Walshy5 Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 People may say go horses for courses or whatever but you need to have a blueprint so you can base your signings and plans around it. So what would you be wanting our first choice formation to be next season?
Walshy5 Posted 18 June 2011 Author Posted 18 June 2011 4-4-3 Just realised my mistake . Would be handy though wouldnt it
sphericalfox Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 Sven is in my opinion is building a team that will primarily use the formation 4-4-2, though with the squad available the team should be able to easily revert to 4-3-3 should the need arise dependant on the opposition or home/away. So I'd vote for both. We will have the flexibility and strength in depth to achieve both, and not have the situation like last season where the players on the bench only allowed a like for like substitution, thus not changing the game when necessary.
Mark_w Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 I've always generally been a fan of 4-4-2 but I think with the right signings that 4-3-3 is the way to go, we've got a strong central midfield with Wellens, Abe, King and if we can bring in another battling CM. 4-3-3 gives King a bit more freedom to push on and get his 10+ goals a season and Gallagher has looked a lot better in the more advanced role, so I think if we can bring in the right players to make it work then 4-3-3 is the way to go.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 Sorry, but as you say, horse for courses. The best teams can adapt. Bring back 3-2-5 I say! PS - If you edit your post you can still add a poll. EDIT - didn't see the damn other thread
Legend_in_blue Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 We need to play an attacking 4-3-3 at home and defend from the front in a 4-4-2 away from home next season. We need players who have the intelligence to play the system and adapt to something else when necessary. The key away from home has to be stopping the number of goals conceded as this was far too many last seaon.
Scow Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 It's just the sort of in-depth conversation that we should be having when we've not even made a signing yet. Just for reference: 4-4-2 / 4-3-3 doesn't mean that you'll play in some sort of rigid position for 90 minuites on and off the ball...

Just for reference: 4-4-2 / 4-3-3 doesn't mean that you'll play in some sort of rigid position for 90 minuites on and off the ball... It should be, but there's only so far we can speculate, or simply give our ideal shape/formation, but it will depend on our signings. My instinct tells me that whether or not we sign the players that have been mooted in the press (say that's the most reliable source- we know it's not, but say it is) or not, the players that have been mentioned bar the keeper have all had strengths that indicates the type of team we can expect to see or the type of team that Sven is aiming for at least. Quick and precise passing midfield and defence. There is work to be done but the the core that Sven kept all have those type of attributes. Anyone who couldn't has been allowed to leave. There's work to be done, and i expect others to go too. It'll depend on the signings of course. Weakness in the wings hurt us badly last season. Dyer can run fast a piss, but he can be clumsily at times, and like magnet gets drawn in the centre, because he can't cross, and his strength to just run at defender and scare him to death. That can only work before you get caught out by better defenders, are forced to cross and it never meets anyone or is not good enough for anyone to pick up. Not bad to stick on in the last 20mins at a tired defence. Gallagher can cross and can dribble to. But lacks any speed and for all his trickery. I see Nugent and Derbyshire as more than capable of providing the missing crosses. I remember them both capable of doing this at Burnley, Portsmouth, and Derbyshire at Blackburn & Birmingham. Now Nugent can and maybe should play up front, so maybe in the next week or so we'll see a versatile winger who can switch sides alternatively. It's my thoughts. I don't know if Sven has that plan, but from what i gather from his interviews and discussions about formation and the players that keep cropping up, to me these non-marquee players are exactly what we need. Yak or no Yak.
tylesta Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 No love for the 4-2-3-1, then? quality formation that needs quality players to play it....
Foxblogger Posted 18 June 2011 Posted 18 June 2011 quality formation that needs quality players to play it.... I think on a number of occasions the side were close to it last season. Oakley/Abe and Wellens holding and breaking things up, King with instructions to get forward etc. One of the formations which really impressed me last season was the 4-1-3-2 at QPR, with Abe as the '1'. It almost worked perfectly. If the occasion calls for City to compress the game, perhaps if they're likely to be done to pace or face a side who want to play the ball through the middle, I hope Sven looks at it again.

Guest Col city fan Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 Just realised my mistake . Would be handy though wouldnt it If four-four-fookin-two is good enough for Mike Bassett it's good enough for me... On a serious note Sven is surely looking for the right players to play the formation he wants.. This seems to be 4-4-3 As was said yesterday by spherical I think, we couldn't go far wrong with Derbyshire down the one flank, nugent the other and then a striker to cross it into. For me, whatever the formation or personnel the key is PACE.. We are too slow to build-up and I'd like to see this change
dave_the_fox Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 The problem with 4-4-2 is we have no two central midfielders to play that role(currently!) which is why Pearson always resorted to playing Oakley right wing.

Madrid_Fox Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 Prefer to have a 4-3-3, if not a 4-4-2 diamond formation. It means that the two wider strikers would have to get on the opposing full back's case or the centre midfielder drifitng over to cover when we are not in possesion. Never been a fan of the flat 4-4-2 although it does cover most spaces on the pitch. If we were to play a 4-3-3 the main striker would also have to be prepared to drift wide to keep possesion, not a Yakubu friendly formation!
Wymsey Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 Not bothered if the players adapt themselves well to the formation/s they've been told to play in.
Jakemoore Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 I'll wait and see who we sign first. Bit of a pointless poll this early really, based on our current squad we have no RB so deciding between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 will have to wait
Fox92 Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 I'd go with an attacking 4-3-3 at home, with it turning into 4-5-1 when we go away or something like that, maybe a defensive 4-4-2 when we go away.
