Svens signings are better than the 'old guard', with the exception of Lloyd Dyer He just ain't getting them playing properly, cos he don't have a clue anymore... Give it till Christmas then Change the manager, not the players IMO.

Jimothy Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 No. He has two ways he can go. He either plays 433 with Beckford as the central striker with Nugent and Vassell either side. He has about a million midfielders to fill the midfield 3, but should probably go with Fernandes holding, Johnson, and then one from Abe, King, Wellens and Danns. Or he can go 442 with with Beckford and Nugent up top, Johnson and Fernandes in central midfield and Dyer and Gallagher on the wings. This diamond midfield doesn't create enough against some teams, especially teams who play defensively and don't take the game to us. It's no coincidence we've done well against teams who have probably gone into games thinking they could beat us (Southampton, Derby, Brighton) but struggled against teams who have gone into the game thinking they'll be lucky to get a draw and plan to nullify us with a defensive formation (Millwall, Bristol City, Barnsley).

In fact, how much did he spend on players that were 'surplus to requirements'? Nugent......Free Konchesky.....? Pantsil......Free Johnson.....Loan Ball......Free Schmeichel......Not surplus.....Bargain @ £1m Peltier.....Not surplus.....? St Ledger.....Not surplus....£1m? Fernandes......Loan Danns.....Free Beckford and Mills are the only ones we've spent real money on, one was his teams top scorer in the Premiership and the other was rated by many as one of the best, if not the best centre backs in the division. There weren't many complaining about the signings at the time. I'm not saying he shouldn't take responsibility, just that I bet you can't find a previous post from you that disagreed with his signings when they were made.

The only improvements are Kasper as every other position is no better than last year .

I agree to some extent that we need more width, but our centre midfielders aren't strong enough physically to play 4-4-2 and we'd get overrun in midfield by teams who pack the midfield which is the majority in this league. I'd be tempted to go with the following formation: Schmeichel Peltier Mills (St Ledger whilst Mills is suspended) Bamba Konchesky Dyer (AML) Danns (LCM) Fernandes/Abe (DCM) Johnson (RCM) Beckford (AMR) Nugent This formation would allow us to play 4-5-1 when not in possession and make us hard to break down and switch to 4-4-2 in attack. If the attack breaks from the right, Beckford becomes the second striker, if the attack breaks from the left, Dyer becomes the second striker. It'd also give us cover for when Peltier/Konchesky go forward as we'd have the pace from Dyer and Beckford to track back, and one of the centre backs could cover the full back position with Abe / Fernandes dropping into the centre back position still leaving us with 4 across the midfield. I think we'd be a very good team with this formation. Whether or not our players have the intelligence to play this way is a different matter.
