foxfanazer Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 So with there seemingly being little transfer activity this summer I was thinking of ways this could favour us. In previous seasons we have had massive overhauls of playing staff. It's always seemed like we have to wait 10 games into the season for them to gel. This current squad are all very familiar with each other and know each others game. Could this benefit us and maybe get us off to a good start? Or is the personell just not there?
Zingari Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 I was thinking pretty much the same . a settled team/squad is not such a bad thing . we all want exciting new players, but it's not always the answer . I think we'll be stronger that last term , but i think we'll need to be .
AyewJoking Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Yeah keep the nucleus of the squad and compliment it with quality additions over time. The best thing to come out of our FFP restrictions will mean expectations and therefore pressure on the players is decreased.
cc_star Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 We don't really have any choice though. We made nothing out of Beckford's departure, we'll make nothing off SSL, Konchesky & Danns if they go it may even cost us in loyalty bonuses etc anyway & it will cost us to offload Wellens & Gallagher too as we'd surely have to pay some of their contracts off along with bonuses etc. This is why I don't understand people moaning about the arrival of a free from a lower division as morons fail to grasp just how much we have to reduce the wage bill or face sanctions... If we can get rid of everyone we need to on Sven-era contracts then we MIGHT be far enough under FFP ceiling to bring in 1 or maybe 2 frees... Although IMO we don't need more than that. I wouldn't mind the galvanising effect on squad mentality we had in 02/03 when we had no choice then either
Alf Bentley Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 "Time to gel"? I saw the topic title and came here hoping for some hairdressing & personal grooming tips. I leave disappointed.... No, seriously, I like the sound of this prospective new left-back - potentially pace down both wings with RDL on the right, though we'll have to see what he's like defensively, if the signing is confirmed. A couple more departures (e.g. Futacs, Danns, SSL), a couple of arrivals (say, a promising young loanee centre-back and a strong, experienced, out-of-contract central midfielder) and we wouldn't be too badly placed. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have the likes of Gallagher, Wellens or SSL still here as squad players...provided, of course, that they're properly motivated (if not, then loan them out). Of course, it'll be easier said than done to get hold of a centre back and a midfielder, and the season will then depend on how well the existing players step up (young players with potential for improvement, mature under-achievers like Whitbread/Vardy).

marbelladave Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 I have often mentioned, even through the recent profligate years, that I am a bit old fashioned and like to see the club develop a squad by improvements year on year and developing the players you have. I do not much like the 'buy a new team every season' approach and never have. So while I should be pleased, I'm really not, simply because I have seen no evidence that Pearson and his coaches are capable of developing our players and making them better, both individually and as team players. In fact I would go as far as to say the opposite is pretty much the case, promising young players like Waghorn, Drinkwater and Marshall seem to be going backwards and several others look in danger of going the same way. It took a spell at United to bring Schlupp forward and I do not see Moore improving either, I worry that NFP's style is stifling our more creative players and turning us into side of inept scufflers.
Leicester_Numan Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Yeah keep the nucleus of the squad and compliment it with quality additions over time. The best thing to come out of our FFP restrictions will mean expectations and therefore pressure on the players is decreased. Unfortunately, it won't. Half our home crowd will still expect us to get automatic promotion, do it with fast, free flowing, accurate, attacking football and will moan and boo when they don't get it. They'll call all the players useless and call for the managers head without ever understanding they're increasing the pressure on everyone and shooting themselves in the foot in the process. If the crowd just back off and support the team like the last few matches of last season, then automatic promotion is a possibility, if they don't we're in for another scrap to scrape into the play offs
Fox92 Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Not sure. Whilst I agree, look at teams like Everton who only sign 1/2 players but in recent seasons have started off very slow.
DanTheFox07 Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Certainly need to make sure that we are better as a squad, to many players last season who should have made a contribution and didn't letting the season past them by. Waghorn for me is the most interesting as I remember when we had him on loan at first, genuinely think he can still make an impact for us. He has suffered with injuries etc which haven't helped. Making sure that every player know's his role for the team and been integrated into whatever system Pearson employ's is a must especially since we have kept a lot of the players from last season.
sylofox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 For the first time since MoN we have a period of stability in management and playing staff. Same manager and no huge numbers coming in and a squad the manager has tailored in his own fashion. Yes he may want a couple more in but the bulk is stable. I actually feel better about this season than last. Better than the shite or bust approach of previous seasons. Did anyone ever see ferrgie sign a whole new team in a window.

I agree on the stability thing. MON's team was much much much better than this though IMO.
Monsell1976 Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Stability is good, now lets kick on and hope they can repay the faith by performing consistently, and getting consistent results, then you never know we might start getting somewhere.
seenitall Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Stability is good, now lets kick on and hope they can repay the faith by performing consistently, and getting consistent results, then you never know we might start getting somewhere. They were consistent between Feb and May - I think you mean consistently good results and that is gonna be tough with this lot
Monsell1976 Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 They were consistent between Feb and May - I think you mean consistently good results and that is gonna be tough with this lotI think we had good results in patches but as a season went,we we're very inconsistent in performances and results, I think we all know if we were more consistent in the last 17 games, we might not be playing in the championship next season. We have the same side that can play so well, and so shite, if they can find out what went wrong in the last 17 games, and not let it happen again, we could be in for a decent season, lets hope another season together they do gel
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 If we don't gel from the word go, then I think we will be looking up a longish ladder. Forest, look like they will be good !
slymunn Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 We where top after 11 games last season so gel was not an issue last season. Think the problem was half our team have not played a full season before and burnt out with a small squad. They know what to expect this season so should be more prepared

cjslcfc Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 We still have a small squad though so that burnt out issue won't be resolved. Not sure that's what he meant. I think the fact people like James, Drinkwater, Keane, De Laet, Wood, Knocky, Marshall etc etc.. wouldn't have had a whole season in a first team playing regular football at this level and intensity did certainly play a big part in our burn out
Matt Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Should we have a poor start to the season, which obviously I hope we do not, atleast it's 1 less excuse we have for ourselves and maybe people will be a little more honest.

Might of being part of why they faded off at the 30 games as most haven't done a full season at the same team. Hopefully a year wiser and abit more about them in the way of winning games in the final straight!
beemeroo Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 They need more PEDs. Should take a leaf out of cycling's book.
