deep blue Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Maybe if the rumour is true, we are thinking of him more as a winger, seeing that he can play in multiple positions. Obviously we are ok in defence at last. Or maybe as a replacement for Gelson Fernandes, if that deal is falling through. It's taking an awful long time to be confirmed.
MPH Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Come off it, the place was fine before him and will be fine if he never posts again. He's lurking about and I'm sure he'll post again if he has something he thinks is worth sharing. the transfer forum... you can not deny, is a much better place WITH info that people like Bert give us.

Babylon Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 the transfer forum... you can not deny, is a much better place WITH info that people like Bert give us. That's debatable, I've not seen anything in here for some time that has actually come to anything, or been posted in here first.

Thracian Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 All Sven's contacts, a whole bloody close season, our need for strikers well established and we still can't sign anyone to score goals! Pity we didn't get the attackers before the defenders and midfielders but that wouldn't be Leicester's way, would it? I get a big sense of money being thrown around but no sense of us having a truly attacking philosophy and that was well apparent in the Real Madrid game where we were dogged enough but had no footballing spirit of adventure whatsoever. In fact we were ages before we hit a shot on target and there weren't too many overall... Poor Nugent couldn't have less company if he'd been a leper in the desert. If played as on Saturday, Sven's 4-3-3 will be devoured in its own cul-de-sac by anyone half decent. Pace on the break, width from players who can beat people and cross thoughtfully, plus fast passing and getting numbers in the box quickly are the requirements of attacking effectively, We lacked the whole bloody lot on Saturday except for brief glimpses of pace and ability from Vassell. Are we going to go another season with the brakes on? Or are we going to remember the legacy of the last 10 years and have a go for once?

Are we going to go another season with the brakes on? Or are we going to remember the legacy of the last 10 years and have a go for once? 1) Wrong thread. Massively wrong thread. 2) Just because we've got money, doesn't mean we can buy whoever. We don't simply pick strikers off a shopping list. Take, for example, Maynard. We may have had a bid accepted and this would be great. However, he may not like living in Leicester, may not want to relocate, or whatever - its not as easy as saying "we've had all off season, why haven't we signed anyone?!" How many other clubs have signed top line forwards? Very few I'd wager. 3) We were playing REAL MADRID. We probably had possession for less than a third of playing time and most of that was in our own half. How much attacking did you expect us to do against Madrid? What did you want? Adventure?! Danns and Johnson just to wander up behind Nugent and sack off the midfield? Get real. 4) Your requirements of a good team are just buzzwords: pace, beating men, fast passing, getting men in the box? All of this points to an old fashioned way of playing football; we don't have to fill the box to score goals, we don't have to have wide men bombing on anymore. We can simply beat one man in the middle of the park and set runners off in the channels. We won't be playing Madrid every week, I think we'll be fine playing a 4-3-3 which took us from bottom to play-off contenders last year.

To be fair Thracian, there's been minimal amount of strikers available this summer. There's hardly been any move clubs that we'd be interested in. I don't think this is through a lack of of trying, it's just frustrating. If we don't get one in though it could make our promotion challenge all the more difficult. We badly needed a whole new defence and goalie, plus some competition in midfield. We scored a decent amount of goals last season so it's a no brainer where our priority lay but at the same time we must now get a quality foil for Nugent.

Attack was not really the problem last year was it, defending and getting overrun in the middle against anyone half decent was. Oh and we were playing Real Madrid if you didn't notice, even Barcelona have struggled to take the game to them at times.

Sven has done the right thing, he has built from the back and we still have just under a month to get a striker or even use the loan market to bring one in. We had no defence and a rubbish goalie before the recent signings and would have shipped goals easily.
Babylon Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Throw in a few mentions of Alan Sheehan and it could be 2007 all over again.

If we had have conceded 10 less, we probably would have made the playoffs. We will be signing a striker or two but i guess we just have to be patient. To be fair we were playing against Real Madrid on Saturday. You cant make that comparison. 4-3-3 will work fine for us. Did you really expect us to beat them? i think it was a good experience for our players that they can only benefit from. The only way we would have beat Madrid was a) They didn't bring the first team or b) Their players were not bothered. Thankfully that wasn't the case and we enjoyed a good match. No team in the Championship will be 50% as good as Madrid are at keeping the ball. Keep the faith.

Jobyfox Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 I'm sure that we could have done a whole lot more this summer and signed a load of forwards if our targets were poor quality. The truth is that many of our targets will have other options. In most cases they will have Premier League options. None of them are going to commit themselves to 3 year contracts until they are sure that they are making the right choice. Irritating and frustrating it might be, but I expect this to run until the transfer window shuts on August 31st. I'm sure that Sven will have made a signing or two by then, but it may well be dependant upon the loan availability of PL players if he cannot get his first choices. I'm fairly sure that we could have re-signed Elvis Hammond and Mark DeVries by now if it were just a case of bringing in strikers for the sake of it.

Jobyfox Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Unfortunately the season starts Saturday.. So we can either wait and sign one of our first choice targets like every one else who has any ambition has had to do or just sign any old piece of shit for the sake of having someone in sooner. I know what would be my choice.
Jaspa Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Unfortunately the season starts Saturday.. What are you gonna be like if we loose 2-3 times in the prem! Chillout, weve got firepower to deal with Cov and the cup game at least

Thracian Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 You say all of this like Sven's not even bothering. I haven't said or implied that at all. i just think we should have got the strikers sorted first because, as Ric says, there aren't many around and it is much easier to find midfield players and defenders. It seems to me we're playing cat and mouse. Waiting for our preferred targets, putting in modest offers and allowing the weeks to pass in consequence instead of getting in with an irresistible offer, making it clear that's the last offer and giving the club a firm deadline for acceptance. We'd know if the player wants to come so the only issue is the fee. This isn't about getting someone cheaply it's about getting a particular player or players to finish the rebuild. They should be here by now and preparing with their new team mates.

They should be here by now and preparing with their new team mates. Yes but our problem was DEFENDING last year. We didn't go up because we couldn't DEFEND. It makes 100% logical sense to build from the back as it was our DEFENDING that cost us last year. We scored more than QPR who romped to the title, what does that tell you? Also, its not easy to find defenders with the quality of Mills, who nearly went to Wolves, Pantsil, who is a bargain on a free and midfielders such as Danns (nearly Rangers bound) and Fernandes who has international quality. Cat-and-mouse we're definitely not playing. Going in hot and heavy for Mills at a potential club record fee and Maynard at WAY over list price shows that. $4.5 mill + add-ons for Maynard? That's irresistible. This is same old Thracian, I don't know why I'm bothering to reply, you're so deluded. As you're asking:- a first choice striker weeks ago. Its not that sodding easy, we can't force Bristol to sell us Maynard. Ridiculous opinion.
