leicsmac Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 Good grief...Prior goes for a suicidal single and nearly runs Bell out. English batsmen seem to be hitting this right now...
Guest MattP Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 Well quelle fcuking surprise Bopara gets back into the test side and he found wanting again. Our selectors really do some daft things among the great, he's had ample chances. Like Panesar syndrome in the UAE and Sri Lanka. We had a team that was really working with Morgan at six, there was never a need to change it for Bairstow or Bopara.
Corky Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 Bopara did really well in the ODI's, but he's not up to Test cricket. Steyn was on top form this morning.

He did well in the last ODI, but unless he can consistently back it up, his place in the side will be rightly questioned.

Guest MattP Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 Probably got enough on the board to make sure we won't lose the match now, ball is swinging about a bit, lets hope our bowlers can hit their straps early.
purpleronnie Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 if we dont get 400 its a pretty terrible considering...at least its swinging and swann should turn it.. edit: we didn't. Last 8 wickets = 134 runs. Just hope the bowlers perform.

The way the balled moved about this morning South Africa could be in a for a tough time. On a seperate point, would any other side in the world have someone like Stephen Finn as a reserve?

I do like Bresnan but I can't help but think he's in on his batting. Finn is a quality bowler who, with improved batting, would be in the side.
brockmyster Posted 20 July 2012 Posted 20 July 2012 There wasn't much in the pitch for any of the bowlers, it is Ironic that the weak link in the pace attack took the most wickets, Vernon looked decent, but I don't understand why he opened the bowling ahead of Steyn, bizarre decision from Smith a fiery opening salvo from the best bowler in the world especially after the loss of Strauss could have got them another quick breakthrough and put pressure on the batsmen, but I get the impression that Philander will take most of his wickets when batsmen are chasing the game and looking to score, Cook and Trott have the patience to see him out and pick off the bad balls. Imo Morkel is far from the weak link, only bowler out of them all in the first innings, what i saw of it, who was consistant and caused a few problems

I think his batting helps but only once have we not taken 20 wickets when he was in the side and that was because of the rain, so we are clearly not sacrificing any bowling for his batting, but I would love to see Finn in for Bopara in the next match, depends how this one goes, but we have enough batting in Prior, Brensan, Broad and Swann to make up for the runs the number 6 normally gets (which recently has been fvck all) and I think it would scare the shit out of any batting line up.

I think you are right, Finn should be in the side, it's as simple as that, he's too good not to be. You could even push Prior up to six and have Broad and Bresnan batting 7 and 8 imo. Imagine that as a bowling attack with short bursts from Broad, Finn and Bresnan all day after the new ball.

Bresnan does a job for the team, no doubt, but Finn is a better bowler so it must be the all-round package that gets him in the side.
purpleronnie Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Not looking good, SA look much stronger than any side weve played for a while.
Corky Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 They haven't lost a series away in six years. Quality outfit,.

Captain... Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Not looking good, SA look much stronger than any side weve played for a while. I can see this being a draw, SA are scoring very slowly and good spell with the new ball, or a breakthrough with Swann and we could easily finish with a first innings lead. If they want to post a winning total in the first innings then they will have to bat through until tea tomorrow but without a quality spinner they will not be able to rip through us on the final day.
Guest MattP Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Draw looking likely. Surprised at Strausses fields today, very negative, no interest in inticing a drive. Poorest we have Bowled for a while, Finn is now a must for the 2nd test.

Poorest we have Bowled for a while, Finn is now a must for the 2nd test. Think our only hope of winning now is if we can get 3/4 cheaply with the new ball, which alas, looks unlikely.

Yes looked like a draw as early as the 2nd day...barring a complete england collaspe that is.
marko Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 What a terrible review that was - pitched outside leg, inside edge and probably going over. Considering how good Strauss normally is with DRS, that review smacked of desperation.
marko Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 Anyone else see Strauss and his sunglasses stunt? Brilliant.
Super_horns Posted 21 July 2012 Posted 21 July 2012 HM...letting the South Africans take control too easily.
