RumbleFox Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Good morning all. Don't think I have ever posted a non Foxes related thread on here before but now you lucky so-and-sos get some undiluted Rumble genius to bite down into. That's right, close your mouths around the sinewy flesh of this beast of a post. I would like to start a conversation about religion. It is my favourite subject. I could (and do sometimes if I'm honest {and I like being honest) talk about it for hours. So here goes... Right, I am an atheist. That's right, an atheist. I firmly, firmly believe that there is no god. Any god. Not even Thor though that would be pretty good. I would just like to hear people's opinions on this and if anyone believes in some form of deity I would like to know why. I just cannot understand how it can be looked on in any other way than a silly fairy story. Now I do not want to talk about the ills of religion or the evil (or good I suppose) that it does. I don't want to talk about it's poisoning effect on the world or anything like that I would just like to hear fellow FoxesTalker's views on it's validity. On how it can be believed or why it is believed or if any of you believe in this silly little delusion (yes, I am being a little inflammatory in my language there {oooh I' a a precocious wee scamp}) I would like to hear why. I have genuinely, honestly never heard one sound argument in favour of the existence of God. And I don't want your "but look at the hope it gives people" or "but I like, saw a miracle once" rubbish. Arguing for it's benefits has no relevance to it's validity thank you very much (God I'm an arrogant pr1ck sometimes {but I'm a nice fella honest [oh, and I love a bracket!!!]}). So, either ignore this or let's have a wee chat but please, just about how/why people believe in it I don't want this to become a religion bashing thread (though I would enjoy that too as I am a horrible little cvnt of a man). God bless you. Rumble. X
The Doctor Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 oh shit. You've really opened a can of worms here, everyone take cover. Personally I can't stand most religions -I can't believe there is a god with the cruelty and suffering going on in the world but also religion tends to have a big part in most wars, from the crusades, to WWII, to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o&feature=feedlik edit: definitely a devil though - no way could coventry happen due to humans.
Guest MattP Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Think it's bullshit, astounded people still believe in it. Teaching religion to kids before their brain has developed is child abuse.
RumbleFox Posted 21 October 2011 Author Posted 21 October 2011 Think it's bullshit, astounded people still believe in it. Teaching religion to kids before their brain has developed is child abuse. Ha ha, this exactly! We may not agree on WOOF but we can unite our mighty powers on this one!
Zingari Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 It was good fun in the old days when you could stone non believers , sacrifice goats or young virgins and burn witches , but it's all a bit too tame and sanitised now . Basiclly it's just a few old devil dodgers turning up every sunday to sing a few hymns and praise the lord on the off chance that there is a god . Religion is finished thanks to the do-gooders and health and safety nazis
Haydos Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Think it's bullshit, astounded people still believe in it. Teaching religion to kids before their brain has developed is child abuse wrong. I'm 22 now and I was thinking this the other day. Looking back I very much took it as (excuse the pun) gospel. Granted I went to a C of E school in the countryside but they taught Christianity like it was fact and it seems weird that it was only 10-15 years ago. Anyone know how it is at primary schools nowadays? Either way I found it weird and I'm glad none of it stuck.
flowwolf Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Religion has always been about control. Thankfully most people in this country through education have freed themselves from the emotional blackmail and fear that once ruled all of our lives. The problem we now have is educating the new comers to our land of the free thinking to abandon the doctrines they have had forced in to their very being. Getting them to understand they have been and are being used is the hardest task of all.

That's very true , and it seems pretty obvious now , but I believe we are still being controlled , but by much more sophisticated methods , This is probably the reason that religion is being allowed to die as it's no longer needed by the ruling elite .
Master Fox Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 I was cold, I was naked, were you there, were you there? I was cold, I was naked, were you there.
flowwolf Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 I was cold, I was naked, were you there, were you there? I was cold, I was naked, were you there. Thankfully no.
RumbleFox Posted 21 October 2011 Author Posted 21 October 2011 I agree with you all about the controlling mechanism that religion certainly is but what I wanted to mention on this thread was that I find it almost impossible to believe that anyone, deep down, really truly believes in it? How can one look at the evidence (even if brainwashed as a child?) and believe it? X
Master Fox Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Thankfully no. It's been so long since i was touched.
Houdini Logic Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 I was cold, I was naked, were you there, were you there? I was cold, I was naked, were you there. And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter, were you there.

EnderbyFox Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 We plough the fields and scatter. The good seed on the land But it is fed and watered, by God's almighty hand?
MikeyT Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 I don't really believe in anything at all. I also think that when we die, all that's after is nothing, like a dreamless sleep. I really hope i'm wrong and that there is something more, but i can't believe there is. I suppose at the end of the day no one can prove God exists and no one can prove he/she/it doesn't either. As long as religion, no matter what belief system, isn't being shoved down my throat, then go and believe what you want, but as i said, i don't want anyone shoving their belief system in my face and telling me i'll go to hell if i don't repent or whatever. I know very little about religion, but obviously i do know what i see all around the world, and that's that it "seems" to cause nothing but conflict.
davieG Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 We plough the fields and scatter. The good seed on the land Keep on the subject MF this is about religion not your sex life.
Master Fox Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Keep on the subject MF this is about religion not your sex life. Sorry G.
