Tielemans63 Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/aug/29/andrew-strauss-england-captain-live Shame if true. He's been an inspirational captain. However he's 35 now so maybe the time is right?
Fox in the North Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Confirmed, shame, but it's probably the right time. Played some great games
Guest MattP Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Great shame but when the time is right you know it, he's 35 and he was really struggling for runs against top attacks. Thanks for the memories Straussy, winning it in Sydney was the amazing. One last time!!!! We came over from old Blighty The Barmy Army and me Around Brisbane town we did roam 6 quid for a pint, a grand for a flight With Strauss our captain, we'll take the urn home So hoist up the John B sail See how the mainsail sails Call for the captain ashore Take the urn home We'll take the urn home We'll take the urn home With Strauss our captain We'll take the urn home Ricky Ponting's a broken man Without Warne he has no plan He tries to carry the team all on his own He's losing his hair But we don't care 'Cos Strauss our captain will take the urn home So hoist up the John B sail See how the mainsail sails Call for the captain ashore Take the urn home We'll take the urn home We'll take the urn home With Strauss our captain We'll take the urn home Graeme Swann is a caring guy Rescues cats in his spare time Now he's gonna tear the Aussies apart They can't read his spin And so England will win 'Cos Strauss our captain will take the urn home So hoist up the John B sail See how the mainsail sails Call for the captain ashore Take the urn home We'll take the urn home We'll take the urn home With Strauss our captain We'll take the urn home :trumpet: :englandsmile4wf:
Corky Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Brilliant captain, wonderful batsman, great bloke. Best of luck Straussy, you're an England great
Vacamion Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Fair play to a captain who led his country through a golden period of our cricketing history. Any of you young enough not to remember England getting regularly dicked by the rest of the cricketing world won't appreciate just how good his period as captain has been...

If you'd have said 10/12 years ago we'd win the Ashes 3 times (including one in Australia), thump India 4-0 and go to the top of the world rankings you'd have been called deluded, mad, whatever.
Captain... Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Top bloke, great captain, sadly no longer the top batsman he was. Cook is just going to carry on as he has been groomed for this role for a while, but who will take his role as opener? Are there any budding openers out there, or will it be Trott to open, Bell to 3, then Bopara, Bairstow, Taylor, Morgan fighting it out for the middle order roles?

Was thinking the same thing, we have a variety of options at 5-6 etc but nothing I can think of in County Cricket is close to being an International opener. First thought I'd be going......... Cook Bell Trott Taylor/Pietersen Bairstow Bopara/Morgan (time for him to come back now imo) Prior Broad Swann Anderson Finn 4-5-6 could have to grow up very fast.
oxford blue Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Matt P said "Was thinking the same thing, we have a variety of options at 5-6 etc but nothing I can think of in County Cricket is close to being an International opener." The only person I can think of is Joe Root (Yorkshire). He's 21 and scored an unbeaten double century in July. Cook was very young when he was given a chance, so I think this may be a possibility. He bowls some of breaks too. I can't see Bell as opener in test matches. This does open the way for pietersen to return, provided he makes his apologies. England will be very short of experience if he doesn't return they tour India. I also think it may be time to give nick Compton a chance ar no.6. Having said that, Taylor might do better against india who don't have the quality pace bowlers he seemed to struggle against.
Voll Blau Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Apparently he's running for the Tories in Corby http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2195199/Andrew-Strauss-Is-ex-England-cricket-captain-set-Westminster-Speculation-Strauss-stand-Tories-Corby-election.html
Guest MattP Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Fantasy to suggest he'll run for Corby. I've got no doubt he'll get involved in the Conservatives at some point in the future as he's done some great fundraisers but I don't think it's going to happen yet and it certainly won't be Corby!!
FoxyPV Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Very good captain, cricketer and from the timing of his departure, very self aware. I could see Trott rather than Bell moving up to open.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Ashes might be a little more interesting now with no KP and Straus.
Corky Posted 29 August 2012 Posted 29 August 2012 Very good captain, cricketer and from the timing of his departure, very self aware. I could see Trott rather than Bell moving up to open. Seems a logical move, although Trott is a fine number 3. Might benefit Bell and Cook to open together in two forms of the game.

That was my thinking, Trott looks settled at Three, it's surely more sensible ina team where we will will already be bumping people around to keep as many as possible in a natural spot, Trott moving up to 2 means Bell goes to 3 and we could all of a sudden have a top 6 where only one batsman is in the same spot they were 3 months ago.
Guest MattP Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Bring Gatting out of retirement Atherton, that would be too good. Get a proper barmy army back as well where losing was the thing to do and we just got pissed and had a song-song.

Guest MattP Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 We get pissed wether we win or lose. Liar, you don't even turn up when you lose
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Liar, you don't even turn up when you lose Some of us aren't on holidays and have jobs we must attened plus it just looks empty. Trent Bridge 15,000 a sell out MCG 50,000 still looks empty.
Alexikokopops Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Love him. I was watching a video of that catch from 2005 and it's incredible to see what the job has done to his hair! Proof, if it were needed, of the pressures of captaincy

Proof, if it were needed, of the pressures of captaincy It's happened to several. Gooch and Vaughany both used hair restorer, Nasser had little hair so it didn't affect him too much.
