Socks Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I've been in agony with one of my ears over past couple of days and then last night it went totally deaf and then basically hurt so bad i couldn't even lie down and pain was going all down the right side of my body So i went to the quacks and basically I have an ear infection and a perforated ear drum so I got meds and not going to work for rest of week but I'm worried that my hearing will never come back in the affected ear (but the quack says it will) I know this aint a med forum but has anyone else ever had this before ? Did your hearing come back ? And before you reply with "pardon?" i've had all those cracks all day of the wife......
Socks Posted 30 November 2011 Author Posted 30 November 2011 You're as good as dead I'm afraid. thought so....
Rincewind Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 Pardon, what did you say? Oops. Never read the whole post. Wanted to be the first.
davieG Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I've had perforated ear drums nearly all my life, there wasn't the medication there is now to heal them, well there was but it wasn't available to the likes of me. Even so I could still hear in them until recently when one gave up the ghost leaving me with just the one half good ear. Even that one goes deaf now and again when I've got a really bad cold but so far the hearings always returned. The perforations themselves are not the biggest problem although if they don't heal up it obviously it leaves your ear open to infection through swimming and showers etc, even if they don't heal you can have grafts put on them. I guess the worse that is likely to happen is your hearing may not be A1 but there's many people like that these days through listening to overly loud music. Best of luck anyway.
Rincewind Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 You won't be able to hear X-Factor. Lucky bastard.
z-layrex Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 In the very rare case it doesn't heal by itself, just go back to your doctor. I can almost promise you it'll heal, but if it doesn't there is things that can be done about it so don't worry.
Socks Posted 30 November 2011 Author Posted 30 November 2011 ok thanks guys! glad about X-Factor ! And ant & Dec....ill just go to bed and watch spurs...
Rincewind Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 Bob Guildaff is organizing a special concert. Hearing Aid. I'll do it. GROAN.
AoWW Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I had a similar thing with an ear-infection. The worst pain I've ever known. I ended up ringing my Mum at 2am in the morning, sobbing down the phone and just begging her to take me straight to the hospital... I was literally climbing the walls with the pain. Before my Mum even arrived I heard a weird popping sound in my ear, liquid started oozing out, but the pain eased immediately. I was completely deaf in that ear for a few days afterwards, but it cleared up by itself. I think I had reduced hearing in that ear for a few weeks but it returned gradually and has been fine ever since. Hope your ear heals up ok... just wanted to share my own experience.
Guesty Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I had it quite a few times when I was a kid. Used to wake up with this yellowy liquid on my pilllow. It should all heal; don't worry about it.
Bryn Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 Your eardrum is just a very thin layer that separates the outer ear from the "internal" ear (the middle ear and the inner ear, medically speaking). It's designed to move with sound vibrations. The vibrations are then conducted through tiny bones (ossicles) in your middle ear towards a "window" inside your head, and then the vibrations disturb fluid beyond the window, further inside your head. These vibrations in the fluid are detected by tiny hairs, which stimulate nerves, which send messages to the brain and thus your brain detects sound. So the eardrum is just a tiny part of your hearing. It's clever - it's bigger than the tiny bones, so it picks up lots of sounds and amplifies them, by transmitting all that energy into the much smaller bones. The energy is then transmitted as vibration all the way to the hairs inside your head, which interact with the brain. What's happened in your case I'm guessing is that you've had an infection that began in your nose or throat, travelled up a tube connecting your throat to your middle ear (where the little bones are, just beyond the eardrum) and weakened the drum, causing a hole to form in it as it was moving about as normal. This is incredibly painful, relative to how minor an event it might seem when it's written down. This excessive pain is probably what leads to people being really worried. The fact of the matter is it's only that layer that's broken; the internal structures and mechanisms that allow you to hear should be completely intact, unless the doctor informed you otherwise (which he would have done). I imagine the doctor gave you painkillers, and possible antibiotics. The painkillers stop it hurting, the antibiotics clear any bacterial infection and the layer, as any other part of the body, will heal itself in due course. In the event that your perforation is so severe it can't heal itself, there is surgery available to repair the eardrum. Remember, your ability to hear is completely intact, so all you need is for that eardrum to heal over. If you're still concerned or anything new happens, please go back to your doctor and seek his professional opinion.
Jackirius Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 My best mate recently had it, just keep taking the meds and wait. His took a few weeks to heal fully and now can't hear any different to before it happened. Wouldn't worry too much.
Corky Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I had one when I was six, hasn't affected my hearing so it might not last for too long.
AoWW Posted 30 November 2011 Posted 30 November 2011 I had one when I was six, hasn't affected my hearing so it might not last for too long. Apart from it being selective, that is.
Ashley Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 I had this a few years back had about two weeks off school with it. I suffer with Asthma and I had a chest infection, blocked nose. Mucus coming up I was that bad that the fluid eventually escaped through my ear and perforated my ear drum. When it perforated I can remember saying to my nan and granddad whilst they were looking after me can you hear that water running? Well that was the stuff coming out my ear the pain was horrible. After a few days I did have blood start coming out my ear though which I woke up to my mum and dad panicing. My mum and dad took me to A+E to get checked over and I got told it was 'a side affect' however if it kept bleeding to go back. My hearings still perfect though, hope you get better soon mate.
Bluefoxtim Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 A few years ago my sister stuck a cotton bud in her ear and then for some reason forgot it was there and put the side of her head down onto her pillow. Ouch.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 It's horrible being hard of hearing. My right ear is pretty much useless, especially when people are talking quietly. Find it very hard to pick up conversations that aren't directed at me, which OS pretty shit as I'm only 25!
Socks Posted 1 December 2011 Author Posted 1 December 2011 Thanks for all your experienxes and comments guys! The quack gave me antibiotics, coedine and naradex? Napradex? So today I feel as high as a kite and all warm and fluffy and not in pain! But still can't hear and got a constant ringing in it! Was that battered even found myself watching true movies in a trance... Wtf!
Corky Posted 1 December 2011 Posted 1 December 2011 Apart from it being selective, that is. That's deliberately not listening
