Guest Col city fan Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 The thing is Finnegan, paki and wog is used maliciously. There's no denying that whatsoever. To my uneducated mind 'chinky' is different. As is calling someone a jock or paddy. Some find it offensive, others don't. As for bilo on about 'ragheads' its an old argument, one he knows nothing about and something I can't be bothered going into again. As usual with such terms, find out about its historical roots. It's dead easy to do.. Do a bit of research... And you'll discover that the chinese DO find the term offensive. One connotation relates 'chink' to 'slinty eyes'. And people have been given the boot for using the term, only this year in fact. I could go on but there's no real need. Do a bit of reading Stu.. Find out stuff before you assume.
Lobsterboyuk Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 To be fair I cant say I have. But the point im making is he didnt mean anything by it and its really not that bad. Yes I agree there are better words but is there need for such a slating by people who then go on to abuse coalville? Really? Pot Kettle Black. This
Finnegan Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 This No not this, not this at all. A light hearted bit of banter about coalville is massively different to using a racial slur that puts down an entire ethnicity. The fact it was used in ignorance may make Stu a little more naive and slightly dim than completely prejudiced but the term itself is still racist and offensive and if you're going to persist in using it after that's explained to you then you're still a ****. I'm all for bah bah black sheep, I definitely want my tea black and I'm happy with dark chocolate - political correctness CAN go too far. But objecting to words which have only ever existed TO be offensive is just common ****ing decency.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Stop ****ing moaning you bunch of women. Back to the support, the bloke who brought along the blow up dolls is a legend!

Some people seem to just like to argue on here don't they... and this time, it isn't even anything relevant to the team! Take it to the 'General Chat' section or something, tired of seeing talk about a 'chink' stretched out over a few pages when it could have been resolved in one or two posts.

Guest Col city fan Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Could have been resolved in zero posts if people weren't living in 50's... ? If people WERE living in the 50's it wouldn't have even been an issue.. We ain't, it's 2012 Though I do agree this could be discussed in the general section
RonnieTodger Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Exactly. Not being disrespectful. It's nothing like calling someone a wog or paki. Not to me anyway. I'm truly amazed some people are bothered by this. None of them are Chinese mind. Ahem. Only a quarter and I'm not at all offended, as I have little to do with China. It' just surprising that as many people don't see it as racist. Chink is a word "describing" a Chinese person isn't it? Like Paki does for someone from Pakistan? So why should e.g. an Indian find the term Paki offensive if e.g. a Japanese person shouldn't find Chink offensive? Like I say, I'm not bothered about this and I think a lot of the Chinese stereotypes are funny, like some about other nationalities. But I don't see how it isn't as bad as calling someone a Paki because they have brown skin. Just for future references, I wouldn't openly call someone a Chink from now on, if I were you.
NeilyBoy Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 I can't help but think back to the summer when everyone was on their high horse about the state of the Bristol forum and its racist posters. I'm beginning to get the impression we aren't much better as a group. The volume of unapologetic posts defending the use of an incontrovertibly racist term is just embarrassing. My dad(who is 63) still says "fancy a chinky tonight" and he will often follow it with "i couldnt eat a whole one though". The racist bastard, he needs locking up. No he doesn't but, as obviously tongue in cheek as he's being, he does need somebody to let him know he's somewhat out of touch. You're a bad son if you let him continue to go around thinking it's an ok term to use.

Houdini Logic Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 To be fair no matter how many times I tell my Dad, he still thinks roundabouts consist of one lane. Old people should be banned from driving and banned from talking to people
Simmo86 Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Once called my Chinese mate a gook! He didn't take it too well. Anyway.........our support was top notch on Sunday!
GingerrrFox Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 People use derogatory terms for ginger people and you don't see me complaining therefore in my view if it's ok to call a ginger person copper bollocks, I'm perfectly entitled to use the words paki, wog etc. After all gingers are the biggest minority in this country.

NeilyBoy Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 To be fair no matter how many times I tell my Dad, he still thinks roundabouts consist of one lane. Old people should be banned from driving and banned from talking to people Definitely. My mum told me a story the other day about an old man she was at a get-together with who insisted that the correct way to drive is to barge in-front of people, cutting them up, at the last second before your turn so that you don't have to wait in the queue of cars for that very same turn. When a sane lady pointed out that everybody else had their journey time increased by his 'time-reducing' behaviour his response was "so what? They should do it too." Oh and using supermarkets. Remember those handheld zappers that you used to get in supermarkets before they switched to self-service checkouts - the ones that let you zap each item as you added it to the trolley, massively reducing the time spent at the checkout since the assistant only needed to unregister the zapper and take your money? The one down the road from my parents' house still has them and as I got to the zapper-only checkout I got stuck behind an old couple with a ton of shopping that they hadn't zapped and had to wait as they made the assistant go through all of their shopping doing it for them.

I think the biggest problem in this discussion is that people seem to apply the logic that swear words are only offensive in a certain context to racial slurs as though they are one and the same thing. A racial slur has a historically attached, hateful or bigoted meaning to which a member of the indicated race/religion has every right to take exception to even if the user was ignorant of the offence the word causes - not necessarily to treat the offender as a bad person (if it is a genuine mistake) but to educate them into not accidentally offending other people in the same way. It's a matter of common courtesy - admit you didn't mean any offence, apologise and don't use the word again. Simple. A swear word is just a word that people tend to illogically over react to and which won't make you look ignorant or bigoted in defending the use of (when used in a non-derogatory context anyway).

In my eyes I see no difference between a person saying "that ginger bastard" and "that paki bastard" yet for some reason the majority of people seem to think that one of those comments is completely acceptable and the other is not. There is no difference between the two if you are using the word in a derogatory tone, it doesn't bother me but I know a lot of fellow red heads who take great exception to terms such as that.

No doubt its hurtful, but whats all that crap about it giving you the right to use other derogatory terms yourself? I don't think it works that way.

And they have every right to. It's unacceptable and frankly moronic to use any natural trait as a derogatory term. It doesn't give you the right to turn around and use derogatory terms yourself. That all said and done I'm always making jokes about my Welsh mate fancying sheep. But that's not quite the same thing (I think) because as far as I'm aware, Welsh people don't actually fornicate with ovines and it's always been a tongue-in-cheek term. He hasn't corrected me yet hence me still being of that opinion; if he did ever find it offensive I'd stop doing it.
Finnegan Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Have we ever enslaved, exploited or kept down gingers as an inferior race or sub species? I must have missed that. Mocking ginger people is akin to belittling the ugly or overweight, it isn't nice and probably shouldn't be encouraged but to compare it to overt racism is just pathetically childish and entirely missing the point of why the latter is such an enormous problem.
