AoWW Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Dunno if someone who knows London well can help me out with this...?! This Saturday I've got to get the train to London early and then need to get from Liverpool Street Station to Holborn (nearest tube to where I'm going is Chancery Lane). Only problem being that I'm going to be very tight on time to get from one to the other! Can anyone suggest the quickest way (I'm assuming tube, it's only a couple of stops), or would it be quicker to actually get a taxi (no idea how expensive these are or aren't!)? Anyone able to give me a rough idea of how long it'll take to get from one to the other? Thanks

Alf Bentley Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Tube, you will be there in 10 mins. Yep...Central line (the red one) westbound for 3 stops takes you to Chancery Lane; 4 stops to Holborn Link for weekend engineering work (but doesn't seem to be any on that line): http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/track.aspx?offset=weekend
StanSP Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 You'll get ripped off by a cabbie so I fully recommend getting the Tube! What time do you get in to Liverpool Street? Tubes run fairly regularly (every few minutes for Central line!).
FoxesAreBlue Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 I love I how Londoners know the tube system inside out. I know on here they could have looked a the map and researched it but when you go and ask for directions its all "On here for two stops, change onto the jubilee line for 3 stops, then on Piccadilly for another two and Roberts your fathers brother" God knows how they do it. Takes me an age to figure out where I'm going!

When you spend most of your waking day crammed into a tube carriage you tend to get quite intimate with the old girl That said, I cycle to work so don't have the rush hour horror.

Tell you what, having spent several years living there makes travelling about in other cities with vast underground/tram networks seem like a doddle too! New York was a piece of cake to get around compared to how others described it.
The Blur Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 I also recommend getting tube ticket before you travel, I believe you can buy it along with your train tickets from Leicester station machines.
separator Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Central line is best as said above, but if for some reason this isn't working and you don't want to pay for a taxi then you can get the Circle / Metropolitan / Hammersmith &City line to Farringdon, which is about 6 minutes walk from Chancery Lane tube, Its only around the corner from the Holborn Viaduct & Smithfields market area. Also if you don't have an Oyster card or Travelcard then a single from Liverpool St to Chancery Lane is £4.50. Depending on how many people are travelling then a taxi is often cheaper for maybe 3 + people on short journeys. You can walk it as well in about 20-25 minutes if the worst comes to the worst.
Finnegan Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 The tube is ****ing easy, try the Tokyo Metro. That kicked my ass. (Humblebrag? Brag?)
FoxesAreBlue Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 I felt like the dogs bolloks when I got my first Oyster card
Voll Blau Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Never have understood people who find the London transport system difficult. You make all of us living outside the M25 look like yokels.

Anyone able to give me a rough idea of how long it'll take to get from one to the other? Thanks Funnily enough we worked at both Liverpool St and Chancery Lane last year. It's a 10minute tube ride but you'd be quicker walking rather than getting a taxi!

Oh I get how it works, it just takes me time to plan how many stops before a change and I have to look a the maps on the ceiling to know where I am. What gets me is how the Londoners some how instinctively know where they are even though it's just a random dark tube. It's a bit like when I use the bus, I know when to get off - not because I'm told where I am, but because I can see the local area and recognise it as my village etc. Londoners appear able to do this when all you can see out of the window is Black
jonthefox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Theres a programme on the telly tonight about the tube. Seems quite interesting.

separator Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Theres a programme on the telly tonight about the tube. Seems quite interesting. I work as an engineer on the tube. I was working at Tottenham Court Road station a few months ago and a film crew was there filming buskers and the crowds in the ticket hall.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 It was quite an interesting program to be honest. I'd always wondered about the history of the tube.
