davieG Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Merc Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has demanded his side show more desire this season. City begin their pre-season fixtures tonight with the short trip to face Hinckley United (7.30) . Nigel Pearson with Leicester City's players during the open training session at the King Power Stadium Pearson said he wanted to rectify the criticism that was aimed at his squad last season, that they did not show enough commitment and hunger as they failed to live up to their pre-season billing as promotion challengers. Rather than sign established stars, the City boss has mainly recruited young, hungry players at the start of their careers, such as midfielder Danny Drinkwater and winger Ben Marshall during the January transfer window, plus defender Ritchie De Laet, midfielder Matty James and strikers Jamie Vardy and Marko Futacs during the summer. All of his signings share the common trait of wanting to build their careers, taste success and play in the Premier League, and Pearson said that was exactly what he was looking for. "We were criticised last season when people questioned our desire. We will try to rectify that," he said. "It is about the players wanting success as well and working very hard because the pressure is always on. "All the players we have brought, I am delighted to bring in, all of them. "They give us what we are looking for, a lot of drive and desire. "They want to progress their own careers and they want to do that here. "I think that is the type of quality we need, on top of the football quality they bring. "I just think they will give a different flavour to the squad this year and they complement what we have got already." City struggled to cope with the tag of pre-season promotion favourites last season, and they have again been installed as one of the fancied teams by the bookmakers for the new campaign. But Pearson said he was taking no notice of the odds. Instead, he said City were focused on putting right the disappointments of last season "I don't really take a great deal of notice of that," he said. "But what you have to remember is that we are going to put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to achieve success this season. That is the most important thing. "The external pressure will be there anyway. We need to make sure we apply the right pressure on ourselves. "We have got to show the desire and commitment to go and out and be a success ourselves this season. "Whether that is the manager, the players or any of the staff, that is what we aspire for. "Last season was a disappointment, and we have to go and put that right."
Fox92 Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Can't argue with that, and hopefully we will see desire and fight again.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 That's the nail right on the head - Pearson knows what went wrong. Where Sven was eager to spend whatever to bring in players who seemed to think they were above the team for one reason or another, Pearson has a good logic in seeing young players potential and getting the most out of them. It's a good long term plan, and when he gets it right it'll hopefully lead to promotion. Maybe not this season, but sooner or later. It's also much more fulfilling to watch a team of players that genuinely want to win, and much less of a financial risk
cc_star Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Desire can be the difference between a defeat & a draw or a draw & a win, add it up over a season & it makes a hell of a difference.
Guest Col city fan Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 desire is nothing without aptitude though. This... Desire AND ability = success. The desire will be there under a Pearson side. Let's hope the ability matches it.
Corky Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 by seenitall/DANGEROUS TIGER/TrickyFoxUsual Pearson rhetoric whilst not improving the squad and getting rid of players that would be key this season. Expecting to be disappointed and telling you all so in May, or hopefully when he's sacked in October. He's a DOG. Where's Harry Redknapp's quotes? Is he not our manager?
Grey Fox Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Desire is nothing without the actual ability. Ability is nothing without desire either. Works both ways.
Leicester_Numan Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Desire can be the difference between a defeat & a draw or a draw & a win, add it up over a season & it makes a hell of a difference. Exactly the same thing applies to positive support from the crowd
seenitall Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 "We were criticised last season when people questioned our desire. We will try to rectify that," Does he want to rectify the criticism of the players or their actual desire? Did he think that really last year they had desire or that they didn't - and if they didn't, why didn't he get them to at least fake some, even if they weren't hungry enough - besides, who has sold who played last year and wasn't hungry enough? Sol always seemed to try and he never really played Mills, most of the others he's dumped never got a look in anyway - hopefully Gally, Dyer, Beckford, Nugent, Wellens King will all be fired up, and where he couldn't get them to show any desire or actually have any desire last season they will now have some Good rhetoric for the start of a season though, keeps the (blind) faithful feeding at the trough
