Jollie Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 I had high hopes of Mills when he signed but I have been bitterly disappointed so far. He was the best defender in the Championship last season, he got it in him.
ramadaone Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 The bloke is now in his 20's so he isn't suddenly going to become a good passer anymore than he will become a poor tackler - he just needs to do things simple with his passing - max 10 yards - and form a proper understanding defencively with Bamba. When its pissing down and cold at Millwall and its back to the wall time thats when he'll come into his own - what people might call an old fashioned centre half ?
Tielemans63 Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Anyone writing him off after just a couple of games is a knobhead anyway. Matty Mills shouldn't worry about the opinions of knobheads. I'm sure he'll prove an excellent addition soon enough.
Guest ttfn Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 I really bloody hope this isn't the best of him
shiv Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 He played well against Forest!? Thought he had a good game. Handball was unlucky but he made crucial blocks and tackles. Konchesky was the weak link in that game.
LilMissFox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Thought he had a good game. Handball was unlucky but he made crucial blocks and tackles. Konchesky was the weak link in that game. Wasn't even a handball, he looked like he had no idea where the ball even was
shiv Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Wasn't even a handball, he looked like he had no idea where the ball even was One of the most ridiculous decisions I've ever seen!
LilMissFox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 One of the most ridiculous decisions I've ever seen! Much agreed, I jus reckon the ref was bought out. Florist couldn't hack it. Anyway though I reckon Mills did pretty well against Southampton, whereas Bamba was a bit of a let down

Mills should only get better as the season goes on.

In a way you're kinda lucky that match nearly gave me a heart attack Pmsl, ...thank god Schmeichel was back for that game. N yeah well I guess we've jus gotta wait n see
Fox1994 Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 I reckon he's had a lot of bad press. Yeah hes been average, but definitely not below average. Give the lad a bit of time to bed in and form an understanding with the rest of the defense.
Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 He's made some vital blocks and interceptions so far and i dont think hes had enough credit for these. His distribution is poor and looks very nervous on the ball. But his heading and commitment is first class and im hoping he can push on now after a good couple of games.
Guest MattP Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Jesus, how good is it to be a footballer. Never heard so much shit. How mentally draining it must be to be playing Reading? Mills will turn into a decent defender, he is well capable at this level, yes we have paid over the odds of course but he will be decent, .... spare us the Anne Frank sh*t though Matt, you have received about 150k into your bank account since you have been here, just get it done.
Saxondale Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 No-one will want Mills to succeed more than the man himself, so, I'm sure he'll come good.
LilMissFox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 No-one will want Mills to succeed more than the man himself, so, I'm sure he'll come good. Practice makes perfect
John Matrix Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 have we got a song for him yet ? millsy millsy millsy to the tune of money money money by Abba how anyone can think his heading is first class is beyond me
LilMissFox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 millsy millsy millsy to the tune of money money money by Abba how anyone can think his heading is first class is beyond me Seriously?! that's the best we got sounds lame, well by reading it, it does N wasn't it a header own goal he scored against Rotherham? Can't remember now didn't get to watch highlights
iancognito Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 He's got a hell of a long way to go before he's a top defender and the money we paid for him was crazy but I seem to recall the likes of Walsh, Elliott and especially Taggart in the not too distant past having mares and bad games. It was only Brian Little's arrival that turned Walsh from a temeramental liability into the legend he's known as today. Matt Elliott had more than a few occasions where he thought he was Pele and gave the ball away with ridiculous passes that Izzet, Parker etc wouldn't have tried. Gerry's first few weeks here were awful and it was only when he got a decent run that he started to get some respect. Hopefully once Mills has bedded in, he can go on to be the captain who led us to promotion. But only if he does the simple things first and stays consistent.

Although Walshie was always awesome, Brian Little just did an amazing job in creating an organised team
HoneyBadger Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 Good lord, if this is the best of him I really don't want to see that worst! If he'd have signed on a free I’d be disappointed with his performances, but for £5m and with the (unfounded) hype, nobody can deny that he should have done far better than he has.

Although Elliott, Walsh, Taggart, etc. were all brought to Leicester for peanuts and then went on to become good players. Like you say, all of them had bad spells when they started at Leicester but I think people were prepared to give them time and cut them a bit of slack. With Mills, I fear his £4m+ transfer fee may hamper him as some of our fans were clearly queuing up to have a go at him as soon as he got here. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that much of the criticism he's encountered wouldn't have been shown towards someone we'd signed for £500k, even if they had put in exactly the same performances. The same thing happened with Yakubu - despite his reasonable goalscoring record with us, people just couldn't see past his (reported) wage - even when most didn't actually have a clue what he was on. That said, I think it's fair to expect good performances from such an expensive centre-back - but perhaps a little demanding to expect it right from the off. The price tag is just something he's going to have to deal with I suppose.

St Ledger doesn't fit that scenario, one mistake and plenty were on his back, I judge Mills on what I see not particularly on what he cost, even if he'd been a free agent I'd still say he's not performed sufficiently well and still looks bewildered as if the game is passing him by, although he is getting better. Even Sven made that judgement and dropped him. I believe he will get considerably better but lets see it on the pitch.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 4 September 2011 Posted 4 September 2011 One day I'm sure that he will open his legs and show us his class.
