The Year Of The Fox Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 A few of my work mates seem to think Rooney will be on his way at the end of the season. I happen to disagree but think he's one of the most overrated players there is. Certainly England play worse when he's on the field as everything seems to have to revolve around him. With RVP in such form, Utd doing fine without him at the moment (due to injury) and I believe Rooney has said something recently which may have peed off Fergie, could he be on his way shortly?

As GLC said, he's been injured but there has been a lot of talk of Rooney dropping deeper and playing centre midfield. Can see it happening.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 13 January 2013 Author Posted 13 January 2013 Isn't he injured? yes at the moment. But they're doing OK without him, Hernandez and Welbeck both filling in and contributing more than he does IMO

He's played CM before, i can see him playing a bit like a younger Gerrard, Getting in to the box late and working as a good link up between the midfield and strikers
Guest shearfox Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 I doubt it, he will play any role he is asked to play, I'm sure he prefers playing the central role upfront has shown by his goal scoring last season but with the arrival of RVP he has been pushed into positions that don't benefit him but rather benefit the team. He has started this season slow and picked up some injuries but I'm sure he can get back to his best.
Bryn Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 He will end up playing centre mid and I wager he'll be damn good at it, I've said it for years.
Dan Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 He's always been over-rated, he's never been "England's only world class player" like so many seem to think. He's a very talented player but Aguero, Tevez, Suarez & RVP are all better IMO. Not a bad one to have but nowhere near this talisman that so many seem to think he is, never turns up where it matters for England and truth be told, rarely does for Man Utd. There's far better out there.
Haydos Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 Cracking player but not been at the top level for a while. No chance he's done at United yet.

Dan Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 Ran out of +1's for today else you'd be getting one Cheers. I actually think for the last 5 years England have had two world class players and neither are Rooney. Both are Chelsea defenders and both are two of the most detestable characters playing the game.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 13 January 2013 Author Posted 13 January 2013 Another plus one for calling cole detestable
Jimothy Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 I was talking to my mate a while ago about Rooney and we both had the same opinion. He's not really become what he could have become. When he started out at Everton and then his early days at Man Utd his style of play promised he'd become our Messi or Ronaldo (I know Messi wasn't really around back then but you know what I mean), but all he seems to have turned into is a pure and simple goalscorer. Sure he works hard, but he doesn't dictate games, he doesn't drive his team on, like he did to a degree when he was younger. The likes of Messi and Ronaldo do that and score too. The young Rooney would pick the ball up deep and run at people, bring others into play or create a goal from nothing, now the older Rooney, if he comes deep he loses it and the rest of the time he's waiting around to score tap ins. I'm not saying it's down to Man Utd and Fergie, but he become a worse player since going there. Could have been so much more.

His goal scoring is impressive i guess, but as you say, his other attributes are shit. Passing is woeful, we know about his temperament. Id prefer it if he didnt go wandering looking for the ball when England are behind. He tries to do too much and isn't good st any of it

Rooney was better when he was just a raw talent, he was able to burst past players and produce moments of absolute magic, now when he tries to take a player on he always loses the ball. His still a great player but hasn't fulfilled his potential... Euro 2004 was an example of just the potential he had, he was genius in that tournament.

He tries to do too much and isn't good st any of it But he seemed to have those attributes as a youngster, and over the years they seem to have tailed off. When I first saw Rooney burst onto the scene, I hoped he'd play along side Defoe or Bent for England, and while they ran the line, he'd drop deep and make things happen. Popping up all over the place and effecting the game all over the pitch. Our talisman. But he's become England's Bent, just another goal poacher. I'm not sure why those attributes have tailed off btw, not sure if he doesn't work as hard on his passing and dribbling any more because Fergie doesn't want he to be that type of player. Whatever has happened he's become a worse player for it.

Corky Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 kingfox wouldn't want him, being a Man United player and all that.
Charl91 Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 He is so overrated. Considering a lot of people rate him as the best striker in the BPL, he's never once won the Golden Boot. Hell, even Anelka and Berbatov have won it.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 Most over-rated player since Beckham. I'm not saying that either of them were bad players, they're both very good, but neither deserves the god-like reputation they carry.
MooseBreath Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 Rooney was better when he was just a raw talent, he was able to burst past players and produce moments of absolute magic, now when he tries to take a player on he always loses the ball. His still a great player but hasn't fulfilled his potential... Euro 2004 was an example of just the potential he had, he was genius in that tournament. This. He was the best player in the world for a few weeks that summer. And then we scored a hat-trick on his debut for Man U in the Champions League, he looked like he might keep it up. Sadly he didn't, and his performance at Euro 2012 was the worst I've ever seen from any England player. He genuinely looked like an amateur player. Despite that, Fergie still sees fit to play him, perhaps for a lack of better options, and his overall record doesn't read too badly. He's an average top-half Premiershp striker, nothing more.
Guest ttfn Posted 13 January 2013 Posted 13 January 2013 Great player. So much shit being talked here. In the last 3 and a half seasons he's scored 71 goals in 108 Premier League games. Not bad for somebody who's been shit since Euro 2004. He may not have turned out to be the white Pele, but he's only 27 and has already had a fabulous, glittering career.
