Christoph Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Would you be happy for cars to do that? Obviously slow down, but if it is safe and clear to go when on a red light why not? Theres a massive diffence between a bike and a car going through a red light. A bike doesn't weigh over a ton and can go over 40 mph past a red light. If I cycle through a red light, it's only myself i'm risking, but if a car drivers through a red light, he's risking others around him. So it's completly different imo. I'm not going to wait at the red light if i'm on the road and there aren't any people crossing am I? Fair enough, going through a red light past a busy junction might be a bit dangerous but I think there are times when going through a red light is harmless.

If your argument is that when it is completely safe to go through it then that is ok, why can't cars do it, if it is completely safe? The size and weight of the vehicle in question is irrelevant, if it is safe then there is no accident, then there are no worries. This is not a criticism of cyclists, just wondering how you would feel if cars did the same thing.
Finnegan Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Just bought a place on the new Charles church estate near the red lion. I lived in Anstey till the age of 16, then Syston till 25 and now Rothley. Went to Longslade and am very familiar with area and the people around here. U local finners? You were probably the year below me at Longslade, I lived on Hallfields Lane until I went to uni. Not local anymore, I live off Narborough Road these days.
simmo1977 Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 SystonFox, the carvery at the Red Lion is superb and a bargain at £4.95 before 7pm, I live in Goscote so only a short drive to go there. This whole Red light thing, I think if as a cyclist you want to be treated equally with cars you should abide by the same rules as cars, I always stop at red lights and yes sometimes it's a pain in the arse when you've built up some momentum and then have to stop but I'd rather do that than go through a red light and either get knocked off my bike or be called all the names under the sun by a motorist. I cycle over 100 miles a week in rush hour traffic all on the roads and have no problems with cars getting too close overtaking at all.
Daggers Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I think your attitude stinks, your exactly the type of "look at me I'm saving the planet everyone get out of my way " kind of person that gives cyclists a bad name, I bet you cycle through red lights as well don't you? You don't think it's selfish to delibrately slow people down for no reason at all? Can you tell me a good reason for cycling side by side on a twisting country lane? Because the person on the inside was learning to ride on a busy road for the first time? That's exactly what happened on Sunday when I took my lad out and had ignorant car drivers like yourself hooting at me for riding in a defensive 3/4 'legal' position to cover him. I haven't said anything about saving the planet or red lights but you carry on with your ignorant, bigoted drivel - I'm always amused to see people wearing their stupidity like a badge of pride.
Daggers Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Contact the HR department of the local authority you work for - they should be able to help. Failing that speak to / email payroll (contact info is usually on your payslip)... they'll be able to point you in the right direction to find out more about the scheme. West Mids and Northants do not support the scheme.
Daggers Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I'm sure it's totally legal for me to walk down the pavement with my arms outstretched, but I don't do it cos I'm not a cunt. Colliding with another person on the pavement would constitute assault, and walking with your arms out would make it intentional...which, all told, would make you a stupid cunt.

I have said above I don't drive a car, I cycle over 100 miles a week on the roads in rush hour so you can wear your own stupidity like a badge of pride, the two cyclists i was refferring to were both adults and both looked like very accomplished cyclists, If I saw someone riding in the way you explained with a small child then I don't think anyone in their right mind would mind you cycling a bit wider to protect them. Yet again you've come accross as a cyclist that hates all drivers and has a huge chip on their shoulder. Whilst we are talking about Ignorant, bigoted drivel did you not post this earlier in the thread? "Banning cars from all built up areas would be good too seeing as they're all driven by the blind or mentally infirmed." So all cars are driven by the blind ot mentally infirmed?, quite an ignorant bigoted view if you ask me, that badge of stupidity you are wearing looks rather good on you.

Would you like me to write all of your posts for you, you seem unable to come up with insults of your own. Also, a little tip for the future, if you are going to question someone's intelligence than it all works a lot better if you spell, capitalise and punctuate correctly otherwise you simply reaffirm the opinion that you're dim.

Than. Absolutely superb. Than. Than. Than.
AyewJoking Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 If you cycle through a red light you arent risking just yourself. A vehicle doesnt have to hit you, they may swerve and hit someone else.
Nick Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 If you cycle through a red light you arent risking just yourself. A vehicle doesnt have to hit you, they may swerve and hit someone else. That would be my preferred option, yes.

Daggers Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I've never claimed to be anything other than simple-minded.
simmo1977 Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Some people might take the fact that you were trying to correct my grammar and spelling and make me look "dim" as you claiming to be of higher intelligence than myself. Only some people though. Would you like some sauce for that massive chip on your shoulder?

Trying to make you look dim? You don't need any help on that front. I suspect the only help you need is wiping your bottom, opening jars and crossing the road safely.

simmo1977 Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 21st century fox and Finnegan thanks for your input on this thread, never before have I read such well made points and well researched thoughtful replies and the way you joined the discussion and put across your views was breathtaking. I see between the two of you, you have posted over 26,000 posts. What an exciting life you both must lead, I think I'll leave the board for now and go outside to the real world, you two have a wonderful afternoon now and make sure you clean your rooms and eat all your dinner when your mum calls you. Au revoir.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 It looks like I've missed all the fun. I rode a bike once, wonderfully exhilarating experience
