No more excuses

Matt Mills believes now is the time for Leicester City to step up and deliver in the Championship.

Captain Mills said there can no longer be any excuses that the new-look team needs time to gel, and that the bedding-in period was over.

The forthright 25-year-old said City can now be judged on how they perform, adding that they were confident they will go to Cardiff tomorrow and show what they are capable of to the nation, as the game is being shown on Sky TV.

"The time has come now where we are not a new team and new players, and we have to step up to the mark," said Mills, inset.

"We can't use the excuses that we are a new squad and are adjusting to the formation. This is a new squad but we have had that bedding-in time. Now people can judge us on our performances.

"I think the team feels more settled in the formation we played last week when we beat Brighton.

"There were glimpses that this team is coming together and I felt Saturday was a perfect example of what this team is capable of, and there is more to come.

"The mentality of this team is that now is the time to step up and be counted.

"We are constantly getting it in the neck at the moment about how we are not performing. That is when you need to be at your strongest.

"You know that nothing is won or lost after 10 games. It is a long season but the press have to write about something.

"It just seems an English way. But us players know that, if you stay in touching distance, you only need to go on a little run and you can pull away. We are in the prime position to do that."

Mills said the way City were knocked out of the Carling Cup on penalties at Cardiff on Wednesday provided extra incentive.

"When a game goes that long and to lose, it hurts," he said.

"It doesn't matter what the competition is or who it is against, we hate to lose.

"That is a philosophy the manager has installed in us. We will be looking forward to trying to put one over them.

"It is a league game and we are fully focused on getting three points because promotion is our target. That is all we have on our mind.

"We look at the game on Wednesday and I think there are areas we can exploit.

"We feel we have settled on a formation that works for us, and if we can reach the heights we set against Brighton then we will be a match for anyone in this league."

I really want him to become our new Matt Elliott! :D

There was something about the way the team played last week v Brighton that was so reassuring. They played as a team with no weak links. The passing was good, accurate and went forward. We swung the ball around switching the point of attack time after time. What we didn't see was the ball going back to Schmeichel, just for the sake of it. Movement off the ball was as good as I've seen for a long time. We were creative.

.

We tackled hard but fair. We were tenacious, chased down and rescued 'lost' causes. We were more watchful of being offside, We were more threatening from corners. We were strong right to the final whistle. We weren't nervous in the last ten or even five minutes.

Vassell played a blinder, Beckford led the attack and terrified the Brighton defence. But it was in the engine-room that I was most impressed. Sol Bamba was sensational. Matt Mills showed signs reminiscent of Steve Walsh. Lee Peltier makes me forget all about Kyle Naughton. Yuki Abe gets better and better.

And then I look at the bench and think 'Thank God I'm a Leicester fan because if I was an opposition fan, I'd be bloody terrified'.

Excuses? That's for other teams to make when they come up against us.

That's why I fear for Cardiff tomorrow. There could be one hell of a backlash after last Wednesday

Now watch him play shit v Cardiff :P

Even though he hasn't played too well yet, you can see glimpses of why he's worth as much as we paid.

I'm yet to see them. I think there are some people hopefully reassuring themselves that he'll come good and desperately trying to convince themselves that we haven't been completely ripped off.

I'm not going to kid myself. From what I've seen I can see that the guy has several limitations and is never worth £5million. But what I am going to do is accept those limitations and not expect too much of him (labelling him the next Walsh, Taggart or Elliott). I'll ignore all of his talk as well because talk is cheap. Hopefully he can become a cog in our machine, going about his business (better than he has done so far) without any fuss, leaving the accolades for those who are distinctly better than him such as Bamba.

I'm unsure about him being the captain. It's probably too late to change it because doing so would knock the guy even more, and I'm not sure there are any real standout candidates for who it should have the captaincy, but as captain he has a responsibility to give interviews such as this one. When he's not playing too well this can have a massive implication on how he's perceived by the fans. As captain he comes out and says "we've gelled, we're going to perform much better", he then doesn't perform individually and everyone is disappointed in the guy who made these promises, the supposed leader, not delivering his very self.

He isn't worth £5 million.

But we signed him for the long-term, we're not going to get rid in January.

Players have had slow starts at clubs and done well for themselves in time. Mills can be the same.

He needs a shave

He'll probably get a close one tomorrow.

I've seen nothing thus far to warrant anywhere near five million. However, we have signed him for the long term and the defensive partnership that can be created with Sol is far more important than their individual attributes.

I see Mills as being no better individually than Jack Hobbs. And the Hobbs/Wayne Brown partnership was as good as the current Bamba/Mills one

I am glad that Mills himself has come out and said that no more excuses can be given. He now needs to put his money where his mouth is... Starting tomorrow

He's definitely a talker but our problem is so often a step forward, then a step back.

It's like one week we go out and think "yep, we played 4-4-2, we got the victory and the whole team looked a lot better".

And then next week we go out, 4-5-1/4-3-3, "we looked absolute shit again, Mills was shit, Pantsil was shit, Beckford's a waste of money".

I just hope we can get out of this consistent inconsistency and go and win tomorrow, showing the kind of team ethic we did last week, playing nice football on the way.

As others have said he's got his words spot on, but it'll effectively mean absolutely fvck all and if anything a counter-production if Mills plays shit and we lose.

So is Beckford. We might be filled with over-optimism after this match.

Yes it's hilarious. I say that Beckford shows up when the telly is on, and that we might have reason for over-optimism. SCHNAP! I feel burned by my own stupidity.

I think you should keep to your flip-floppin Col.
