Premier League - Norwich call police on teen fan for kit leak

Norwich City called the police after a 17-year-old fan leaked the club's new kit 12 hours before its official unveiling.

IT student Chris Brown obtained the pictures from the club's official website as it was being updated and published them on Twitter and internet forums. Brown did not hack the website but rather was able to take the pictures from a page that was being worked on. The season ticket holder said he was sorry for upsetting his favourite football team. "I'm sorry for any offence I might have caused to the club, but I would never do anything malicious or spiteful because I do have an interest and love the football club," Brown told the BBC. Norwich phoned Brown at 04:30 on Wednesday morning asking him how he obtained the pictures before informing the police.

"I feel Norwich could have handled it better," said Chris's mother Trish. "I feel they could have spoken to Chris and myself... and just discussed why he'd done it, asked him a few more questions, before involving the police. "He knows he's probably done wrong by taking it a bit further, but that was just excitement to show other people what he had done."

Norfolk Police said in a statement: "We can confirm we are making inquiries into a reported electronic security breach. A 17-year-old boy is assisting us with our inquiries."

The club's chief executive David McNally explained why the club involved the police.

"We are the guardians of the football club whilst we're here and so we will protect our property," he said. "Our property in the digital age involves our intellectual property, so we won't allow anybody to come in and take it from us."

McNally also defended the club's decision to launch a new shirt after using their current jersey for just one season. "Let me tell you, big football clubs change their kit every year. If we are a big football club then we have to act like a big football club," he said. "If we don't, we are at a competitive disadvantage to other big football clubs and the vast majority of supporters prefer the kit to change every year."

That David McNally sounds like a right bellend.

If LCFC treated me like that after I'd spent money watching shite for years I'd tell them where to stick it.

The club put the photos into the public domain early by mistake, I'd have told them and the police to jog on and come back when they had found some wrongdoing.

I bet this boy loves his mum getting involved... shame!

I'm sorry but what has he done wrong? If they didn't want them copy and pasting then they should block that option, Ok if it was under construction then why didn't they take the website down? If I was the lad I would tell them where to stick there season ticket for next season. Norwich should sack their web site designer before they go chasing this lad!

Norwich City has apologised for the way it dealt with a teenage fan who leaked pictures online of their new football kit before its official launch.

Police had been called in to investigate 17-year-old IT student Chris Brown, from Norwich, but the matter has been dropped.

The club said it now believed Chris had posted the images through "enthusiasm" rather than "malicious intent".

Makes you wonder if the press hadn't got hold of the story would they be apologising?

I don't get why the police got involved, seems Norwich cocked up by making images of their new strip available to the public before they intended to. Thats what really worries me, we are turning into a police state.

No, Its just a business worrying about its property.

Dont go all New World Order about tiny little things.

Yes its abit OTT, but this is just what happens nowadays

Because the cvnt of a General Manager called them and reported the theft of intellectual property.

He then went on television to state that Naaaarch would fight to protect its...(and it is at this point during the interview you could see his face drop as he realised what an utter twat he was making of himself).

Norwich acting the big time charlies once again.

Used to quite like them but they have been treating everyone poorly in the way of ticket prices, etc. The FA cup allocation was a joke too.

You think they wouldn't? First hand I can tell you they would (though I wasn't quite arrested and I didn't leak a kit)
