Ashley Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Hello all. Two quick points. Point number one. I've noticed when ever we have a freekick in a decent position to cause problems(non shooting) we always seem to float the ball to the back post for someone to head back a cross goal, why not whip the ball in faster. Would be easier for players to head a cross goal instead of the floating ball which the player heading back a cross goal would have to do all the work. I think we should range our freekicks around these areas, the 'floating' cross is easy to defend against if you ask me. Point number two. Why are our players scared to shoot from distance? Every time we get the ball around the edge of the box all of our players seem to be scared to shoot almost, why not have a dig. We just seem to pass, pass, pass around the edge of the box. When ever we did shoot from outside the box today, Marshall split almost every shot, with players such as Beckford, Vassell and Schlupp even Nugent(the pace players) running in to pounce ready for the keeper. Thoughts? Still unbeaten away from home. You are my Leicester!
Webbo Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Imo 90% of shots from outside the area are a total waste of possession.Even if you get it on target you're unlikely to beat the keeper (unless it's Weale) from long distance.

Weale is awful as a shot stopper, we should sell him or loan him to another championship rival

Like you said though unbeaten away which is a good start
ScouseFox Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Floated free kicks are easier to take, and seen as we have one person capable of taking free kicks, and he's injured, that's what we'll get. At least Konchesky's floated free kicks float towards the back post, not the back of the Kop like Wellens/Waghorn/Oakley like we're used to seeing.
Libertine Dream Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Shooting from distance is most of the time the biggest waste of possession possible, yes they go in sometimes but most of the time not. Johnson was right not to shoot. As free-kicks, I think its a Wellensism which is spreading through the team again.
CKB Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Ashley makes a good point here.. A few times we were trying to pass it way to much when a shot no matter what would have been the better option, it wasn't like a crowd of Cardiff players were surrounding the ball either when we had some chances to shoot! I can remember at least twice when a shot could have been took, even if it was on target or just over the bar would have been better than just playing it in a line and not getting anywhere! Set pieces apart from a few from Konchesky have generally been seriously poor so far this season, need to improve on it big time! Floating balls in the area rarely work, you need some zip and curl and sometimes banged in with pace and if you get all three it can be deadly!
Bert Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Think we're being coached to keep the ball as long as we can.
CKB Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Think we're being coached to keep the ball as long as we can. Which can result in no end product, we have some good strikers of the ball let them have a few goes i say!
acooling08 Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 For about 90 seconds with a few minutes to go we were camped on the edge of their area and were just passingit back and forth. I was screaming for someone to cross or shoot but they just seem to want to walk it in.
Itsthejoeker Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Konchesky looks like a beast from distance!
Jimmy Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 floating free kicks are almost as annoying as having everyone back to defend corners. players like King have good shooting ability from distance and should do it much more often, I remember a game last year where Gally and a couple of others shot from 25+ and a couple went in, even if you don't score the defenders have to change their approach as you MIGHT shoot, opening up more passing lanes

Who's to say that, Johnson, etc couldn't have won us the game today with a 20 yarder.. Yes it may have gone over but then again like i said it could have gone in and there was numerous times we could have had a pop!

Our set peices are utterly shocking. As for Bert's suggestion that we are being coached to keep the ball? Have we not gone seriously long ball recently?

As for Bert's suggestion that we are being coached to keep the ball? Have we not gone seriously long ball recently? I don't think this has anything to do with set pieces? This is simply about keeping hold of the ball far to long when there are not many options available and still not going for a pop on goal.. If we are playing in lines across the opponents 20 yard line how are we going to create chances? I didn't see many trying to get a killer pass in to at least combat that it just seemed very strange, if you can see no way through then the mentality should be right lets have a crack on goal and see
Rhysm Posted 26 September 2011 Posted 26 September 2011 Have to agree with the point about the floating free kicks and set plays. I am sure that we have potentially 2 of the best offensive headers of the ball in Bamba and Mills yet they never offer any kind of threat at all currently (particularly from corners). Think about that Man City game with Bamba and the goal Mills scored against us last season. While I am pleased that the defence is looking a lot more solid these days and that we managed a point, why can't we spend some time on offensive set plays? We had a few corners that could have been the difference between us picking up 3 points and just the 1 yesterday.
TrentFox Posted 26 September 2011 Posted 26 September 2011 Konchesky looks like a beast from distance! He doesn't look much better close-up !!!!!!
kam6 Posted 26 September 2011 Posted 26 September 2011 I was having a similar discussion in the pub yesterday about the free kicks and corners. overall our set pieces are shit. Wellens only floats the ball and 9/10 times the opposition keeper gets the ball. we need to start shooting from distance, one of the shots will go in!

Thoughts? Still unbeaten away from home. You are my Leicester! Two good points in my opinion. Floated free kicks are a waste of time. In my opinion, we need them drilled in so Mills can just get a flick. Last season Reading drilled them in, and corners, and Mills just touched it to guide it in. With a floated free kick, our player would need to use all of his neck muscles possible to try and score. Drilled for me. On top of your point, and my comment, why the hell do we always aim at Bamba? He wins sod all in the air as he heads it wrong. He gets over the ball like a giraffe and heads it down, where as Mills will head it direct. It does my head in when we get a free kick we aim it at Bamba. There is a reason why he hasn't scored with his head for us (I don't think he has anyway). Regarding long shots, yes please. Sven said yesterday not to shoot from long range because 'we give the ball away', but we end up giving it away anyway because we pass it about around the edge of the area/6 year box too much. If you shoot from long range anything could happen, yes it could go over, but as Wolves saw on Saturday with Roger Johnson; a defender could score an own goal or it could deflect it etc. Free kicks and shooting are down to management though. If Sven tells the players what to do, they arn't going to go against him. Change it, Sven. Imo 90% of shots from outside the area are a total waste of possession.Even if you get it on target you're unlikely to beat the keeper (unless it's Weale) from long distance.
Lambert09 Posted 26 September 2011 Posted 26 September 2011 Yuki had a go from quite far yesterday got blocked though, was very shocked tbh. Johnson was looking to shoot everytime he got round his man, the only reason he didn't was the fact that Cardiff had so many players behind the ball. They defended in a nasty mannor yesterday and I couldn't see us scoring from any set piece in the second half, they had the main boys marked a treat
