Impulse buying an AK 47.

As the title says, I have just impulse bought a deactivated AK 47.

I was at a military vehicles show near Evesham and there were loads of stalls selling deactivated guns.  By the end of the day I almost thought it was natural to go into one and pay £225 for an AK 47.

It was an AK I wanted and there were some pristine new Russian ones, but I didn't want to pay £400.  This left me with a choice of two with folding stocks, which I didn't want, and a Romanian, North Korean and Chinese example.  The Romanian one had a foregrip, which I liked, the North Korean one was very tidy, and the Chinese one had an evil foldaway bayonet.  The bayonet won, I bought the Chinese one.

When I got it home and had a good look, I realised I had made a boo boo.  In my buyers frenzy, I had overlooked that all the pieces of wood were from different rifles and were different colours, and the stock, which I expressly wanted to be wooden, was made out of plastic!

I've given this much thought now, and I think the best thing to do is source a wooden stock and then sand and varnish the wooden parts to match it.  It won't be original anymore but it should increase it's value and it's looks.

Anyone with any experience at all with restoring firearms?  Anyone want to tell me what a silly billy I am for buying the thing in the first place?

One side benefit was, when I got home, I greeted my step-son with the line;

"Hold my AK while I take my shoes off."

Almost worth the money for that !!   lol

The "Chinese" manufactured AK should have been enough on an idea to choose either the Russian or the Korean one.

I would have gone with the Russian one myself.

My younger brother has a plastic gun with 'Made In China' on it if you would like to add another to your collection for £225?  ;)

In answer to both, I've just endured a prolonged (and maybe not entirely unjustified) sulk from the other half over my new purchase, so no, £400 for a Russian AK and £225 for your little brother's pride and joy is not going to happen.

For the record, I've found the plastic stock, it is from an early East German AK.  I might be able to sell it on.

The Chinese AK.  (note the vicious bayonet)

Yucky plastic bits, surprisingly from one of the most sought after AKs.

As East 17 said, you'll never get to heaven with an AK47.

Judging by the atmosphere in this house...

I may have never appreciated the truth and honesty in their lyrics until this moment.

lol

Today, for £7k, you could buy a massive, and by massive I mean mahoosive Cold War Russian truck.

I was a bit like this and I reckon you could comfortably live in the thing.

I also reckon, any more military impulse purchases and I might have to !!   :o

Odds on Deucalion featuring on the front page of national newspapers?

Just to reassure people, the AK is purely for ornamental and conversational purposes !!

Seriously though, I've just took the plastic stock off, and I reckon I could make a reasonable wooden stock out of a piece of pine.

It will look good when it's done.

Where's the appeal in owning something which has been used to kill people? Seems a bit perverse. If there's a market for that kind of thing, maybe I can start selling the bloody, shit-stained condoms I've used to rape prostitutes who I suspected of having aids.

How much are you asking?

The AK 47 is a bag of shite...  You should have gone for an Enfield 303 or Karabiner 98k   :geek:

As the arms dealer market trader said, the AK 47 is the iconic weapon of the 20th Century.  I've fired a Lee Enfield 303 btw, and an SA80 and SLR, all of which were for sale.

I've just received an email about the wooden stock from a man called Sakhaz.  I've got an MI5 file for sure now !!   lol

Mousebreath, if I'd had said I definitely would never buy an AK 47 because they killed people blah de blah, you would've called me a namby, pamby PC something or other.  Let's face it, mostly you post to get a reaction.

Well, here's your reaction...

meh.
