In general doesn't mean all.

It kinda does.

Yes.

Take religion out of the equation then. What caused the events?

All religions or just some?

Posted

It kind of doesn't. If the very concept of religion didn't exist, would this have happened?

If football didn't exist would Hillsborough have happened?

It kinda does.

No it doesn't.

In general english footballers have no skill.

Does it mean all english footballers have no skill? No it is a generalization.

Religious bigots make film > religious extremists don't like film > man dies.

Blood seems to be on the hands of religion in general here.

Not for the first time and not for the last.

Apart from making a shed load of money for a handful of vested interests and making people who are scared to die feel marginally less afraid what good does religion ever actually do? If we don't all blow each other up or die from pollution we'll evolve out of perceiving the need for such a fantastical coping mechanism eventually.

We seem to have been stuck with the same boring old few for ages now anyway. Isn't it about time someone made up another one? I know there have been a few half arsed attempts but nothing really catchy.

I just went and read about 6 lines of the BBC article on this event and it's already quite clear that it's not merely an enraged mob on the rampage. The compound came under sustained fire at 22:00 and four hours later, the place had been torched, 4 Americans were dead but the US were back in control (with the assistance of Libyan forces). That's hardly a riot, that's a concerted military raid. The idea that it boils down to some religious slight is ludicrous.

EDIT: Just misposted this in the race joke thread if any of you are wondering why you've already read it!

So you don't think the attack was video'd and badly edited with that idiotic Islamic chanting edited over the top, a waving jihad flag in the corner with the attackers repeatedly shouting 'allah hu akbar' as they fire their AK's and fire off decrepit old RPG's?

If that's not influenced by Islam I don't know what is.

I know it's an incredibly complicated region with all sorts of tribes and factions vying for power, but it all boils down to one thing; religion keeping that part of the world in the stone ages.

I don't know, Scientology gets some originality points for the creative use of Aliens and having the ability to make Hollywood stars jump on sofas.

He is not saying it is not influenced by Islam, he is saying it doesn't sound like a spontaneous angry mob, but rather a calculated well armed attack.

If you read the bbc article you will see it that there was evidence of thus being planned for a while and this film, which is dodgy anyway, is just a diversion.

Wrong.

This thread is another poor attempt for a small-minded poster to use an incident to propagate their racist views.

Wooop dere it is.

I do not understand the relevance of this post.

To try and judge or understand the behaviour or actions of the people of Libya and the Middle East by western standards won't work. Their world is so different and often the name of Islam is used to justify tribal, criminal or political action. Differentiating which are genuine reactions to perceived western defamation of Islam and which are smoke screens for somthing more political is often impossible. What we see are just pictures, behind the pictures there is a complex and lawless infrastructure where fear is the major influence in the lives of most, armed groups will dictate an individual's or groups behavior by intimidation and threats again in the name of their beliefs.

We have of course now realised there can be no total military solution, that only buys you the removal of the current regime and a little time. But to be frank, there is little chance of a political solution either, too many factions with their own agenda's developed over many, many years.
