shailen Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 Okay so basically this season, united have already been the team.to beat, and even though theyve lost scholes, neville and VDS they have managed to cope with their loss. I know its early days but damn they look so good. The other thing to mention is that they seem to have changed their footballing style to one which is more freeflowing and attacking, like barcelona, and some of the goals they have scored....nani vs man city and anderson vs spurs, have been.exceptional and in the barca style. To me atm they look a real threat to barcas domination in recent years of football. Anyone agree?

Barca owned them at Wembley last season, and have got stronger since then with the signings of Sanchez and Fabregas. United are still some way off a genuine challenge for the Champions League.

Guest MattP Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 Uhh what? They were runners-up last season and you say they're not genuine challengers? I'm confused.... Very lucky in the draw though, Marseille, Chelsea and Schalke is the easiest route I think of for years, dont kid yourself into thinking they are the second best side in europe. This year if they meet Bayern, Barca, Madrid or maybe even Dortmund, Valencia or one of the Milans on the way they could go out.
Guest Bilo Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 What MattP said. They had a very soft draw and beaten finalists doesn't make a side the second best in the competition. See Germany in the 2002 World Cup for details. Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two best in Europe by some distance at the moment, with Barca just that little bit further ahead. I expect the Champions League to remain in Spain this season.

Valencia have no chance of knocking United out over two legs, and I think Dortmund would struggle big time as well.

They play at a faster tempo, are more direct. Arsenal's current style seems to be the closest to Barca's but they're nowhere near the same league. Granted, Utd's passing game has improved a lot and they're frighteningly good when they're on the same wavelength (which is more and more often by the looks of things). I'd take 90 mins watching Utd over Barca any day, 90% of the time Barca are so dull, fantastic technically and tactically, but not in terms of entertainment.
ramboacdc Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 just wait until liverpool hit the ground running. thats where their closest match is coming in my eyes arsenal: im pretty sure we could beat them now man city: community shield...nuff said chelsea: granted they are winning games but they aint having it all their own way.

Apart from Leicester I watch Barca more than anyone else, an absolute joy to watch, I know its only a friendly but they beat Napoli 5-0 on monday night and it was just absolutely sensational. As good as Man Utd are they would never be capable of producing a performance like Barca did when they beat Real 5-0 at home.
somebum Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 Man United are nowhere near Barca, not by a million miles. United are good but Barca are on another planet. Actually United a very ordinary, which says very little about the teams proping them up at the top of the table.
shen Posted 24 August 2011 Posted 24 August 2011 Very lucky in the draw though, Marseille, Chelsea and Schalke is the easiest route I think of for years, dont kid yourself into thinking they are the second best side in europe. Yes, I'm sure Lyon, Valencia and Inter (only the defending champions) thought Schalke were 'easy'. Valencia themselves finished second in the group behind United. Chelsea have obviously never proven to be a difficult opponent in the CL.... oh wait... And they may not be the second best right now, but a quarter-final, two semi-finals, a final and a win in the last five years, suggests to me that they are among the leading contenders for the title. Saying the opposite is clearly ludicrous! Man United are nowhere near Barca, not by a million miles. United are good but Barca are on another planet. Actually United a very ordinary, which says very little about the teams proping them up at the top of the table. Man Utd 'ordinary'? They may not have the individual qualities of Barcelona and Real Madrid, they might not be as spectacular and flamboyant, but they sure as hell ain't ordinary. They've got the quality to win games from nearly any given situation. I'd go as far as to say that they're the most consistent and proven team in Europe together with Barcelona.
shailen Posted 24 August 2011 Author Posted 24 August 2011 The thing i am trying to get at is that united are now playing a more fluid style, great passing and one touch football...yeah there not near barcelona in terms of this but give it a few years and there could be a second generation of united dominance and hopefully in europe as well. Arsenal are the closest to barca in style, but in quality they are miles off.
Darkon84 Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 Uniteds team had an average age of just over 23 against Spurs. Ferguson has assembled a new crop of talnted youngsters right under everyones noses and no-one really picked up on it. Where Man City have been spending big, Liverpool have been throwing money around at inflated prices, and Arsenal have been losing players, alot of people didnt really notice what Ferguson was doing. He now has another incrdibly talented batch of youngsters (alot of British in there too), who already look like they are playing as a UNIT and appear to have been playing together for years.
BlueSi13 Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 Some people seriously underestimating Manchester United here. Despite there not being a gulf in quality, i think they will have one of their easiest runs to the Premier League title this year due to Chelsea and Manchester City dropping too many points. In terms of the Champions League, Barcelona are a million miles better than anybody right now so it's pretty irrelevant talking about whose the second best in Europe, but it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see a repeat of last years final.
shailen Posted 25 August 2011 Author Posted 25 August 2011 United are miles ahead of city....i can see city finishing 2nd though, but next year if they are to mount a serious title challenge
Guest MattP Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 United are miles ahead of city....i can see city finishing 2nd though, but next year if they are to mount a serious title challenge I'll bet anyone Man City finish within 6 points of Utd.
Charl91 Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 Watched a few Man U games this season. I didn't really rate them last season, and thought they'd struggle this one. However they look much stronger then last year, which is odd.
John Matrix Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 I'll bet anyone Man City finish within 6 points of Utd. my account on here
BoneDog Posted 25 August 2011 Posted 25 August 2011 I watched them play Spurs the other day and they looked really good. They had created a move down the left flank and put a dangerous ball into the 6 yard area within 25 seconds and just kept going! Some of the young lads they've got look like they could well be following a long line of United legends. I reckon they'll have the title wrapped up with 3 or 4 games to go this season.
shailen Posted 28 August 2011 Author Posted 28 August 2011 Well i hope people can see my point in the OP after todays 8-2 win, they were exceptional...the football at times was as good as barcelona...this is a new manchester united team, but i fear that this one is miles ahead of the last generation...only man city can compete in the domestic league.
