I can assure you i'm not taking this seriously at all, I don't tend to take anything in life too seriously, if Babylon still posts on here you can ask him as i'm mates with him in "real" life.

I forgot to mention whoever posted the McDonalds road sweeper picture earlier, that was the best one by far.

What is this "real" life you speak of?

Finners I didn't stay for sixth form. The mrs did though. Claire smith be her name.

Sorry for hijacking the cycling thread.... Ooooooh pedal lubricant

That bike looks hideously uncomfortable.

It's the most comfortable I've ever owned.

But with a single gear, it's also the slowest - perfect for holding up traffic.

I've just started cycling to work again, and my bike has recently developed a horrible grinding feeling/noise (must be crank or gears, brakes seem ok). Where's the best place to take a bike for a service in/around Leicester?

That's if it's worth fixing. Not strictly a BSO, but not far off...

My bike's doing similar actually. My plan is to give it a good wash, get some proper bike lube (STEADY) and see if that solves it. I don't know anywhere in Leicester though, I live elsewhere.

I don't want to turn this into a "cyclists are dicks! No, car drivers are dicks" argument because there are dickheads in both fields. However, I cycle 20+ miles a day, stop at all red lights, quietly vent at all the cyclists who don't before catching them up by the time we get to the next red light (there's a red light every hundred yards in London, morons), try and be considerate to people in cars, tend to be quite patient, and yet I know that even if I do all that there are two certainties in the world:

  1. a lot of other cyclists are going to continue to be dickheads, understandably pissing off drivers and giving us all bad names
  2. there are still going to be moronic drivers who turn right in front of me, requiring me to slam on my brakes and avoid slamming into them by inches, despite the fact I'm wearing a fluorescent yellow jacket. Six cyclists have died in two weeks in London, you'd have thought people might check there's not one coming the other way down the road when they turn right

The second one happened to me this morning and I wanted to vent.

Also, cycle superhighways. What a waste of time. They just lull people into a false sense of security because all they are is a bit of blue paint on the tarmac. Especially the one down near Whitechapel. What a horror show.

Have you tried spraying some sort of lubricant on the crank/gears ?  :D

6 cyclists dead in London in the last week or two, absolutely frightening. I bike a lot from April to September/October and i've had many near misses. I used to be fairly reckless in my opinion but i'm far more experienced and cautious but that still doesn't put you in danger. I'm starting to question how much i'll bike next year as my route in to work since changing offices and moving house can be a bit hairy at times.

Yes! Haha I wash my bike regularly, use good cycle oil on chain and cables, and spray all other moving parts with WD. I've had it 3 or 4 years now and used it plenty, just recently having problems with the rear V-brake arm sticking which I managed to rectify, but this new problem makes going uphill a massive struggle. Don't know whether to service it (which I'm guessing will be £100-150) or put that towards a new bike

Alexikokopops - I can see both sides of the argument. When I'm cycling, I notice all the dickheads in cars that cut me off or people that walk in front of me just assuming I'll jam my brakes on. When I'm on my motorbike, I filter through traffic and every so often some dick on a bicycle will swerve in front of me just assuming the coast is clear, then they're all too happy to eff and blind about all near misses because they've got those stupid f***ing cameras so they can manipulate any situation so they're the "victim" and stick it on Youtube. When cyclists also undertake to get to the front of a queue, despite people turning left - it's bloody mental. But they always seem to be happy to scream abuse at anyone, even when they're clearly in the wrong  :/

I tend to cycle on pavements so as not to endanger myself/piss road users off, but if pedestrians are about I'll keep to a slow speed and get out of everyone's way, think that's fair.

They should legalise pavement cycling so long as you don't do more than 10mph imo.

I'd love to cycle more often but it is too dangerous.

My mate in London cycles to work and he's had two accidents in the last year, I am genuinely concerned he is going to end up killed.

Completely agree with this, people who just want to potter along on their bike and use it is a means of getting around at a slightly quicker pace than walking should be allowed on the pavement, where it is safe and sensible to do so. The problem is common sense is in short supply and it only takes a couple of dicks to cause a few accidents and then everyone is banned.

I was given an old bike that had been left outside for a good few years.  A Marin, but in reasonably good shape apart from a dry chain & quite a few rusty nuts & bolts here & there.  The gears were all over the place - I couldn't find a single one.

I've used Julies Cycles before on Clarendon Park Rd, but they are usually quite expensive.  I think the service cost me over £100 (not including any new parts).  I tried City Cycles on Narborough Rd Sth (near Asda), which was about £50.  They were crap & I had to re-jig the gears when I got it home.

I asked on here if anyone knew any decent places for servicing & it was Ken who suggested Bob Warner Cycles on Sparkenhoe Street.  I can't remember how much the service cost, but it came to under £100, which included a new bottom bracket.......which may be the problem with yours?

Excellent, cheers for the tip. I was going to try the other City Cycles branch in Thurmaston but I think I'll give them a miss - Raleigh haven't exactly got a great reputation anymore

You've got to be bonkers to want to cycle through London every day, I've knocked two over whilst being in Taxis down there in a very limited time.

One of them not just content with being pushed on his arse also had the indignity of being kicked in whilst still on the floor by a fat bald headed West Ham supporting cabbie after giving him some mouth.

I don't care if you're only going at 8mph, nobody should cycle on the pavement unless they're with a child on a bike.

This from someone who cycles from Hackney to Paddington everyday.

Why are people with a child allowed? If there is space for someone with a child to cycle on a pavement, why not someone without a child but cycling just as carefully?

If people are sensible then there is no harm in allowing cyclists on the pavement, as long as they respect pedestrians and use some common sense, unfortunately all common sense has been regulated out of people.

I hate the ones who just keep ringing their bell at you, that does **** all, you have a voice so use it. If you ring the bell, I will not move.

Well if they cycle on the road then that wouldn't be a problem

Did you swing the door open as the taxi was overtaking the cyclists ?

That was the easy bit, the hard part was pissing on them as they lay in the gutter.
