dannyjpage Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 I take it the FA are continuing with only allowing 5 substitutes in the Championship next season and still allowing 7 in the Premiership and Cup competitions. I really do feel strongly this is a rediculous decision The major problem is that it's stopping young players breaking into the first team especially English players and therefore effecting the National Team in the future. I can think of lots of negatives with this decision but no positives. If anyone can come up with a plus point to only having 5 subs, i'd love to hear them.
chris_lcfc_85 Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 I'd agree fully, 7 subs needs to return. The FA clearly had too much time on their hands to sit down and come up with a decision of 5 subs!
ta-fc Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 I guess the intention is for Championship teams to require smaller squads thus forcing them to manage the finances better! I'm also guessing that the doesnt apply to the Prem or cup competitions due to they feel we have no chance of winning either? ;-)
Captain... Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 We also need a decent reserve competition, to get rid of the transfer windows and scrap this elite academy nonsense. We really do seem determined to shoot ourselves in the foot when it comes to nurturing young English talent.
m00nie Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 it was done on a poll at teh KP stadum so more clubs must have voted for it than against it so not really the FA fault is it..
Guest NGoloMode Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Some teams can't get 7 players to put on the bench.
Guesty Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Some teams can't get 7 players to put on the bench. Surely every team can stick youngsters on there. Even if they have no intention of really playing them it's good experience.
cc_star Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 It's disappointing on one front, eg. Yes, it really can limit the matchday experience of young players On the flip-side it hinders the influence of the limited number of clubs with serious money, such as those relegated from the Prem with strong squads a big fat parachute cheque. If we had owners who weren't throwing around future year's revenue like confetti then we'd probably think it was a step in the right direction of adding balance
Captain... Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Some teams can't get 7 players to put on the bench. I don't believe that any club could be at such a point where they couldn't stick a couple of youth players on the bench, I am pretty sure every club in the championship has an academy (untile elite academies wipe them all out). What it is, is clubs seeing it as an advantage to the bigger clubs with bigger squads that they can field 7 experienced professionals on the bench when they can only field youth team players to make up the numbers. So have voted to stunt the growth of young players to give them a miniscule advantage over teams with bigger squads. Why couldn't we have 5 subs from the first team squad and 2 academy players, so nobody has an advantage and the young players get to experience the first team atmosphere and will get a few run outs, and maybe even break into the team.

Exactly my thoughts. Just to clarify, my thoughts would not change if we didnt have strong investment from our owners. Even this Saturday didnt a championship team have to play an outfield player in goal as they had no substitute goalkeeper?
Grewks Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Why not have a rule saying that clubs can list 7 players, but 2 must be produced by the clubs academy. Allows for the progression of youngsters in our country, aswell as solving the problems with clubs who can only name 5 subs, as they do not have to list 7.

Don't the youth have to sign professional terms to appear? (I really don't know) I'm sure even us didn't field a full bench on a couple of occasions

glenny_fox Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 I honestly think, to a certain extent, switching from 7 subs to 5 subs is part of the reason Sven was doomed to fail this season.
Grewks Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Great Idea Captain Shrapnel Damn....he beat me to it

(I really don't know) I'm sure even us didn't field a full bench on a couple of occasions No I don't think they do. You're right we didn't, I think it could of been in the league cup. Maybe the youngsters weren't allowed to appear on a school night
LCFC_FAN_1995 Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 It would be good to bring back the 7 subs, but to get some youth players involved because apparently that's what this was about, you have the normal 5 subs and if you can, you are allowed to have 2 more subs which must be U21
hbkkids Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 7 subs are needed. Otherwise players like Moore and Hopper won't get a look in.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 I thought it had been changed back to 7 for next season?

This I agree with would love to see players like hopper and Harry on the bench more and mabye even more academy prospects.

As much as I am for that, the argument could be that by having those players on the bench it takes them away from the academy, which I think, but not completely sure, play their games on a Saturday. Say you had Hopper on the bench every game, he'd be missing out on match experience with the academy, which is important to a players progression. You can't exactly select two different academy players each game to fill the bench either. I'm aware that the five substitute rule probably does more harm than good to the progression of players, they're just a few views that I can see which would oppose that idea.

The amount of games we have actually played on a Saturday at 3 this seasons means they wouldn't miss that many games. I don't see why you couldn't rotate the academy players, you give the older lads in the academy a chance to feel what it is like in the first team squad and the younger lads in the academy a chance to play. I am sure that it could be scheduled so that if they didn't play they would be able to join up with the academy and play for them if necessary. I would also dearly love to see us play in the reserve league next season, I think this has harmed our club more than anything else in the last few seasons. 20 extra games a season to give players time to find/maintain fitness try out the academy lads, or even try out new formations and partnerships, give players who are not in the starting line-up a chance to prove themselves and catch the eye. We want the Ressies!!!

It's nothing to do with the FA, it's the FL who through their member clubs have voted for this. I know people have a poor view of the FA but they do get blamed for things that are nothing to do with them.
C.J Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Five Is stupid, I think they did it to make clubs like Portsmouth feel better.
