Corky Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Why don't we put a third man in? Leak so many runs down there.
Captain... Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Anyone else see Strauss and his sunglasses stunt? Brilliant. Highlight of today's play He couldn't that again if he tried.
purpleronnie Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 OK South Africa this is just getting silly. Stop it.
Corky Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 This is just boring* England are not trying to take wickets, just going through the motions. *I do get bored sometimes watching England take an age to rack up massive scores. Much prefer series like the West Indies one.
purpleronnie Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 Not looking good now....SA just bowling so much better than england, as beefy said our bowlers seem to lose the plot, SA are so focused.
purpleronnie Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 Be a massive ask to save it now, SA look every bit the best in the world.

Guest MattP Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 Very poor today, bowling was completely lifeless and some shocking concentration errors in the batting. Got it all to do to escape this one with a draw, the pitch is still decent so if we can get a partnership going it's possible.

To even stand a chance we need Bell and Bopara to make it through to and see of the second new ball, but I wouldn't put any money on it, can't believe how ineffective our bowling attack has been.
Corky Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 7 down and still behind, little chance of saving the match.
Guest MattP Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Shame a s Prior and Bell did a good job before Lunch, need ti bounce back in the second test.

I'll be there cheering the lads on, well from Saturday onwards, hoping for a better performance all round, too many wickets given away, and the bowling was not aggressive enough we tried to pressure them into making a mistake, but they just didn't, to bowl that many overs and only take one wicket is just criminal. Interesting stat on the bbc, average score of our number 6 in 2012 is 13, Steve Finn's international average, 14, get him in, a bit of extra height and aggression, especially at headingly cannot be a bad thing, it will also keep Bresnan and Broad fresh for the extra batting they are normally required to do anyway.
Guest MattP Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Cannot disagree at all, play five bowlers, pitch at Headingley should be perfect for a bowler like Finn as well. Only positive we can take from this test is no one batting below 5 for South Africa had a chance to get in nick before Leeds.
Corky Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 South Africa are a top side, who enjoy playing over here. Get Finn in and play five specialist bowlers.
Super_horns Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Ouch...bit of a hammering for our lads. We were too complacent after day one or the South Africans just too good?
Milton Keynes Fox Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 It can only get better in the second test, really need to replace finn for bopara (he just doesn't do tests)
Knightonian Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 I don't agree with changing the way we play. 4 bowlers has generally worked for us well in recent years. Pietersen, Trott and Bopara can bowl overs. A 5th bowler usually does very little bowling anyway. I would suggest we bring Finn in for Bresnan.

I don't see the point of dropping a proper bowler who generally scores than the current number six so that number six can stay in as a part time bowler. Bopara made another 0 tonight for Essex, looks like his head has gone again, that shot on Monday was unforgivable (playing at it was bad enough, let alone the execution) and if they take Bresnan out and leave him in we have got it so so wrong.

If we are playing 4 bowlers, their ability to bat should not matter. That's the whole point of playing four bowlers. They do the bowling, the batsmen do the batting. Bresnen though a decent bowler is not good enough and is only in the side because he can occassionally bat. If we are going to play 4 bowlers (which I agree with) we should not be worried about their batting. We have 7 other people who are supposed to do the batting. In all this Broad can quite easily bat at 8 and Swann 9. If (and I agree with you here) we change the batting line up, I want James Taylor at number 6.

We had the perfect attack in 2005, Harmison, Hoggard, Jones, Flintoff, Giles, Even though Giles was probably in it for has batting as much as his bowling, and Flintoff despite being awesome, was never that good with the bat in tests, but we had real balance to that side. We what are really lacking is a quality all rounder or a world class number 6, the problem is this series is not one to experiment, so it has to be Morgan or Finn in for Bopara, our biggest problem in the first test was we didn't get the buggers out, Morgan is not going to help us do that, Finn will. Prior is the number 1 wicket keeper batsman in the world, Broad, Bresnan and Swann are all in the top 10 all rounder rankings, we can still bat down to 9, Finn in at 10, who can score runs, and then Jimmy. That is a pretty healthy batting line up, it may also help the top 5 to concentrate and not give away their wickets.
