Ex-Italy under-21 footballer Piermario Morosini has collapsed on the pitch and has had a suspected heart attack.

The midfielder was playing for Livorno in the Serie B match at Pescara when he fell to the ground in the 31st minute.

A defibrillator was used on the pitch and Morosini, 25, was taken to hospital. The game was called off with other players in tears.

Last month Bolton's Fabrice Muamba was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in an FA Cup tie.

The 24-year-old is now making "strong and steady improvements".

Morosini is on loan to Livorno from the Serie A club Udinese.

He collapsed face down and appeared to be in convulsion. The referee's assistant drew the referee's attention and he stopped the game.

The Ansa news agency said Morosini had suffered a heart attack in the ambulance.

He has been taken to Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital.

Let's hope he can pull through like Muamba.

RIP. Awful news.

I hope we have a minute's silence before our next game for Morosini. I was quite surprised at how much international support there was for Muamba so I'd like to think we show our respect to his family.

One would hope. Terrible waste.

there are rumors going about that the ambulance entrance was blocked by a park car. :(

this is when everything needs to be put in perspective with regards our result today....its not that big a deal.

I heard on Late Kick Off a few weeks ago from an ex-footballer (can't remember who it was) but they said that apart from the initial medical when they first join the club, they never had any annual check ups or anything like that.

If that is the case then it doesn't surprise me that stuff like this happens without any warning.

Fantastic gesture from Udinese and Di Natale...

Udinese have confirmed they will look after Piermario Morosini’s sister, who relied on the player for financial and emotional support.

Morosini was under contract with Udinese and on loan at Livorno when he died during Saturday’s Serie B game with Pescara.

The 25-year-old had a very difficult life, as he lost both his parents before turning 18 and his disabled brother committed suicide.

The only remaining family member is his sister, who is also gravely ill and relied upon him for financial support.

Udinese and captain Antonio Di Natale have now confirmed they will ensure Morosini’s sister is looked after.

“He was an exceptional lad, so full of life. Despite all the problems he had, he was always at the disposal of the team and every day gave us all strength,” said Di Natale.

“I lost my mother four years ago and, as he had already been through this, he was very close to me. Watching the images on television was shocking. He wanted to get back up, but fell again. When seeing that, all you can do is pray the Lord will give you a hand.

“He wanted so much to live and find success, for himself, for the family he no longer had and his sister. I immediately said we could not play last night, as it wasn’t right. I compliment Inter and the FIGC for making that decision, as on a day like this football becomes impossible.”

Livorno and his girlfriend Anna released a statement thanking “all those who in these hours of pain have been close to us in their memories of a great athlete and a special person.”
