Religion!

Religion at its purist form is a great 'idea' bringing people together and sharing love amongst themselves.

But when men got hold of religion they twist and turn it to their advantage which im surprised they've been allowed to do.

But when you go into the finer details of religion especially Christianity you realise how obsurd the idea is i mean a man creates the earth in 3 days then it takes him 1 day to create the entire universe around it.

I mean ffs how silly must people feel when they actually look at the facts and realise that they believe in something that is totally without evidence.

People use the premise of war to decide which is deadlier religion or religiousness. They will use the Stalin,Hitler,Pol Pot excuse which ofcourse is a silly silly argument to get into

For me, the whole Universe is evidence of there being a God.

Ok i understand your view but may i ask

Have you any evidence for this ?

Is it not enough to see that the garden is beautiful, without having to imagine fairies at the bottom of it?

Douglas Adams quote. Excellent work. :D

Scardey primitive bollocks all religion may be, you still have to admire (purely as culture, not metaphysical revelation) many of the works of those who believed in it:

I went to C of E schools, and the hymns of my youth strike me now as musically catchy propaganda:

'Onward christian soldiers'

'All things bright and beautiful'

'O come, all ye faithful'

'There is a green hill far away

Fairy stories, but deeply embedded in our culture...

Everybody has to have something to believe in, and I believe I am ready for another beer.

In the beginning there was the word. It came from a prmative man who pointed to the night sky which displayed many consetellations resemblling images of mighty warriors and uttered the words 'Uk ogg'

God may exist but not in a physical form. God is noun to describe the universe and all the wonderful things within it. God is anything in the vast galaxy of ours. I admire the berauty of all this but do not believe that this god was in physical form and wave a hand to create things.

Is it not logical that the lack of knowledge about how things worked, what stars were?, the inBILITY TO READ AND LEARN PROMPTED EARLY MAN TO SEARCH FOR ANSWERS WHEN THEIR CROPS FAILED OR BLOSSOMED? wHAT WOULD THEY MAKE OF THE UNPOLLUTED SKYS THAT DISPLAYED GIANT FIGURES THAT LOOKED LIKE MEN AND ANIMALS? WHEN LIGHTENING STRUCK WOULD IT NOT LOOK LIKE THE GREAT FIGURES THROWING THEM? wOULD THEY NOT THINK THAT THEY HAD DISPLAYED THem in some way (sorry about the caps only just noticed) they had displeased them so had to give something in return. All this makes perfect sense to me. but it was thousands of years ago before science became available to all. We now have discovered fossiles dated billions of years before the time that is still believed the world and univerese was created

Why cannot people just accept that we are uniquue accidents of nature. Molucles coming together in million to one chance of creating the right combination to form life. I give thanks to my mother for bearing me for nine months. I give thanks to the bus driver taking me on my journeys. I give thanks to those that work in factories to produce foog that enables me to survive. But praise an imaginary figure that supposidly exists just to receive praise? No thanks. It is not worthy.

It is completely and utterly obvious that there is no god anf therefore should be no religion.. the bigger question for me, is....

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BELIEVE IN GOD?

I think when you answer that...it all makes sense.

Wow, been away for a week and enjoyed reading this on my return. Gonna put my two penneth in again now (and in some areas completely steal from Mr Dawkins!). I think people only believe because it is ingrained. If we were to step back and look objectively at the following would we really believe that:

A magical, all powerful being that has ALWAYS existing got bored one day and made some toys to play with. He created male and female toys and then put them in a beautiful garden and then was petty enough (even though he is all powerful) to play mind games with them and tell them there was a certain fruit they could not eat. Then, when they ate the forbidden fruit this loving God not only punished THEM but punished all over mankind, forever. Then this God creature thought he might forgive us all for something some made up ancestors did a few thousands years ago but instead of just forgiving us decided to send down his own son (who was also himself) to Earth so that he could then be killed which would then mean that we were forgiven for a sin that someone we have never met, and never even existed, carried out 6 thousand years ago (when the world was created apparently). This God is also so needy that he wants us to pray to him everyday and constantly feel guilty for giving in to desires which he instilled in us anyway.

I could go on for hours but can't be bothered. Basically, a man in the sky who is also his own son yet also has no dad and is also a holy spirit as well created us for a bit of a laugh but loves us even though he punishes us for doing things which he has deemed as wrong. And if we do not do as he wishes he will send us to burn in hell for all eternity! Read that again, ALL ETERNITY!!! That is the punishment whether you murder someone or decide to do a bit of work on the sabbath or steal or cheat on your partner! You will burn in hell for ever and ever and ever. Punishment doesn't really fit the crime does it? Especially when the judge is such a loving god.

Anyway, rambling now.

Love you all.

God Bless.

The way you put it, it all sounds nonsense but I suspect there will still be some believers. It is a lot easier tto tell a child that a rainbow is caused by magic. One example of the many lies that have been told to children over the centuries,.

I have just started a new blog and anything like the above post would be suitable. I want to do some stirring and I have my giant wooden spoon ready. Link to the link. below.

Not all religions are the same and believe in this 'man' like being who is the creator, destroyer and punisher. Not all religion is about control etc. There are religions that believe a supreme power or force that is beyond that, that has no form, but is like a form of energy, that the whole universe is part of and in synch with and once we go beyond this form we merge into this energy. There are religions that believe in evolution, believe in life beyond our universe.

The problem these days is that Athiesm has become the latest religion, Athiest, like religious groups before are now targetting those negatively that do not share there beliefs. I like the concept of of discussing religion, and religions of the world are a keen interest of mine, but there are many differences, and many unique perceptions.

But key facts are that your more likely going to adapt the religion your born into, most people that follow a religion know very little about there faith, so it's a cultural thing, and as science answers more and more questions of our existance and surroundings, then the more acceptance of certain faith becomes.

The issue isn't always the religion, it's the people in control or administrations of religions, just like our goverments today, use there power to a mens to an end.

In some ways I agree with the DR, I do not believe in a physical god One that does miracles and is all knowing and all seeing. But if you were to lumpp togrther the universe, galaxies, the creation of life (by chemicals) the earth the moon the oceans and many others things and ask me one word for them all then I suppose god would be as good as any other. I I have no problem if anyone wants to say that the two particles of energy that collided thus starting a chain reaction was a 'god' as long as they dont say that it was a physicle being and should be worshipped.

The whole "Atheism is just another religion" thing is so tired by now surely and gets brought up far to often. It really isn't anything like a religion. We are not claiming anything or saying anything and we certainly do not carry the burden of proof. All we are saying is that we do not believe religious people's claims. We choose to believe what can be observed and tested and if new evidence comes around we will happily CHANGE OUR MINDS. I hate writing in capitals but that is a very important point. A scientific viewpoint is so far from fundamental. We believe the big bang theory bacause the evidence for it is all around us and it is the best explanation we have so far of how this ol' universe started. However, if a new, better, more robust theory was put forward we would shift our viewpoint. We have no fixed ideas or complete thruths but we believe what the evidence tells us. And you say there are religions which beleive in evolution, etc but there never used to be. They have only started to say that because science has opened our eyes. If the bible (and I am sticking with the bible but any other religious book could be cited here) truly were the word of God then surely it should be infallible? It should be the most amazing book ever written. It should have no inconsistences and certainly shouldn't have to back track and change it's mind because man has suddenly figured something out. Oooooh, I love a bit of this. X

Will you be a writer for my blog rumblefox?

We are one-without the help of a god. By that I mean that we can live pefectly decent moral lives without the need of religious leaders telling us what path to take. Humans belong to the planet earth and planet earth belongs to all humans. We are the same. As one.

I believe in God. It makes sense to me and I really object to people making out that you're stupid or uncultured by believing in god. It's atheism as a religion - they proselatyse and belittle the "non-believers" and say terrible things happen to those wjo don't believe what they believe. How is that any different from many religions?

Why do I believe in God? I think it's because most people (there are some that don't - or at least ignore it) do have a sense of the spiritual, an wanting to understand our place in the greater scheme and a feeling of 70 years just isn't enough. Why are we like that if all this is just life creating life - have we "malfunctioned"? I also look at myth, legends and the holy writings of the different religions and it seems clear to me that whilst they differ they have huge similarities that speak to me a shared history... in the distant past supernatural events occured. (It's what Jung called Racial Memory.) I also see through history how we (humans) were once quite advanced and it's really only in the past two hundred years that we've surpassed the ancients, as if we had fallen from grace - a common theme of all religions and myths.

Finally, as for criticisms that believing in God means you can't have fun.... do I look like I'm NOT having fun?

Oh, wait, I forgot... I'm a City supporter.

The driving force of evolution is an instinct to survive (i.e. not die) and reproduce. That is exactly what you are saying of 70 years not being enough, you want to survive, not die - that's no different to any other animal. Certainly no proof of a God.

People believe what they want to believe. The thought of growing old and dying is crap, so people believe they will go to heaven/paradise/be reincarnated etc. as then you don't have to accept that death is the end.
