Mattock Hunts Foxes

by Neil Weld

Joe Mattock hopes he can silence the Leicester boo-boys on Saturday.

Pompey travel to the King Power Stadium on New Year’s Eve looking to recover from their loss at Millwall on Boxing Day.

Former Foxes full-back Mattock is sure to get a mixed reception – just as he did when the sides met at Fratton Park in November.

Some Leicester fans are still unhappy about the manner in which he left to join West Brom in the summer of 2009.

But Mattock is determined not to let that affect him as he tries to help Pompey recover from their first defeat in five matches.

“It’s a special game,” said the 21-year-old. “The first match I played here was against Leicester and they were booing me like mad. But I’m still looking forward to the game on Saturday.

“I didn’t leave on the best terms, but time moves on. I don’t expect them not to boo me, but it used to be a lot worse than I get now!

“We’ve got to pick ourselves up after the Millwall game and move on. I thought we played well and coped with any pressure – then we conceded the goal near the end.

“But considering the way we played, I think we can quickly move on and pick up some more positive results.

“It will be difficult against Leicester, however. I watched them at the start of the season and they had a whole new team. It’s difficult to get that bond straight away, but it wouldn’t be a shock if they found some consistency in the next couple of months.

“They’re good out wide, so it will be a tough task for me defensively. I’ll have to stay tight to my wing, I suppose.”

Pompey’s victory at Burnley earlier this month is the only time they have won on their travels all season.

Only bottom club Coventry have scored fewer than the seven away goals netted by the Blues, but Mattock insists that the squad have been striving to improve that statistic.

He said: “We’re working hard in training and doing attacking sessions, so it will come.”

Mattock’s loan from West Brom expires after the Fratton clash with Watford on Monday, but the defender is keen to extend his stay.

“I’m not too sure what’s going to happen at the moment,” he said. “But I’d like to stay here until the end of the season. I’m really settled and enjoying playing, training and being around the lads.

“It’s good to get games again. I went quite a long time just playing reserve games, so coming here and getting some more experience has been great.”

Mattock may be a jerk, but he's no Dennis Wise.

Let's retain some perspective here. At least Pearson got a decent price for him from West Brom.

Indeed, he was a disloyal, arrogant cvnt but he never tried to put us against the wall the way Wise did.

Agree with accessory.

We got a decent price for a player who's turned out to be a bit of a pup, no way would the lad get in ahead of Konchesky these days.

A willy puller without a doubt though.

Dennis Wise has never hit a woman.

Yeah, it’s not as if Mattock assaulted two women in a nightclub (along with two men).

If Mattock thinks we’re tough out wide then he’s clearly a bit dim.

There is even a picture of him on the Leicester v Pompey picture special from today on the website.

A single pic with him on his own aswell, whoever decided on that to be put up deserves the sack.
