John Matrix Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 With Mills, I fear his £4m+ transfer fee may hamper him as some of our fans were clearly queuing up to have a go at him as soon as he got here. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that much of the criticism he's encountered wouldn't have been shown towards someone we'd signed for £500k, even if they had put in exactly the same performances. The same thing happened with Yakubu - despite his reasonable goalscoring record with us, people just couldn't see past his (reported) wage - even when most didn't actually have a clue what he was on. That said, I think it's fair to expect good performances from such an expensive centre-back - but perhaps a little demanding to expect it right from the off. The price tag is just something he's going to have to deal with I suppose. well yeah..that's the point.
Jordan Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 As Reading were one of the teams we needed to leapfrog in order to win promotion (based on the table last year), I can understand the high fee. Reading would not want to let their captain go to a promotion rival unless someone was willing to pay well above the market rate for such a defender, and not only do Leicester get a proven defender at this level, but they weaken the Reading squad in doing so. Mills is coming around, so I think everybody will win in this transfer. I think Mills is actually decent in the air, and when Bamba cuts down on his risk-taking ways, we are going to have a very strong center back pair.
volpeazzurro Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 You gotta think about how mentally draining the lead up to the Reading game must have been for him. Just off the back of a big money move, playing his first home game, against his old club. That would take a toll on anyone - he is human remember!! C'mon Matty He's supposed to be a £5 professional, mentally draining my arse the big puff, should have bought a wet nurse with him. If he thinks we are now seeing the best of him already, God help us!
somebum Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 I honestly think he'll become a new Matt Elliott type of player, tough and solid at the back. He might not have had the best of starts but hey, neither did Martin O'Neill.
lcfcsnow Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 Bit of a coincidence that every central defender partner of Bambas looks poor is it not? The best example is Bruma - a very good player who came in for lots of critism whilst partnering the bombscare, after a few games with Vitor after Bambas suspension following Reading we saw a much improved player. No doubt Mills and St Ledger are good players at this level, but they're playing with someone who thinks he's Lucio. We missed a trick not cashing in on him, it will be Sven's downfall.

I wouldn't say so. I think Bamba just needs a 'pitbull' of a centre half next to him. He had it with Vitor and did well last season (when they got the chance). Bamba and another 'ball playing' centre back just spells trouble. Millsy just needs to settle into a brand new back four, others have done it quicker than him but I think he'll come good. Mills will start to settle and will become the asset we thought he was going to be. Ihave no doubt about it.

And lcfcsnow is well off the mark: Bruma aside, no defender has looked worse alongside Bamba than not. Vitor was just as good alongside anyone (except Michael Morrison while Sousa was in charge), Ben Mee's best performances at centre-back came alongside Bamba, in particular Derby away. Even Jack Hobbs looked better with Bamba in January than he did at any other point that season.

Vitor was just old fashioned steady and generally good at tackling and heading.
lovelcfc Posted 17 September 2011 Author Posted 17 September 2011 Just like to say thought he was excellent today important blocks winning headers playing alot better i think
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 im glad Millsy played okay today, hope he come good in the long run
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Much much better today. Don't think he missed a header. Made a crucial block too. Distribution was poor still. But defenders are there to break up attacks primarily. If they can pass too its an added bonus
Corky Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Still needs to pass the ball better, but heading wise he was first class.
bluesbrothers Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Yep, a solid if uninspiring display. He's becoming what we need - a basic, no-strings-attatched Centre Half. Gives Bamba the freedom to mop up. That said, he needs to improve his heading in the opposite box! He's doing for me exactly what Abe has done this season - been solid if not outstanding. Abe had a brilliant game today and scored too. But it's been coming, as his performances have indicated. Trust me, the moment Mills nets we'll be singing his praises.
