Is it me or has whoever decides what Ikea flog been smoking the wacky backy?

I know it's not everyone's cup of team anyway, but until the last few years when you wanted a half decent cheap piece of furniture for your house that was'nt complete shit and fitted in with the average houses decor then Ikea was a decent bet.

Now everything looks like it should be in some arty show house, is painted odd colours and would stick out like a sore thumb.

What happened to the normal furniture.

Like clothes shops, it's more profitable to target the artsy fashion faggots who change their furniture every six months than it is to target someone who is happy to keep the same shit for years on end

Faggots? They can buy furniture now? 186-faggots.jpg

IKEA?!?

I'm sick of hearing about that place in this house...

As Kevin Rowland once commented in quite a different context: "Burn it down! For God's sake, burn it down!"

That figures.

Sell some garish high fashion crap that will go out of fashion in 5 minutes so people keep having to buy new items.

However all I wanted was a wooden book shelf and unless I want something that looks fresh out of a hookers boudoir I'm stuffed.

Hi ho off to ebay I go.

You can still get decent wooden bookshelf from Ikea. Billy bookcases are pretty standard, not garish or anything.

Although I do agree with your general point, a lot of the stuff does seem to be horrible now days.

Those evil Swedes producing cheap, stylish and functional furniture accessible to the average man. Bastards.

I'd much rather my house was full of the sort of chintzy garbage that littered everybody's house when I was a kid.

Is that cheese on those faggots? Where do you think you are, ****ing Milan?

Not sure it is cheese, that would indeed be a continental abomination fit for the grumpy thread. More likely the faggots are wrapped in the caul.

I agree - there's plenty of wanky crap on sale there to cater to people who are into that sort of thing, but there's still a fair bit of smart furniture. I got a few bits for my place from Ikea recently - the Malm stuff is plain and smart:

I must be the only person who goes there and only leaves with meatballs.

Been twice... only came away with a fake pot plant. I only got that as I couldn't face having done that journey and two hours of nightmare shopping again and coming home with nothing.

And a Daim cake, those things are fantastic

I dread going, but some of the stuff is good value if you can't afford the best

While on the subject, I'm actually after a wardrobe (for an old collection of about 1,000 retro games) and am looking at their Pax range - heard good things elsewhere - anyone got one here? Just moved into my first house and the missus hates my game collection but appreciates I don't fancy bunging it all in the loft - a tall wardrobe is my best bet and I have a budget of £300 max.

Very useful shop and good fun trying to find different ways out, I don't mind a bit of cheery furniture. Particularly useful when eldest daughter went off to uni and we spent a morning in there and got everything she needed for her student flat all in the one place at a very reasonable price. The meat balls are very good, you can get the recipe on line.

I hate the place but have to admit our bedroom, nursery, conservatory and my study (under threat now) are all completely IKEA.

Only my lounge has proper 'solid' furniture in it.

I used to like it (and still like the meatballs) but the prices at least in Bordeaux have increased considerably on many things.

If you want good solid decent furniture go to an auction - there's one every week in Market Harborough. You can get great furniture with history for bery low prices at the moment.

If you're buying the meatballs to take home make sure you get the sauce as well.

I've had several items over the years as they were always cheap & cheerful. I haven't been for years & when recently looking online for one or two things, I did think the prices had shot up.

I would be more inclined to look elsewhere. Like you say, eBay or auction.

When considering the build quality, how long it will last, it's aesthetics & the price..........if I was buying new, there isn't a massive difference between Ikea, Next, M&S, John Lewis, etc.

I have one of the Poang chairs which is a bit dodgey (the seat has collapsed) but I only use it as a clothes horse anyway.

My ex had some drawers from there which we're sturdy and did her good.

It's not bad for what it is, I think a lot of people only slate it because they think that it is fashionable to do so.
