Knightonian Posted 27 July 2012 Posted 27 July 2012 We had the perfect attack in 2005, Harmison, Hoggard, Jones, Flintoff, Giles, Even though Giles was probably in it for has batting as much as his bowling, and Flintoff despite being awesome, was never that good with the bat in tests, but we had real balance to that side. We what are really lacking is a quality all rounder or a world class number 6, the problem is this series is not one to experiment, so it has to be Morgan or Finn in for Bopara, our biggest problem in the first test was we didn't get the buggers out, Morgan is not going to help us do that, Finn will. Prior is the number 1 wicket keeper batsman in the world, Broad, Bresnan and Swann are all in the top 10 all rounder rankings, we can still bat down to 9, Finn in at 10, who can score runs, and then Jimmy. That is a pretty healthy batting line up, it may also help the top 5 to concentrate and not give away their wickets. It was an awful attack by our current standards. The same attack that lost 5-0 in Australia. We are so much better now than then. The last time we played 5 bowlers in England I believe we were beaten by an Innings. Sharapnel I think you are close to becoming my favourite poster on here, but why should we change a winning formula? One freak test where South Africa had better batting conditions for two days. Scored 600 runs for two? It's not gonna happen again. We should have bowled first in difficult conditions - they batted on a flat Oval pitch with the sun out. When the ball starts swinging and reverse swinging - (in the next Test).... we will win 2-1, I assure you.

The difference between 2005 and the ashes in 06 was Jones, he could get the old ball reversing around like crazy, Bresnan and Anderson can reverse it but nothing like Jones he was phenomenal in that series. We also don't have any one with the hostility that Harmison (on his day) and Flintoff could produce, Finn is the closest to that of bowlers we have available. Hoggard was your line and length consistency bowler and Giles was a triumph of attitude over ability. Flintoff, Jones and Harmison at their best would walk into the current team. I hope you are right about us winning 2-1 especially in the next test as I will be there, but we seem to have lost our cutting edge in our bowling attack in the last 2 tests, I think we will see at least one change, and that is Bopara out for Morgan or Finn, if we go for Morgan I would be tempted to bring Finn in for Bresnan too.
marko Posted 29 July 2012 Posted 29 July 2012 Taylor called up for Bopara http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/19035317
Knightonian Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Happy 30th Birthday to James Anderson .... (and me)
Corky Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 He was thrown in too early, and since has developed into a quality bowler. Hopefully he'll be around for a few years yet.
NiftyFox Posted 1 August 2012 Posted 1 August 2012 New song for tomorrw (if he makes it) OHHH JIMMY JIMMY...JIMMY JIMMY TAYLOR. Anderson has had his time with that song.
Guest MattP Posted 1 August 2012 Posted 1 August 2012 Big chance this weekend, should get far more purchase out of this pitch and we can get them 3-4 down their batsman have had no time whatsoever out in the middle against decent bowlers. Good news is batsman who make a 300 very rarely go past 50 in the next innings, Amla and Kallis the key, Anderson and Finn massive for us assuming Finn starts.
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Blimey, shock line-up for England, Swann out Tayor and Finn in, I'm guessing it's not looking like a turning pitch, and Swann was pretty ineffective against South Africa on a turning pitch. Are we going to use Trott, KP and Taylor to throw down a few overs, at least we are bowling first, so won't miss Swann on a 5 day old pitch, but still, I'm shocked, lets hope it pays off.

I think we neded to do something, I just couldnt see how the same lineup would win a test against SA...that said I can't see this one winning either, SA looked immense...I'm hoping they somehow under perform.
Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Swann is a shocker, might not be a bad move though, the Saffers played him very easily in the last Test, very pleased for Titch and sure he'll go well. This morning is massive, the ball will do a bit and we have to take wickets, get into these batsman who have missed out on a bit of playing due to Kallis and Amla's brilliance.

Every chance, this South Africa side is inconsistent and they rarely string two superb performances together. Though I admit watching the first test I was struggling to fathom how this lot only drew with the Aussies and only just squeezed past New Zealand, hopefully we'll see why in the next 5 days.
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Swann apparently been suffering elbow problems, don't know if this is forced or tactical, if he is injured then I guess we had already picked the squad so it was the only option, if it is tactical then it's good we are bowling first, if Finn gets a hatful, then it will be a tough call for the next test, but headingly should offer him a lot. Interesting to see who gets the new ball, I would choose Finn over Broad.

Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Utter dross being thrown down here so far.......
marko Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Why didn't he call dead ball before? Poor, poor umpiring!
Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Why didn't he call dead ball before? Poor, poor umpiring! Ridiculous, lets 3 or 4 go without even having a word and then calls it as soon as Smith is out. Need to demand an explanation on that.
Corky Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 That's my issue. Two balls before Petersen wasn't "distracted" when he pulled Finn for three. Both umpires now have to call dead ball every time Finn knocks the stumps over. I've no problem if they had done it from the start, but they hadn't.
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 According to BBC, the ball was called dead before Smith hit it, and the umpire was within his rights to do so: The Sun's John Etheridge: "The Aussies - and David Warner in particular - were complaining about being distracted by Finn kicking stumps during the ODIs. Laws of cricket show Steve Davis' interpretation to be fair enough.Hope Finn is not now thinking more about his knee than where to land ball." BBC Sport's Mark Mitchener "Law 23.4 (b) (vi) states that "either umpire shall call and signal dead ball when the striker is distracted by any noise or movement or in any other way while he is preparing to receive, or receiving a delivery. This shall apply whether the source of the distraction is within the game or outside it."
Corky Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Which is fine, but why didn't they do it from the first time it happened in the game? You reckon the batsman will be happy when it's called dead ball after a flowing drive for four?
Guest MattP Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 No problem with it being called but you can't let three or four go then decide just to call one as dead because the batsman is out. Think we'd like the toss back?
