GK. Kasper

RB. Paintsil

CB. Mills

CB. Bamba

LB. Konchesky

CDM. Wellens

RCM. Danns

LCM. Fernandes

CAM. Gallagher

ST. Nugent

ST. Vassell (Schlupp was tempting though, as we have not yet seen him in a league game playing in his natural position)

Score? Ermmm... I'll go for a 3-1 Leicester. Mills, Vassel and Gallagher with the goals :)

Do we think Connolly will get a good reception? Used to love him when he was here.

We shouldn't be scared of them.

They are a good side no doubt but we are at home and should fancy ourselves to be able to beat anyone in this league at the KP.

Oh frick. This is the last game before an international break. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I'm sort of glad about the international break! I'm on holiday during it which means I won't miss any City matches

After a bit of moving players around, I found this 4-3-2-1 formation to be the best. For me Danns and King should be playing attacking central roles and with Dyer and Gallagher on the wings looks perfect. Before anyone asks why there are 16 players on the field, I included subs.

Absolutely this

The team pretty much picks itself this week,.

For a change I'm fairly optimistic. We're starting to find a balance in the team, and the strongest XI. We won't underestimate them like we did Reading and BC (not that they're bad teams but the players seemed to assume they'd win). Sven should be realising he can't just pick 11 players and tell them to go out with what appears to be little game plan. Also Soton won't be overly defensive which could benefit us.

All that said, I'd hardly be shocked if we lost.

Actually playing King at the base will improve his attacking threat as his runs will be from deeper and thus harder to pick up, I have given my reasons why many times so I shall not repeat them here.

Gallagher simple does not have the instincts of a striker which made his appearance on saturday in that position all the more strange. As you say he regularly lines up in the wide position and was decent last season, maybe that was because he had an attacking fullback prepared to go past him and provide the real width so he could drift inside to where he is most effective?

With Konchesky that is not going to happen and if we persist with (variations on) the diamond, surely he has to be given a chance at the tip?

With King at the base he'll have too much responsibility. If your theory of "the deeper he plays, the better his runs" is true, why not play him at centre-back? Sorry to be facetious, but what your suggesting is complete nonsense.

King has to be nominally stationed far enough forward to be able to get in the box quickly when we counter-attack. From the base of the midfield, this would be nigh-on impossible, and would require a far greater understanding between other midfielders who would need to cover.

With Fernandes or Wellens at the base, there is always that cover. King should not be at the tip of the diamond. From there his runs are far easier to track. Last season his greatest success came from breaking from a midfield position marginally further forward than Wellens, who in turn was in front of Abe or Oakley. This is where he should be playing.

What a load of absolute shit

Andy King at the base of the diamond? hes not a holding midfielder

god i hate this 5 subs law

Me too. Lack of options on the bench. Forced to make do with versatile 'jack of all trades' type players

Then please explain to me what he actually is.

What is his best position and how should he fit into the team?

I have explained at length my views on how and where he should play, but it appears we might be sticking with the diamond and in that formation the only place I would play him is at the base, perhaps you would like to give your view?

We could all do with a bit of cheering up

If he's at the base of the diamond he wouldn't be getting in to the box as much, and if he is then he is not doing his job as a holding player, as he'll be leaving the defence exposed.

Does't need to get in the box all that much, half to a dozen times a game is ample.

With King quality is much more important than quantity, a few runs, made late so that he arrives at pace will see him score regularly, playing well forward none of these things happen, he now often receives the ball stationary and well marked and is far less effective.

Playing at the base does require defensive discipline so he will not get forward in every attack, when he does the cover must come from the (not so) wide players.

I am not a big fan of the diamond, but if that is the system we are going to play then the base is the only sensible position for him.

I can see where Dave's coming from. King isn't really an 'attacking' midfielder in a sense that he isn't very creative or influential enough for the role behind the strikers, Gallagher would be better at that. Quite a tough one really as I don't quite see him excelling in the holding role either.
