Bad backs

I've had a bad back on and off since about 2006.

It seems to flair up every so often, for no obvious reason?

This time round I've had it for 7 weeks and its been so bad I've had to miss City games..

This morning, I woke up in fookin agony and can't walk any more than a few steps. I've been down the LRI and sent home with yet more bloody painkillers.

I've tried chiropracty, the gym, cycling, hot and cold pressure but to no avail this time.

Does anyone else suffer from a bad back and have any advice cos I'm at a loss to be honest.

This weeks game is also out.. I literally can't sit for any more than a minute or two.

Not good..

Slipped disc?

Trapped nerve?

Curvature of the spine?

I genuinely don't know. Like you've thrown your back out, I'm just throwing stuff out there!

Does that explain your moaning in game threads? :P

My father has a dodgy back occasionally and when it flares up he does this thing where he just lies down in the middle of the floor with his legs tucked up. Apparently that helps.

I know this because I once went into the living room and saw him lying there in silence and I genuinely thought his mind had snapped.

Yeah i've been told this helps too. Flat on your back with a cusion or pillow between your calfs and your bum (knees pointing up)

Is it muscle pain? Sciatic pain or what?

Have suffered on and off for years, where is the pain you have? Upper, lower, one side more than the other. Does it radiate anywhere else. ie. down your leg, into your hips, balls etc.

Lumbar area Babs.. Spreads to both sides and then down my legs. Upper back not usually a problem.

I'm gonna have to pay private for an MRI and an injection I think.

I'm 23 and slipped a disc when I was 18. Been a pain ever since but was horrible at the time. This was because it had trapped my sciatic nerve though and I think degrees of pain can vary.

Get to your docs. I had a scan on mine because my pain was so bad. Eventually had cortisone injections in my back which have been a huge relief in the short and long term.

Sounds like sciatica to me mate! I'm no expert but get it occasionally myself! Get the Mrs to rub in some Lloyds cream - Its better than any ibroprofen gel i've tried and generally tends to ease the pain!

you mentioned exercise earlier, i tend to find its strenuous work or exercise that brings my sciatica on so bear that in mind.

I should really have had a scan when I did mine. Never bothered just lay in bed literally unable to move for a week crying like a baby. It's gone a couple of times since and I can feel pain in it quite regularly.

It goes when I'm doing the most mundane things like brushing my teeth, or washing dishes. I think if I was 5 ft 8 rather than 6ft 2 I wouldn't have any of this shit as sinks would actually be the right height for me!!

Get some anti inflammatory down your neck and alternate between hot and cold compressions.

My wife's had a bad back since she was in her early 20s - did it when she was a student nurse at Leicester General - and over the years she's had all sorts of treatments. One thing seems to be clear is that it's really important to identify precisely the cause, because it can be anything from a trapped nerve to a crushed disk to a torn muscle. It might even be something unrelated to your back, such as an issue with posture: you might find, for example, that one of your legs is slightly shorter than the other, which would cause you to put more weight on that side than the other.

The problem (frankly) is that the NHS is not very good at dealing with back pain, as my wife found when we lived in the UK. Painkillers are not really the answer, since they merely mask the issue, which can make it worse. She's had a whole raft of tests since we've been living here, and treatments including state-funded physiotherapy and osteopathy, and although she'll never be completely pain-free (35 years of indifferent treatment put paid to that) it is much easier now that it's ever been. Not much help to you, I know, but I think there is an argument for asking your GP to send you to a specialised clinic to have a full range of tests to find out what the cause is. Once you know that, treatment should be simpler.

Best of luck.

physiotherapy and if that doesn't work acupuncture and if that doesn't work shotgun.

I remember when we was on holiday once and my dad bent down and his back locked up was literally walking round with a half bent spine for hours, it finally eased up and he was able to stand up straight again... was pretty funny at the time.

Of course it could be psychosomatic and your grumpiness in match threads is the cause and not a symptom. :D

That's what I'm hoping to go for mate.

Gonna cost me 400 quid but I hope it's worth it.

Cheers

I could give you the number of a masseuse who'll make you feel much better for less than £400.

Had a fairly bad back since I was like 17. No idea why. I can only drive for an hour or so before I get really bad back pain, and I can't stand up for too long (like at festivals etc.) without being in pain.

Never been to the doctors about it though. Too many other problems to sort first!

my symptoms have been similar to yours when you explained to babs.Without showing you or knowing exactly what's wrong I'm afraid it might not help, but the exercise that helped me were.

Go on all fours .

Arch your back up,like a scolded cat would, while inhaling.

On the exhale do the exact opposite arch the other way squeezing your tummy muscles(as if) and as if your trying to stop a piss mid flow.( this is not exactly how the pros tell it) sort of thrusting

Next.

Hand on hip other arm over head, bent, pointing over to the side with your hand on hip.

Slowly VERY SLOWLY lean to the side with your hand on hip as far as you can, again on the exhale.Swap sides

This one was good, but at the start I was getting the" electric shock" spasm

Hope they work, because there is not much worse.
