FIFA Ban Poppy on England Shirt

Recommended Posts

England played France last November - no poppies were worn.

England played Brazil the previous November - no poppies were worn.

England played Germany in November 2008 - no poppies worn either

England played against Croatia [2007], Holland [2006] and on 12th November 2005 against Argentina - No poppies were worn on that day either.

Wasnt the question. None of those were played on the actual weekend where its far more significant to wear one, I sometimes wont wear one on the week but always do on the sat/sunday.

Hold on, The 12th of November isn't on the weekend it's significant to wear one?

In 2005 that was a Saturday (much like this year) and so was the day between Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday (like the Spain game is this year).

Oh and I'm relatively certain all those ties were played over this period of November, as that's when the international break almost always falls.

Now then, there is no need to wear a poppy to show respect, the silence and black armbands should be enough (Not that I believe it's necessary to SHOW respect, I see no reason I can't just feel it without having to make it known publicly). If the FA want to do anything then put their hands in the pocket and put their money where their mouth is, otherwise shut the hell up, you've not done it before in the same situation so there is no good reason for you to make a big fuss out of it now.

surely the whole emphasis of the poppy appeal is primarily to amass as much cash for the British Legion as possible.

Yes they may gain alot of publicity if the team wear the poppies but surely its about getting as much $$$ for the charity.

Instead of making a massive deal out of it and havinf FIFA hate England even more than it does already, surely the players can just donate alot of cash to the charity???

Ive said this before and i'll keep on saying it until someone takes note!!!

I've taken note.

6 England fans have managed to get onto the roof on FIFA HQ to stage a protest :crylaugh:

Just to add some meat to the bone so to speak

England v's France 2010 17th November

Remembrance Sunday 2010 14th November

England v's Brazil 2009 14th November

Remembrance Sunday 2009 8th November

England v's Germany 2008 19th November

Remembrance Sunday 2008 9th November

These games were all after the event, saturdays game is sandwiched between remembrance day, and remembrance sunday, which is why it has been highlighted. No smoke and mirrors, just the way the fixture fell.

Nov 10th 2001 - vs Sweden (friendly)

Nov 11th 2001 - Remembrance Sunday

Nov 12th 2005 - vs Argentina (friendly)

Nov 13th 2005 - Remembrance Sunday

The idea of Poppies on shirts, started by LCFC around 2007

all info from Bentley's.

Just to add I don't think England need to wear them.

This is amazing. They went to Zurich for this? :D That is top class commitment to the cause.

Certainly can't argue with the commitment :crylaugh: Makes you wonder how much the EDL is actually making if they can afford to fanny off to Zurich midweek......

lol The EDL single-handedly devaluing the campaign.

That will stop the England squad harping on about it now!!!

I'm sure if you were able to ask any of the men who have given their lives for our country if they'd prefer the Prime Minister to be focusing on badgering FIFA into allowing some football players to be allowed to wear a poppy for 90 minutes or for him to put that effort into sorting out a decent pension for their widows to live on, you'd assume they'd go for the latter.

Ahhh now that IS political and utterly missing the point of what wearing a poppy with pride means !

The poppy denotes the blood shed by Servicemen and Women who died fighting for our Country .It is our way of remembering them and honouring their memory pure and simple .Nothing remotely political about it !

If we choose to wear,as we should, that poppy emblazoned on our teams shirts at the week-end then Fifa should butt right out and respect that !! End of !

My point was that theres more important things to concern ourselves with.

How about each player gets a temporary poppy tattoo on their forehead?

They`ve just read an E-mail out on SSN about the players getting temporary poppy tattoos on their forearms...

And to quote the guy reading it out "the idea is gathering pace" .....

My personal view is that any and all support ex-servicemen and women and their dependants need should be wholly provided by the Government on behalf of the people after all it was the Government on behalf of the people that sent them to war even if many of those people didn't agree with it.

There should be no need for the British Legion to go cap in hand to the public, relying on charity to make up any short falls.

By all means let's remember these people especially those that were conscripted and had no choice in whether to fight or not and let the public feel free to wear a poppy or not without feeling ostracised which many anti-war people do.

I prefer the White 'No More War' Peace poppy a peace that many, especially those in the 2 World Wars thought they were fighting for.

Or just donate the match fee to the Charity that it represents...The Royal British Legion.

Because .........

Each poppy represents the blood of Servicemen/women who have given their LIFE fighting to make this country what it is !!

Not just some charity begging for money !!!

Is this poppy endorsed by the Royal British Legion too or is it a seperate entity on its own?

Though they died in wars that had political motivation, by that logic any islamic nation could place a symbol for their dead be it right or wrong on their shirts making it political. FIFA govern a SPORT they aren't around to interpret any possible perceived political attachments to anything adorning a shirt.
