I thought he was after Severin but it seems it is O'Brien. :D:D:thumbup:;)

Levein makes move to lure O'Brien south

BARRY ANDERSON

BURTON O'BRIEN will announce a decision on his future within the next week, with Leicester City now favourites to land the out-of-contract Livingston captain.

By repelling the offer of a trial period under George Burley, the new Hearts manager, O'Brien has ignited his bridges with his Tynecastle suitors as Craig Levein waits with open arms in the Midlands.

The creative midfielder has been offered around £3000-a-week to stay as skipper at Almondvale under their new manager, Paul Lambert, but that advance is expected to be spurned in favour of greater remuneration and a grander stage at The Walkers Stadium.

Levein has ushered in a heavy influx from the SPL since moving to Leicester last October, with the latest recruits being the out of contract Celtic players Rab Douglas and Momo Sylla.

He now wants O'Brien to supplement the quota. O'Brien's agent John Seasman said: "Burton wants to play at the highest level possible. There are clubs in Scotland interested, there are clubs down south interested. He will be making a decision in the next week.

"He has not signed anything as yet. It's the next stage of his career, so as a Bosman it's a big decision for him. He has his family life, which he will take into consideration, so he will go where he feels his football is going to develop."

O'Brien endured a counter- productive spell with Blackburn Rovers earlier in his career, but as a more rounded professional he now believes the time could be right to test the water in England once more. Levein has tracked the 24-year-old since his time in Gorgie and believes that capturing the South African-born O'Brien would represent a significant coup from a busy summer of transfer activity.

"We are getting close on a couple of things and if we manage to get the guys that we are looking at then I will be very pleased," said Levein. "We have managed to get a few players into the club so far and we are looking at possibly another three joining us also."

Still nothing certain in that for me.

I can't see why we need another creative midfielder, I'm worried Levein can't see out striker problem.

Joey or williams would go... or both. Mad Biker said a while ago we would listen to offers for williams!

It says 'creative midfielder' but isn't he a winger?

Left side of midfield.... Tiatto at LB?

e said: "I’ve been very impressed with Burton and, given that Scotland need all the good players they can get, I’m surprised he has not been included.

"I don’t believe there’s a better young left-sided midfield player in the country and to me he should definitely be in the under-21s at least.

"Along with our goalkeeper Dave McEwan, I remember Burton being part of a Scotland under-21 squad just after he signed from Blackburn.

"That was when he wasn’t a regular with us but now that he has established himself it must be frustrating to think he is being overlooked. We seem to be looking elsewhere for players and there have even been some pushed after they’ve had one or two good games. Yet here’s a guy playing week in, week out to a high standard right under our noses.

"I think we tend to run our own game down in Scotland and maybe over-rate the football down south and that’s maybe reflected in some of the Scotland squads.

"I don’t know what Burton has to do but he has been our best attacking midfielder this season.

"We’re talking about Burton being left out of the under-21 set-up but I don’t think there’s many players better than him in the country. In terms of left-sided midfielders you only really have the likes of Alan Thompson at Celtic and maybe one or two of the boys at Rangers.

I dont think we really need him, if this rumour is actually true, centre midfield is strong with Williams + Hughes. We also have Sylla, Wilcox, Tiatto, Kisnorbo, Gudjonsson, Moris can play there too.

We desperately need a striker as we only have Connolly, De Vries + Dion.

O really, thanks for that, maybe we could need another midfielder. Is it possible that CL may be trying to offload Gudjonsson this summer? I also feel that Wilcox should of left and bring in a new left-winger.

No i read that interview with wilcox and i think he's going to be a real help for the team, he will be fighting for a place constantly and he has so much experience and along with Dublin, they will help team morale and give younger ones advice and support!

Can't see Joey being good enough for the side as it's shaping up on paper.

I think it depends a lot on where Johansson will play. If O'Brien can play left or centre midfield then it wouldn't be too bad, however, if he was to be on the left then by his nature i'm thinking that side would be the narrow one, with Sylla providing width on the right.

Although he can play at left back, Johansson doesn't strike me as the type to go flying forward down the channel and putting crosses in, which would be what i'd want in our left back should that side be narrow. Tiatto at left back would be capable of that but, like i say, it depends where CL has Johansson playing.

Although I agree with what you say, Levein has shown no willingness to play Tiatto at left-back. Even when Stewart was out of favour, he preferred to shift Maybury across from the right. He talked on the RL phone-in about having one side narrow which is what Tiatto offers. The fact he's given Tiatto the captaincy and played him consistently on the left wing suggests O'Brien would certainly not be first choice on the left side of midfield. However, at the moment it's difficult to tell who will be playing where as we still need at least one more defensive player (either at left-back or centre-back, depending on who is available, whether we sign Gerrbrand and where Levein favours playing Johansson).

As you are aware, someone I know gets to hear about certain bits of info and O'Brien has been seen where he works.

Take note, that he told me CKR was a done deal and he wasn't so it's not a dead cert.

I imagine Levein sees O'Brien as a player to play behind the strikers and with us already having Connolly, MDV and Dublin he might want something different in a player who plays deep and has pace to unlock defences??

I'd be happy with O'Brien, he's extremely skillfull.

Oh yeah i agree, i wasn't saying Tiatto will play at left back, just that he has played there and can if need be. I don't think Levein will though, and is probably more likely to do the Maybury to left back, Stearman at right change again.

O'Brien's arrival will depend, apart from what's been said about where Johansson etc play, on what the plan is for Wilcox. Personally now he's staying i'd just want to see Wilcox helping out the youngsters and only playing if things get desperate, he'll be gone next summer and is it worth missing out on a talent such as O'Brien because we've got an injury plagued 30 something as cover for this year? I'd say no, on a free transfer and a low wage i'd rather see us get O'Brien.
