When I went to the polling station about 5ish I heard one of the tellers saying that turnout was 8.5% up until then. Doesn't look like a massive turnout.

I went about four and there was me and one woman in.

Could be seeing apathy to a new level tonight.

Worrying.

Very. It would be music to the ears of the political elite in Westminster as well.

I despair at people voting Labour, how many times do they need to mess the country up before people learn?

You don't think the country is getting progressively more messed up?

Totally agree with this. Most people in the UK hold politicians in general in contempt and that leads to apathy at the ballot box, which does a very nice job of negating democracy to a degree.

Lab holds South Shields. UKIP 2nd.

Lib Dems got 352 votes. lol

Lib Dems 7th lol

Do they even serve a purpose any longer?

I have no idea lol I've never seen a vote collapse like that in history. 5,189 down to 352. Incredible.

Mission accomplished on the part of the Tories, who knew exactly what they were doing when they drafted up the coalition agreement. Not that I care, Clegg and Alexander made their bed and now they have to lie in it.

They couldn't really do anything else, poor bastards. Couldn't prop up Brown and had to take the shot at electoral reform.

352 is the funniest thing I've ever seen though, only just beat off the Monster Raving Loony's by a hundred odd. lol

You've never seen their results in Ratby, Bagworth & Thornton, regular finishers behind the BNP, and that was BEFORE they were pariahs!

Isn't it a shame that Clegg chucked away all that popular goodwill and attention from his good performances in the 2010 debates in return for pretty much naff all.

Still, it's like Matt said, they were stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea when the election results came through. They were damned whoever they decided to form a coalition with. If they'd actually stuck to any of their principles during office rather than appearing like Tory gophers (which I, like Mike, think was the Tory plan all along) or even decided to withdraw and force another General Election then they might have been able to salvage something out of the situation with their core voters at least and be able to start over.

Although I dislike the UKIP and wonder if those voting for them really understand their policies, at least their voters turned up, so many apathetic tory/labour/Libs voters who couldnt be arsed.

Looks like UKIP took the Tory vote and handed the seat to Labour then.

In South Shields? No chance of it ever being anything but Labour, it might be the safest seat in the country.

Although the Labour Party should seriously look into why their share of the vote has evapourated from 71% there in 1997 to barely above half now, they've not had a positive swing there since, even in opposition, so in a couple of election cycles, it could potentially be a shock Conservative gain if the trend continues.

Only a 35% turnout on the Isle of Wight.

That's shameful.

Even if there's no candidate in your ward that you particularly want to vote for, in my opinion you should still turn-up and actually write that on your ballot paper.

Maybe there should be a space on the ballot paper for 'None of the Above'.

No worries up North though , 58% of those 20,000 odd voted by post in South Shields, the Labour activists will quite happily pick up your vote from the doorstep, no idea how they still get away with this in 2013.

On a sidenote, Glenfield voted UKIP :trumpet::chant::frantics::englandsmile4wf:

Lincolnshire is strong for UKIP as well.

Good results for UKIP :appl:

Is there still more results to come in as well?

lol Brilliant

You would have thought the lessons from slandering the party would have kicked in by now. Nothing says envy and jealousy like the ramblings of a lunatic on a 'blog' that's read by about 50 people. Keep going Junius!

Looks like UKIP have taken the BNP vote.

I must have missed the election where the BNP were picking up 25% + of the votes nationwide. They are taking them from everywhere, if they are picking up 6,000 in South Shields ssurely even you can see that.

Ah okay, some lone blogger has an agenda against UKIP. Okay then, I will stop voting for them now!

lol

it seems like some people just can't comprehend other people voting anything outside the "main 3" parties. "Oh they don't read the policies", "they are closet racists".

How about they are voted for because people can identify with them the most and agree with the points and can you blame them after what the other parties have been like over the years.
