The perfect football club model

If you could choose any club as a role model as how to run a club who would it be?

I'm talking about sound financial management, good transfer policy, club philosophy, handling of management and staff etc....

My personal choice would be Swansea. They've built something by sticking with their managers and always bringing in someone to ale the club on another level whilst picking up bargain players and playing attractive football.

In the UK Swansea is a good shout.

You could go with any number of German clubs though, St Pauli stand out but the like of Dortmund are achieving wonders on minimum spend and some incredibly low ticket prices.

I don't know much about prices and fan treatment at Bayern but assuming it's similar to the rest of the Bundesliga then it's pretty assume they gave money to Dortmund to save them from going under, too.

I did hear that the cost of a season ticket for Bayren (might have been the cheapest?) was £62 which was the same as a match day ticket at Arsenal.

Ofcourse we do all moan about prices etc but still go.

Swansea have got a good mix as they've always found the right managers to fit in with their style of play and how they want to run a club.

Trouble is some managers will want to spend millions and fans demand signs of ambition...

I think it was that the most expensive regular matchday ticket at Arsenal was more expensive than the cheapest SEASON ticket at Bayern. Utterly ludicrous.

West Brom.

Never overspent, had a few yo-yo years before finally establishing themselves and improving on it each season.

If Swansea were to ever make the top four they would probably follow suit and build up massive debts in order to maintain their position. Its all good at the minute as they are over achieveing and arent yet signing the biggest names.

thats a good point too! Don't strike me as the sort of club to gamble though imo

I think that the best model for a football club has to firstly be financially realistic. At present money only goes into players & shareholders pockets. This is not good for the game & FIFA need to grow a backbone & stop selling out.

Most professional football clubs in this country are not ran to break even, & fans are paying subscriptions to Sky, ESPN, etc & also paying over the odds at the turnstyles.

Players earn far too much money, some supporters can't afford to attend games or take their children, like my dad took me. Our football system is a shambles, not looking to the future, but profitering just for today. It's a disgrace.

I think here at LCFC, our supporters look at our Thai owners & say "it could be worse" which I agree is true (see Cardiff, Sheff Wed, Birmingham, Chelsea, + many others), but it doesn't meant that our owners are true blues either & totally committed to LCFC. Lets face it the Thai owners want to achieve promotion because of the huge Sky TV financial windfall that promotion brings. Ever other word TOP ever says is "Premier League".

Players have a minimum salary, but there should be a limit to what a player can earn! Fifa should bring in a wage limit, something realistic per week! 250k P/w is not a suitable wage for anyone who is a professional athelete, when average ticket prices are making supporters miss matches because they can not afford to go.

I think that the Financial fair play rules should exclude sponsorship revinues & be proper FFP! Rich owners will just go around the rules like PSG have done. The current FFP loopholes mean that big clubs will continue their monopoly in the Champions League & lower league clubs will have to cut their costs properly because they do not have the rich corperations & owners who will get around the rules with money.

I do not see why an adult should pay over £20 for 90 minutes entertainment, Children & OAP's ahould be £10. £62 to watch Arsenal v Man City is a disgrace & fans should boycott games at these prices en masse.

To answer the topic title, In Germany they have a system that is better than in England for the average fan. They have competative football as we see Bayern beating Arsenal. They have standing which has been deprived to the English because of poor policing at Hillsborough. In Germany it is certainly better, but I am not knowledgeable enough on their situation to say how their football could be further improved.

1. Change European Law first, then you can have your wage cap. A maximim spend on wages is do-able but you'll never get a wage cap of max £50k p/w in football. Certainly not in europe anyway.

2. Football is a sport. It's entertainment. Why should an adult pay over £20 for 90 mins entertainment? Why should someone have to pay £60 to go to a concert? £90 for the theatre? £150 for a Formula 1 race ticket? What makes football so special and different to those events? They may be rarer than football, which is a season long competition, but then you're not being forced to go to every match or event and some do pick and choose.

It's the going rate that people pay. You need mass, mass desertion at certain prices in order for them to be lowered.

I pointed out the issues that are wrong within the game in England. I think that something should be done for the good of the game as a whole, but I do not know how to go about achieving it..

In an business that requires an attendance, someone within the business will be working out the best financial situations (how to rake in the most amount of money) for the business & for example if that means that 20,000 fans at £32 is better than 30,000 at £20 then owners will choose the latter as it means more revinue. I'm not suggesting that it is right or wrong, but I do think it is short sighted as those 10,000 lost lets say may not continue supporting a club because they do not have the emotional attachment that I have now i'm nearly 30. Maybe it's just 1/1000 things that could be improved as things stand with football today.

Swansea. Use the academy well. Don't overspend. Play attractive football. Fans seem decent.

Everton are a good model as well.

Awesome, went to Bayern - Koln last season, cost me about 12 euros to stand. Great atmosphere and Bayern Beer Cards.

First prize goes to Dortmund though, don't think any German club gives the fans as much say as them. In South America you get quite a lot of fan power as well.

Special shout to Lazio as well, any fans that can get a stand that is allowed to 'police itself' deserves some credit.
