What's a good first car?

I don't know much about cars, obviously I want it to last a while, be cheap to insure and look relatively decent.

Hook me up brothas.

Budget and criteria?

Probably about 1.2k budget, just regular day to day stuff really, going to work, football, some away days etc.

I was looking at the 206 but apparently they've always got problems. It's a shame because it looks the nicest.

My bro had one and that was fine for him. Can't recall any problems he had! That's just one out of millions though so I understand your point!

Ford Fiesta, too, should be considered for a run-around car as already mentioned. Same goes for Vauxhall Corsa.

Does the 1.2k have to include insurance? Because if so you won't have much left.

I've had a couple of 206s and never really had any probs with em. Cheap to insure and pretty good mpg. Peugeots are good cos they pretty rust resistant compared to some other manufacturers such as Renault, Ford etc.

Pug 206s are lovely cars for the money but prone to many problems.

If it's reliability you're after, go boring.

If you want a jack-of-all-trades car, get a Focus - one that's had its cam belt done. Good to drive, practical, cheap to fix, look OK.

Oh no haha, I'd be buggered if that were the case. Insurance comes after.

I've got a Corsa. Obviously I want to improve on it, but it's a decent choice as a first car. Cost me less than £700 as well.

I have a Peugeot 306 sat in the car park you can have. Although the clutch has totally gone and it's been battered by halestones. Oh and it needs a new Cat before next MOT. lol.

Yours for £200. I'm serious too. Ha.

And I've just gone out and my rear windscreen wiper fell off lol

Ford Focus a good bet. That little bit bigger and more practical - better for longer away day journeys, and more roomy and comfy to fit several mates in!

Volkswagen Lupo.

Dirt cheap insurance, looks characterful, totally reliable, sips fuel (1L engine, or any of the diesels) - can't go wrong. After MattyFromLE wrote mine off a year ago, I bought a Renault Megane - which has cost me almost £2,000 in replacement parts so far cause it's a poorly-made heap of shit. Anyway that got battered by the recent hailstorm and the insurers are picking it up at the end of the month. Fingers crossed it's a write-off, then I can get a...

Also, Seat Arosa is basically the same car. Cheaper, but uglier.

Not if you have it in "Jazz blue" like my old one! The GTi model is a bit boy-racer looking, and a few chavvy idiots (probably the more intelligent ones) have recently started getting the standard models and lowering them and adding whatnot (tacky alloys, stupid bonnet nappies, larger exhausts with massively botched bumpers)

But yeah, I would definitely recommend one as a first car. Everything you need, unless you're regularly taking 4 passengers or visiting Ikea. As for the Focus, I learnt to drive in one. Very nicely planted, handles well
