Haydos Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 I haven't said or implied that at all. i just think we should have got the strikers sorted first because, as Ric says, there aren't many around and it is much easier to find midfield players and defenders. It seems to me we're playing cat and mouse. Waiting for our preferred targets, putting in modest offers and allowing the weeks to pass in consequence instead of getting in with an irresistible offer, making it clear that's the last offer and giving the club a firm deadline for acceptance. We'd know if the player wants to come so the only issue is the fee. This isn't about getting someone cheaply it's about getting a particular player or players to finish the rebuild. They should be here by now and preparing with their new team mates. But it seems as though we've been trying for a while. Besides, plenty have mentioned it and it's true, the defence was the main problem at the end of last season, it was always going to take priority. I don't disagree with what you're saying per se but I just don't think it was practical. Strikers are always harder to come by and more expensive than other positions as well, maybe that also had something to do with it
21st Century Fox Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 As Maynard seems to be our first choice and Bristol are holding out possibly to even see how any move for Long affects Maynard's valuation, it isn't exactly in our hands.
Thracian Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Attack was not really the problem last year was it, defending and getting overrun in the middle against anyone half decent was. Oh and we were playing Real Madrid if you didn't notice, even Barcelona have struggled to take the game to them at times. We had a whole stack of nils against half decent teams (QPR twice, Cardiff, Swansea, Ipswich, Burnley, Bristol City) and, for me, a good part of our conceding goals was not altogether down to bad defending it was down to inability or disinclination to close down quickly in the front third right from the moment of losing possession. In contrast to Real Madrid, we did just the same on Saturday. You mention the opposition but we showed exactly the same shortcomings against RM as we did last season against Championship sides. If we'd dealt with the those problems we might well have gone up last season because we got in the position to make a push and simply failed to take it, whatever excuses you come up.

With our budget we have the ability to have our perfect squad in place by now and to give ourselves every opportunity of being as good as we can be right from the off.

Thracian Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Yes but our problem was DEFENDING last year. We didn't go up because we couldn't DEFEND. It makes 100% logical sense to build from the back as it was our DEFENDING that cost us last year. We scored more than QPR who romped to the title, what does that tell you? Yes, that was one of our many problems but you defend and attack as a team and we didn't. Yakubu was a liability defensively. When attacks broke down he was nowhere. And there were other problems well before the ball reached our back line.
Horibbly Wrong Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Thracian is back, Thracian is back, woah, wooh :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl: (wrong thread to discuss the defence tho)
Number 6 Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 It seems through all of Sven's time here he has been encouraging a passing game, playing the right way. This has meant him sourcing defenders who can not only defend but start attacks from the back. With this being such a big rebuilding job, it's surely more sensible to start with solid foundations i.e defence. Nugent has been added anyway and he scored more than any of our strikers last year.

With our budget we have the ability to have our perfect squad in place by now and to give ourselves every opportunity of being as good as we can be right from the off. You can have all the money you like but if clubs are willing to sell our top targets for reasonable money its a moot point. For clubs that have 20+ a season strikers its a sellers market.
Happy Fox Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Defense was a priority this season, if we can stop leaking the goals we have more chance of a) Keeping more clean sheets
Thracian Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 What?! like that Andy King can't tackle? When Wellens and Abe get 13 goals between them, let alone each, and defend with anything approaching reliability when we lose possession then perhaps I'll turn to Kingy.
Haydos Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 When Wellens and Abe get 13 goals between them, let alone each, and defend with anything approaching reliability when we lose possession then perhaps I'll turn to Kingy. Wellens not closing down around the box is also a massive problem.

Nugent looked potentially dangerous from what I saw Saturday but not without some pace and company around him. I really wish I could play a video on here to show how isolated he was. He was left 25-30 yards from his nearest team-mate at times. Our central midfield players rarely made any of the supporting runs necessary to help him and give him passing options. It reminded me of Cardiff away in the second half.

Pookie Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Last Season clean sheets QPR - 25 Swansea - 21 Leicester - 10 Last Season Goals Scored QPR - 71 Swansea - 69 Leicester - 76 Sven is making us tougher to beat which I feel will keep us in the game longer, especially away from home In the 15 matches away last season when we conceeded the first goal we only picked up just 2 points, compared to the 20 points we picked up when scoring first Of course there could be two ways of looking at this, but I feel we conceeded too many soft goals away last season

Are you Andy King's granddad? I don't think I see King move apart from his goals and for a midfield player, I think we might need just a little bit more.
Kent Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Are you Andy King's granddad? I don't think I see King move apart from his goals and for a midfield player, I think we might need just a little bit more. No, for all his tactical prowess I think he is often blinded by homegrown talent.

And boys, just because we can spend silly amounts of money on players, doesn't mean we should.

Agree defence was the priority but now we need to focus on the attack. We won't score that many with who we have right now I don't think. Yakubu banged in a few of them with a good ratio and he's not been replaces (not counting Nugent). Very interesting stats though!

Absolutely agree, but I think this was partly down to being forced deeper by an exceptional set of players. I agree that Nugent is going to need some help up top though and I am fairly sure Sven thinks this too.
