Wolves relegated Molineux development placed on hold

I always keep an eye on what Wolves are doing as a couple of my best mates are Wolves fans, so today now that Wolves are relegated to the Championship I have heard their stadium redevelopment will now be postponed indefinitely. Now I dunno what anyone else thinks but to me it seems like it was a bit of an odd plan to redevelop Molineux in the first place? They were never going to need a big increase in capacity and have been flirting with relegation since they were promoted and now as they are already 1/3 into the development the ground looks quite odd and attendances are likely to go down now anyway?

I had a quick read on the Wolves forum and a few guys on there didn't seem to happy either as they would much prefer the development to continue whilst they are in the Championship so at least if they do regain promotion it could be nearly complete or completed. I'm sure financial reasons are what will be putting it on hold but if money was going to be a problem why make such long term plans based on Wolves continuing to play Premiership football? You don't need to be a genius to work out Wolves were going to struggle to stay in the Premiership the next 5 years and now they have a ground they probably won't fill in the Championship and will looks worse than what it did before?

Anyone else agree or is it just me who has these strange thoughts? lol

I don't blame them for redeveloping the stand. I have no idea what their average attendances are but surely they wouldn't do it unless it was needed? Plans were probably drawn up a year or 2 ago. Least they only did a small stand to being with, I imagine they did that incase relegation happend. Doubt they'll fill the ground next year, but if they bounce right back up again, it might not be too costly,.

That being said from the way they've dealt with the manager situation it don't look as if they have much of a clue how to run a football club.

My best mate a few years ago was a Wolves fan, and we used to go to a lot of Leicester v Wolves/Wolves v Leicester fixtures. He said they had been talking about expanding the stadium for a while, and had considered all sorts, including excavating the pitch entirely, to make it slightly smaller and lower down so they could put more seats in front and below the current front rows, and make these new front rows closer to the edge of the pitch. We sat in a makeshift stand in one of the corners at Molineux once. Don't know if that's still there.

I can't see why they didn't just fill the corners of the stadium in properly. They could have done just one each season, to lessen the risk of expanding too much at once if they found themselves back in the Championship with lower attendances.

They have always seemed to be a club with odd ideas, the whole manager situation at present is just clueless. Their old wonky pitch annoyed me, I'm a little ocd with these things!

lol I think that's due to the shape of the stands. It's a hexagonal stadium, which I'm sure is what their club badge is based on. If we're being OCD, the pitch is fine, it's the two biggest stands that are wonky.

I agree, their managerial situation is a farce. I'd be livid if I was a Wolves fan. Thankfully, I'm not one.

Yeah you are definitely right about it being because of stands I didn't realise that was because of the shape of their badge though what a stupid idea that would be!? Imagine the jokes if the Walkers/KP Stadium was round to match our badge

Bloke on bbc 606 just said that 1 stand cost 16 mil (Dunno if hes right), saying 16 mil should have been spent on the team first. He has a point. Didn't realise that 1 stand would be so much.

It should have been spent on the team if that is the price. I didn't even think Molinuex sold out every week anyway, maybe for games against Manchester City, Arsenal and West Brom, but I can't imagine the place full against the likes of Bolton, Swansea and Blackburn.

What was he trying to do, inherit fans from West Brom, Birmingham and Villa?

Estimated costs for the opposite stand now £18 Million too so unless they secure Premiership football they are £16,000 000 down probably won't sell out in the Championship and their ground will look like this when completed end of the season

Sacking Mick McCarthy was the biggest ever mistake

It wasn't.

He had to go, but they needed to do better than go for his assistant.

Wonder if the owners have ties/mates in the construction industry. The caller also said the owners were building houses on the training ground and in an other location. Thats crazy money I wasn't sure if the caller was wrong but I guess not.

So this stand is not to be completed?

Yeah that 1 will be finished but the other 2 to the right that were due to be knocked down and developed to match will not be now

To be fair their average gate is close to their capacity so I can understand expanding especially if they could have secured long term premiership status which should always be the ambition. However, surely the finances to do so should take in the possibility of a return to the championship and be in place prior to starting thedevelopement.

Wish we'd do that with our stadium

That sounds alright to me, I think it will look good if they just finished that one and left the rest the same. If they were all matching stands it wouldn't look as good IMO.

It is - Sky showed it this afternoon, although there weren't many fans sitting in it.

Those that were still there at the end of the game, which saw a hailstorm over the ground, looked like half-drowned rats! lol

Better still, imagine it was the shape of the (original) stadium sponsor... .. mmm Giant crisp and a crinkle cut pitch :):P

lol We could have a colosseum! When it's not a matchday, we could gain extra revenue from throwing Christians to the lions.

I'm pretty sure Wolves' club badge is based on Molineux, and not the other way around. The hexagon shaped stands at Molineux are older than their current badge.
