Mills felt he paid the price for "trying too hard" against his former club but thinks he put things right when he was recalled against Forest. Mills, speaking for the first time about manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's decision to drop him, said: "When you get dropped you are disappointed, but you won't last very long if you stick your head in the sand and hide away. "It was not the first setback I have had in my career and it won't be the last. "It was not my best game against Reading, for whatever reason it didn't happen, and the manager made a decision not to play me against Bristol but I thought against Nottingham Forest I put down a marker." He added: "In the Reading game, my quality on the ball was poor and sometimes that is a result of trying too hard. It was my first home game, I was trying to impress, and I was playing against my old club. "But since then I have learned more about what the manager wants me to do. "I think I am being more true to myself in the way I am playing. When you play with the confidence to do what you do best, it brings out better performances." Mills is still to convince the Blue Army he can develop into their 'Captain Fantastic' after leading the Royals to the Championship play-off final last season. But he is urging the supporters to stick with him, and the team, who recorded their first home win of the campaign with a 3-2 success against Southampton last weekend before going into an international break. "You are going to get people making their opinions public and if they want to be negative, that's fine," said Mills. "But I'm a positive person and, if I have a bad performance, I learn from it and move forward, and I feel I have done that." Mills believes City's home form will be pivotal in their push for promotion. The win against the Saints lifted them to 10th spot and within a point of the play-offs, but he also offered a note of caution. "It is going to be about managing the expectation," he said. "We are not going to be 2-0 or 3-0 up after 10 minutes every week, it won't be like that. We could win games in the last 10 minutes. "But I know the expectation is not going to change. There is a lot of pressure on the squad but it is welcome pressure, we are big players and we have to cope with it. "Everyone's aim is to go up and we are in this business to win. We have gained points and victories away from home and we have to take that into the home games." I know hes not playing great atm but in time i think he will turn great for us

tomlester93 Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Yes he was awful in the Reading game, but he was a rock for 80 mins vs. Forest until the ref decided otherwise, and in the last 30 mins vs. Southampton he had a blinder. Top player.

I'm not suggesting that was intentional just that the whole scenario of playing against Reading seems to have got to him, if that is the case then he needs to toughen himself up if he wants to remain the Captain. Actions speak louder than words when it comes to football, I'll not judge his future potential but he needs to show it on the pitch.

Other than that I think he has started to show his class! Must be tough coming to a new club with our ambitions, given the armband and expected to be Terry butcher every week!

You gotta think about how mentally draining the lead up to the Reading game must have been for him. Just off the back of a big money move, playing his first home game, against his old club. I just don't subscribe to the 'trying too hard' excuse. In fact I said that the whole 'thing' had got to him which is what you're suggesting.
Sods Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 I'm undecided on him, yeah he did play well at forest, but still led to the penalty Poor reffing or not. Bury he wasn't great and lowe won far too many headers, nobody commanded that game. Southampton I thought he wasn't great again, Connolly was free every time. I will take into account that they are probably the most attacking side we will face. Good interview though, bit as davie g said actions speak louder then words.

Freeman's Wharfer Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 I would hope that we haven't seen anywhere near his best yet. Yes, he was okay against Forest, against Southampton average at best. It seems his flick on at the near post to allow Connolly to score has gone largely unoticed. One mistake yes, but one that cost us a goal. Interesting to read his comment "you won't last very long if you stick your head in the sand and hide away". There was a bit of debate about the decision to drop him but he seems to at least have the right attitude towards it. As I said at the time, the players at the club should know now that if they don't perform they'll be out of the side because of the new competition (King and Wellens have both said it in recent weeks) in the squad. If you do loose your place you don't sulk and/or moan, you work hard to win your place back and keep it. Would Mills have such determination to win his place and keep it had his lacklustre performance against Reading been allowed to slide? I don't think so. Hopefully he knows he's had a terrible start and will deliver on his promises to show us his best.
