll have a look at that vid soon, just got a call and gotta nip out.
Libertine Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 They're both shit but I'll probably vote yes. The Tories are bringing in boundary changes along with it so a yes will hopefully counter that a little.
ousefox Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Just been doing it in Politics so here are the main advantages and disadvantages if anyone doesn't know much about it Advantages: • AV would require relatively minor modifications to the existing system and would maintain single-member constituencies. • AV would be more likely than entirely proportional systems to prevent extremist parties or fringe parties from winning seats. • AV would lessen the problems of "split voting" and the necessity of tactical voting. • The current first past the post system tends towards majority for the largest minority. AV tends towards more representative results • FPTP is fair where there are only two parties. AV and other preference systems reflect pluralism. • It is easier to elect extremists and re-elect the corrupt under FPTP. AV cannot elect people detested by over 50% of the electorate. Disadvantages: • It is more complex for voters than FPTP • AV is not proportional – AV is not a PR system and will be unlikely to significantly increase the representation of smaller parties. • It is too likely, as with FPTP, to lead to one-party government. • It will not eliminate "safe seats". • There will still be many wasted votes – even though 51% may have voted for candidate A, that means that 49% of the constituency didn’t. This shows what the 2010 results would have looked like with more proportional systems although AV is no more proportional than FPTP
Houdini Logic Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Where's the option for 'I'm not voting because I'd hate to show the pricks I care'?

BoneDog Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Seen the video and am now fully aware of what the crack is. It is quite patronizing especially as it is aimed at over 18's! If I did vote I would most likely choose AV. It's a big if though, as I believe that until something major changes (which is most likely never) we will always end up with lying, cheating, thieving, conniving shits in charge* who are in the pockets of outside influences and who have no interest in working for the benefit of the overall population. So on that basis - I'm out. *I'm not lumping all MPs in the same bracket because a small percentage of them are diamonds and do give it their all. God Bless. Love and Light.
Gaffer Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 AV voting explained, third round of voting, I think this is wrong, shouldnt the right hand ballot have the number 3 circled not number 2?
The Doctor Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 is this from the video sosban posted? If so then no, once a candidate has been eliminated, the vote of any person who voted for them as 1 is transferred to their next choice (voted as 2) so if a candidate goes in the second count then the votes that were 1 will pass to the candidate marked 2 for the 3rd count.
Phube Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 I'm all for it, especially now I know (thank you informative video) that I don't have to rank all the candidates. I couldn't live with myself having to vote for the BNP, Socialist Worker Party or Labour.... *Shudder*

I couldn't live with myself having to vote for the BNP, Socialist Worker Party or Labour.... *Shudder* Not entirely sure the latter two deserve to be thrown in with the former. I can guarantee I will never in my life vote Tory, but I wouldn't ballpark them in with the BNP! Although I appreciate that wasn't strictly your point.

But I'd lump the other 2 together! Both prejudiced and have vile members. Just against different type of people; one goes on colour/race, the other on people who work for a living. But luckily in my area only Tories or Lib Dems would get close!
Phube Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 I'm not voting because I don't understand. Or you're not old enough to vote...

Whether or not you agree with their politics, comparing the SLP (or any party with legitimate political motives) to the BNP is both silly and offensive. Oh, and Arthur Scargill could teach you and your Tory nancyboys a hell of a lot about a hard days work, that's for freaking sure!
Jimmy Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 AV not that it'll make a difference here, Keith Vaz is untouchable

Alexikokopops Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 I didn't even realise there was a vote coming up
DB11 Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Or you're not old enough to vote... Well I had a voter registration form thingy in the post along with my mum and dad. Has the age rose from 18 then?
Finnegan Posted 7 April 2011 Author Posted 7 April 2011 I didn't even realise there was a vote coming up Sorry, Alex, I forgot. I'll edit the poll just for you.
BrummieFOX Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 Will definitely be voting Yes to AV. The video is hilarious.

Has the age rose from 18 then? When did you become 18!?!?! Christ I'm getting old...
