The media led public agenda / September 11th

Today is September 11th.

A date that will be etched onto my memory for all of my life for so many reasons.

I'm certainly not one of the pro mourner brigade, and my memories of this event are more historic than anything else.

But isn't it interesting how the media manipulate public opinion? And what's on the public agenda.

Not one mention all day.

It's been Olympics and Murray all day, in fact you could be forgiven for completely forgetting that today is the anniversary of when the World changed.

The media is a dangerous tool.

I noticed this, this morning too. I was expecting to see/hear about it all day again, as usual, but nope, zip, nada, nothing.

I think he was being sarky, Simmsy.

What! Me? Sarcastic?

That was me being restrained, there are a lot of tasteless images out there that it would be very ill advised of me to have posted, that helped me release my urge to cause mischief in a fairly harmless way.

Also it is past the 10th anniversary, nobody cares any more, last year was the big one, the next will be 20 years on, but I doubt we will hear much over here until at least the 15th anniversary.

It is called moving on, and not living in fear.

Which is why Im surprised to hear nothing about it today. The news etc has been full of nothing but fear and war since that day. An easy opportunity for the media or the American government to stir up more fear or hatred going unused? Thats a little worrying.

We are in a post Olympic bubble, don't worry it will burst soon, but Murray's success will keep it going a bit longer.

Phew, I just want the scaremongering to come back. I cant handle all this positive energy, it scares me. Someone, quick, put up more CCTV cameras or make a shoe bomb!

Well the world didn't change on that day. Maybe the Americans and some others in the west realised that they are not as safe as they thought they were, that not only second and third world countries could be attacked and have horrors on their streets.

But your point about the media totally ignoring it and therefore removing it from the conscious of a large part of the population is very accurate and your point about the media being a dangerous tool is spot on.

Just go on the main forum here and read back a few weeks, will that do for reactionary scaremongering?

The World did change that day.

Just look at Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan.. The Arab Spring, The price of oil, the use of fear as a political tool etc etc etc.

The world changes every day.

I'm glad we're slowly getting over it and it hasn't been smeared everywhere.

The media IS a dangerous tool and the previous yearly reminders of 9/11 were an example of that, as the press continued to drum up a level of fear and paranoia post-disaster.

I dont agree.

And we should be reminded what people are capable of if the eye is taken off the ball.

The media agenda dictates the talking points / important issues almost completely these days.

We should not to begin to ignore what radical Islamic terrorism is capable of.

Or indeed any terrorism

Not only are you wrong but you're happy being wrong and I'm not going to change your mind.

I doubt anyone would forget what happened on this day, mass media coverage or not.

I still think September 11th is the biggest event (outside of my personal and family life) in my life so far. I don't think I'll ever forget it, regardless of media coverage in this Country. Nobody can prevent terrorists, and the next attack could be tomorrow, next month or next year.

I'm sure everyone alive pre-9/11 will always remember (it's one of those events, "where were you?"), and I'm sure that people born post-9/11 will know about it. One thing's for sure, let's hope this thread doesn't turn out like the 7/7 thread which was eventually closed. Ultimately, 9/11 was another sick and horrible attack undertaken by terrorists, which resulted in 3,000 innocent death's (and thousands more post-9/11). RIP.

You're assuming that if it isn't in the media then it's not being thought about, there's loads of stuff that's in the media that i couldn't care less about (e.g celebrity shit) and there's even more that i think about that's important to me that never gets mentioned in the media.

Well if that's your attitude you might as well stop posting on ft.

Seriously.

No really.
