Meadows Fox Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 More Hull worshippers on here than on their own board - I keep looking at their last 2 fantastic seasons and wishing I did support them they have been so great Were they in the top 6 when Nigel left?
Mark Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Were they in the top 6 when Nigel left? No and they had struggled to score a goal all season. We'll need to score a considerable amount of goals (usually 70+) to gain promotion from this league, can you see a Pearson side doing that? In this division I have my doubts.
fleckneymike Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 I think one of the reasons people equate passing with Barcelona is because they are one of the best teams at playing in that way. Therefore if we could have exactly what we wanted (perfection), we would chose to be the best passing team, not just a load of mediocre players pretending we are the best passing team, like we did under Sousa. I never said that there is a exact trade off between winning ugly and losing pretty, I simply said that I thought that the majority of our fans would opt for winning ugly if there were. How did we win the league cup twice under O'Neill? How did we get promoted under Adams? I don't recall it was all with slick passing, but at least we got results! And as I've previously said I didn't enjoy watching the Adam's era Leicester (Paul Merson described Ian Walker as our playmaker during our promotion season). He assembled the oldest Leicester City side in history and squandered the parachute payments. We played far more football under O'Neill than we were given credit for (he benefited from inheriting a decent passing squad from McGhee which he added to wisely) and to compare his style of football to Pearson's is very dishonest. Financially we have had far greater resources than Swansea and Blackpool yet they have assembled attractive, ball playing sides on extremely modest terms.
Meadows Fox Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 No and they had struggled to score a goal all season. They were 1 point off the playoffs with a game in hand, dire situation to be in! Not bad with limited transfer budget either.
Babylon Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 No, I'm saying Nige signed him for a million without knowing if he can play at this level or even seeing him play in the flesh - unless he was at Fleetwood's games last year and his stunt double was at our games - wait a minute, this could explain the shite tactical decisions for 30 odd games!! So you think every manager in this country does their own scouting? Have you not heard of scouts? Do you think Fergie went to Crewe before signing their striker? Your pathetic attempts to bash Pearson make you look ridiculous. We know you don't like him, but perhaps stick to the truth from now on rather than making stuff up or misquoting him every other day to make him look bad.

Are you having a laugh! O'Neill nearly got sacked trying to teach the players that McGhee had brought in to play with more passion and directness, thankfully he did before it was to late. Do you think Sousa and Sven would have signed the likes of Steve Claridge and Ian Marshall?

How do you know he didn't see him in the flesh? Are you "in the know"? We do, remarkably, have scouts at the football club who most probably will've seen him play in the flesh. But you see it all and know best.

This is the Norwich game after he left, count the hoofs Check out Joachim's goal V Derby The portsmouth game is great too In fact just watch fondoogle's channel on YouTube and tell me McGhee didn't have us playing good football.

My memory of McGhee's tenure was that it was very short and that he had us playing some superb football....?

Fergie does actually try to see most players before signing them. Bebe is an example of a player he didn't watch himself nor did he have scouts regularly watching him and it looks like he's a flop. I thought it was common knowledge he liked to watch a player before signing them.

Toota Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Personally i think Pearson has adopted a selective approach in the transfer market this summer, bringing in defender Ritchie De Laet, midfielder Matty James and striker Jamie was deffo a good move!!
Corky Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Got him far didn't it? Went to the sleeping giant, which remained asleep for all of his tenure, whilst we headed to Wembley and beyond.
Guest Col city fan Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Got him far didn't it? He made his choice, which was the wrong one. But he still has us playing some very good football. Which was the original suggestion.

Guest Col city fan Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 I'm glad someone remembered my original point. Of course... It's churlish to simply have a bash at McGhee because he moved on. Although I do remember signing the 'cheer up' song at Wembley. And youre spot on about Claridge. He was actually a very intelligent player who could hold the ball up brilliantly when we needed him to. Much better than anything we possess in that department now.

McGhee and Little have both apologised for what they did and that is good enough for me. Claridge was an excellent player who sadly became a viewed as a limited journeyman because of his ease with the press and penchant for a quick and ready quip. We've not had an intelegent forward in a very long time. These debates become too tribal and debates cease to be debates but rather questions of 'loyalty' or 'facts' which is a shame.
Meadows Fox Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Oh and Claridge has never been a clogger. He's suffered from one off the cuff comment that he 'shinned it' Where do I call him a clogger? Is that what you class a player who works hard and is committed as?

fleckneymike Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 Where do I call him a clogger? Is that what you class a player who works hard and is committed as? I interpreted your point that would Sven or Sousa sign Claridge or Marshall as inferring that they couldn't play in a passing side or a side which have a slightly less agricultural approach than other CIty sides. If that wasn't your point I would be grateful if you could tell me what it was. I would like to point out that Sven did sign one Daniel Dichio whilst at Sampdoria (and that's not a compliment).

No not at all Claridge and Marshall were excellent, loved them both, would they be effective in a team that plays the way that Sven and Sousa does? I'm not so sure? So Sven signed Daniel Dichio was he successful at Sampdoria? (sorry i couldn't care less about Italian football)I just find it really difficult to understand why you would seem to prefer watching Sousa/Sven's/ McGhee's teams (zero success) All I want for us to get into the Premiership, and I think we stand a good chance this season. Guess time will tell!

Guess time will tell! Football is about entertainment though, well it is for me. I want to be entertained whilst watching football and being successful is a form of entertainment. However, to a degree I feel playing a poor style of football, ie the percentage game is a bit like cheating. Last year whilst West Ham were hoofing it constantly, I desperately wanted them to stay down, when, towards the end of the season they played better football I had no problem with them going up. Of course we all want to see success and entertaining football but if I was given the choice of, going up automatically playing poor football or scraping 6th but ppaying amazing football, I might just settle for the second option. I wont complain about the football if we're successful but there will always be part of me that thinks 'this isnt right'
fleckneymike Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 I could give two shits about the Premiership. Over the course of our 127 history we've won 11 things. 11. Personally during the other 116 years I'd like to watch entertaining football played in a style which encourages quick interpassing rather than the unedifying spectacle of us flailing around hoofing and clogging and trying really really hard. I know that sounds churlish and petulant but I want more from the side I follow than simply trying hard and existing. Since O'neill left there hasn't been one City side I'll be fondly reminiscing about in decades to come and not one player who has had me on the edge of my seat.
