Prospero Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 If our football club decides to hold a minute's silence for Thatcher on Friday evening I hope some of you who hate her as much as I do will join me in disrupting the silence.

Babylon Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 If she was so bad... why the sodding hell did you people old enough to vote manage to let her get elected on THREE occasions?
Deucalion Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 If she was so bad... why the sodding hell did you people old enough to vote manage to let her get elected on THREE occasions? Hands up Poll Tax Rebels !! We helped bring her down.
Manwell Pablo Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 If she was so bad... why the sodding hell did you people old enough to vote manage to let her get elected on THREE occasions? Was watching something on this last night, 87 she was popular due to the economic recovery of the country, early 80's was more to do with terrible opposition.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 Hands up Poll Tax Rebels !! We helped bring her down. How dare you raise such issues ? What next ?

God I dread to think what people will do when the opposition leader dies, he must have been a right bastard. Was it Jimmy Savile?
Deucalion Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 God I dread to think what people will do when the opposition leader dies, he must have been a right bastard. Was it Jimmy Savile? Michael Foot - nice old hippy who was never going to be PM. Neil Kinnock - Irritating and ginger but probably would've done a reasonable job. Another thing, forget Thatcher being a woman, have we ever had a ginger PM?

Guest Bilo Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 Michael Foot was a good man and a honest politician with all the charisma of a dishcloth unfortunately. The Labour Party had moved far to the left prior to the 1983 election by committing itself to unilateral nuclear disarmament and leaving what was then the EEC, causing a split within the party. Somebody mentioned the Gang of Four earlier in the thread, and these were centrist Labour MPs who were so concerned by the hard-left approach of Foot they formed an alliance with the Liberals and this split the left-wing vote. Had the Falklands War not happened or been lost and Labour not imploded, Thatcher would have been utterly defeated in 1983 and a lot of the events we now associate with her would never have happened. In 1987, her harsh economic policies were perceived to be bearing fruit by many as the unemployment rate started to fall. This, coupled with a Labour leader few liked in Neil Kinnock and an extremely pro-Tory press, pushed her to victory. It's fair to say that circumstances outside of her control and influence helped give her three election wins.
LJS Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 Whilst it is true that she was elected three times and that she did very well in the popular vote (compared to recent election winners - although this is a turnout thing as much as anything) it is also true that she never won anything like a majority of votes. Clearly you don't have to do that in this country to win a majority of seats, such is the electoral system. But more people voted for parties not led by Thatcher than did for her. Indeed only John Major (in 1992) was more voted against in recent times. Her winning three times doesn't mean that most people wanted her. The voting figures say the opposite was true. Saying that "she won elections so she must have been popular" is a bit of a false argument. Fortunately for her the left did its usual act of splitting. Something the Tories have always been very good at not doing.
MrSpaM Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 Love how everybody has now decided to live 30 years in the past to justify being a tw*t

If indeed times were as bad as people make out they should have been a bit more organised. I'm blameless, I was at school drinking Kiora.
LJS Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 Well the voters only have themselves to blame for not getting their act together properly. If indeed times were as bad as people make out people should have been a bit more organised. The left generally, really. More the parties than the voters. I don't dispute what you say. I just dispute that she was particularly popular. Popular enough, given the political environment of the time, but no more.
lavrentis Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 I do admire Thatcher and I do respect those that worked down the Coal mines but the champagne socialists who wouldn't work 1 minute down a coal mine are the worst.
Deucalion Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 One problem has been that the left wing/ liberal vote is split between the Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party. In the 80s it was split further by the creation of the SDP. The SDP had an electoral alliance with the Liberal Party which led to the permanent marriage we see today, the Liberal Democrats. I honestly believe that the majority in this country support compassion and social justice. Things might be changing to allow this to be reflected in future elections. UKIP is promising to split the right wing in a similar way to the LibDems splitting the left. This assumes UKIP isn't a flash in the pan. I sincerely hope that this is the last time we see a Tory led government due to a permanent split in the right wing vote.

You are so right I'm pretty sure an opinion poll found her to be the most disliked prime minister in th history of polls prior to her saviour arriving which was the Falklads war. She then go herself elected on a wave of patriotism defending a tiny island thousands of miles away in which a lot of brave service personel lost thei lives.
Fox92 Posted 9 April 2013 Posted 9 April 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22079749 Funeral set for 17th April (next wednesday). No minute silence from football clubs.
