Newcastle to play at the Wonga Stadium?

Newcastle United are set to sign a multi-million pound shirt and stadium sponsorship deal with payday lender Wonga.

  • The Sunday Telegraph reports that the club will finalise an agreement worth £8 million a year within the next fortnight.

The deal will begin from the start of the 2013/14 season and last for three years.

While Newcastle fans will welcome the injection of cash, they may wince at their St James' Park home being renamed the Wonga Stadium.

In 2009 owner Mike Ashley rechristened it Sportsdirect @ St James' Park after his own chain of sportswear stores - a move that provoked considerable anger among supporters.

Last year the ground, Newcastle's home since 1892, became the Sports Direct Arena.

Wonga offers short-term loans at very high interest rates. It currently has a shirt sponsorship deal with Blackpool.

Meh. Doesn't really make much difference now. Don't most people still call it St James' anyway? I do, same as calling ours The Walkers.

Oh right, I see the reaction you wanted here. Bit needy but whatever.

EXTRA, EXTRA, FOOTBALL CLUB SELLS RIGHTS TO STADIUM NAME IN EXCHANGE FOR LUCRATIVE CONTRACT!

It's happened before.....lots.....including to us. This is barely news, it was already the Sports Direct Arena, what does this change?

With regard to FFP I see a lot of clubs doing this, there will come a time when the Etihad gets another name change by another of Sheik Al Mansours companies and he can sell it for what he wants! Just another loophole in the rules if you ask me.

So THAT'S why Pardew got an 8 year contact

because he looks like one of the puppets in the adverts.

Yep, Pardew is a yes man.

I agree it's sad but we all know it's the direction football has gone in the last decade.

Loan Shark Park.

Beat me to it.

Yet another display of sheer class from Ashley. How many more decades will the geordies have to wait for their next trophy? lol

What's that got to do with it? They've changed the name from Sports Direct to Wonga....I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that won't effect their football.

Newcastle United Agrees Sponsorship Deal With Wonga

Newcastle United has agreed a new four-year deal with wonga.com which will make the digital finance company the Club’s lead commercial sponsor. In addition to sponsoring the team shirt from the start of the 2013/14 season and working on a range of other initiatives with fans, Wonga will invest at least £1.5m in two of the Club’s most important projects.

Wonga is investing in Newcastle United’s young talent by providing significant financial support for the Academy. The investment will enable the Club to transform its Academy into one of the leading centres of youth football development in the country, enabling us to nurture the top playing stars of the future. The Academy has around 150 boys between the ages of nine to 18 on its books. In addition to standard evening and weekend training sessions, the Academy has 35 boys attending on weekday afternoons from Monday to Thursday for classroom learning as well as training.

Wonga has also committed to invest in the Newcastle United Foundation Enterprise Scheme. The existing programme helps 15-16 year-olds find employment by developing their skills and experience through practical and educational courses. Wonga’s investment will vastly expand the scheme and help more young people in the North East in their future careers.

Other initiatives with Wonga will include a straight talking forum with the fans for discussing ideas for fan involvement in the Club and working on a specific new initiative to involve fans in the design of the shirt.

Derek Llambias, Managing Director of Newcastle United, said: “We are building a club that can regularly compete for top honours at the highest level. As everyone knows, a strong commercial programme is vital to this goal and I am delighted to welcome Wonga into the fold as our lead commercial partner, alongside Puma and Sports Direct. Throughout our discussions Wonga’s desire to help us invest in our young playing talent, the local community and new fan initiatives really impressed us and stood them apart from other candidates.â€

Wonga provides small, short-term loans online and via smartphones. To date the company has provided over six million loans, while generating industry-leading satisfaction rates from customers.

Errol Damelin, founder and CEO of Wonga said: “We’re really proud to be involved with Newcastle United. It is one of the biggest and most important clubs in the UK by any measure and has a fantastic following around the world. We’re also really excited about investing in future stars both on and off the field. The Academy and the Enterprise Scheme gives us the opportunity to make a big difference.â€

“We have just launched our small business offering and there are more great products to come. We know our customers love football and it goes without saying that, alongside Newcastle United, we will continue to support Blackpool and SFA Cup Winners Hearts.â€

Newcastle United's £24m shirt sponsorship deal with Wonga has been engulfed in fresh controversy after the club's Muslim players were warned that wearing the new shirts would infringe Sharia law.

The saddest part is actually that a company like Wonga got to where it is right now.

It speaks more volumes about our credit-savvy and thus consumption-oriented culture than it does about the state of football.

If you'd make more people aware of what a "budget" is and what it means, lots of problems and terrible conflicts could be avoided.

Surely the same would have gone for Virgin Money or Northern Rock?

Unless Sharia has strict laws on Interest rates.

Did Kanoute not do the same when he was in Spain as the team he played for were sponsored by a gambling company? They just made a shirt for him with no sponsor on it.

No big deal really.

Yeah 888.com, he wears a blank shirt and forfeits his sponsorship money.

Bit more of a problem with Newcastle though given 4-5 of their starters are Muslim.

Yeah it's to do with usury/riba.

I realise that, what I'm saying is what's the difference, all three companies profits are based on the usury/riba.

Do they just object to Wonga because theirs is bigger?

Surely if they are taking the words of the Quran this literally they would struggle to even play football given their teammates?

Riba is considered amongst the Seven heinous sins (Al-Saba al-Mubiqat - السَبعَ الموبÙقاتÙ), namely:[1]

  • Believing in gods other than Allah.
  • Magic.
  • Murder.
  • Riba/usury.
  • Unlawfully taking orphans' money.
  • Fleeing the battlefield.
  • Accusing chaste, pious women.
