21st Century Fox Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 Concert venue seems like the default option for any white elephant (Millenium Dome, et al). Exclusively football doesn't seem right. Multi-use would be the fairest, it should be kept as a monument to how diverse The Games were and be used for the big money spinning concerts, maybe some football and most importantly for sports that may not otherwise be afforded access to such facilities.
BlueSi13 Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 I think it would take a big football team to keep the stadium financially viable but i think keeping the ability to hold top class athletics and concerts would be right for its long term legacy.
Jordan Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 I don't think giving it to a football team is 'inspiring a generation.' It should be a multi use arena, predominantly athletics Absolutely. The UK already took one phenomenal athletics arena and turned it into a football ground within the last 10 years--why does it need to do that again? You have enough football stadiums already, including a few other massive ones in the same city. Leave it as a multi-use facility, leave it able to host athletics events both for the future (perhaps try to get a World Championships) and as a way to commemorate an outstanding Olympics. You can host a variety of other events there so as not to make it a white elephant (and not ruin the Wembley pitch with things like the NFL International Series after 2014). If West Ham want to play there so badly, they can qualify for the Champions League and play their CL home games there like Arsenal did a few years back.
ADK Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 Would be nice to make it a pure athletics stadium, i don't know if the demand is great enough to make that viable though.
Super_horns Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 Money talks I suspect and West Ham willg et it but have to keep the track which their fans will love..NOT!
Captain... Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 Would be nice to make it a pure athletics stadium, i don't know if the demand is great enough to make that viable though. I don't think the demand would be there for athletics, apart from Golden Saturday we didn't quite hit home in the athletics like in other sports, it has to be a multi purpose show piece venue, maintaining the athletics track, but also capable of hosting an Ashes Test, a big football match, the NFL game they like to play over here every year, the next well meaning attempt by pop stars to change the world, and on every free date get bus loads of school kids in to run 100m or throw something sharp.
davieG Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 They used to have a County Schools Athletics Sports day where the best athletes in the County competed if this still exists or even if it doesn't they could roll it out further and have it culminate in an Annual National Schools Athletics Championship held there. Maybe they already have one and it's held at Crystal Palace?

Cracking suggestions. I like the idea of FA Cup semi-finals being held there, as I feel the only FA Cup match that should be played at Wembley is the final, but I'm sure Wembley has a long term contract to host the semis. All of those ideas would be good though, especially getting the NFL away from Wembley where the pitch gets cut up to shit.
ADK Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 NFL is shit, we have enough crap sports already without introducing more.
Webbo Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 I don't think Wembley can afford to lose any games any time soon.
Corky Posted 13 August 2012 Posted 13 August 2012 They spent so much money on Wembley that they can't afford to let go of potential matches. Make it a multi-purpose stadium, but not football, seeing as the athletics track is staying.
Guest MattP Posted 14 August 2012 Posted 14 August 2012 NFL is shit, we have enough crap sports already without introducing more. What other shit sports in this country can bring it 90,000 every time it's played? the NFL is great for London. I love the idea of a lot here mentioned, the FA semis, multi purpose, England V Oz T20. Possibilities are endless.
